Hey guys wanted to say thank you for clicking on my channel. I hope my content is sufficient and pleasing for you viewers. What I want to do with this channel is buy and flip outboards and show you guys how to do a lot of the work that is necessary to work on these marine engines. Also just general boating and "how to videos" and a lot of work to different varieties of not only outboards, but inboards and possibly even some jet skis. Would love to hear feedback from you guys and what you guys wanna see when I shoot these videos. As always thank you guys for watching the video
I thought this was the best I have seen on YT but would suggest a few things. Firstly, when replacing impeller put key in with a dab of grease to hold it. Then when pushing housing down turn shaft clockwise. Also before installing lower unit put some grease on drive shaft splines but not on tip of shaft. André in Sydney
@@SoundzAlive1 yea I did do all that I just didn’t really show me doing it in the vid just cus of my camera kept dying and wanted to get the vid done. If you watch some of my other vids you’ll see me say it and do those things to make things easier for people. I appreciate the feedback and comment and I’ll make sure to mention that to the people who aren’t aware of that kinda stuff in future vids cus it does make the jobs so much easier and proper when you know that kinda details. Have a great night I appreciate it!!!
Yea I’ve had that feedback before. I was still new to all the editing and stuff and how it works through RU-vid. If you watch some of my newer videos it’s a bit better. I appreciate the feedback I hope I corrected it enough and you check out some of my other vids!!
You can't get a true compression reading as there's a decompressor , easy start, built in these motors. The fuel pump also needs to be well primed to work efficiently on starting. Not bad motors though.
@@llsahdowll8800 really nothing tbh. It’s just an overfill for the carb to dump out in the lower cowling of the motor if for some reason the carb started to flood
@@outboardfinatic Thank You So Much!. Just bought my first outboard motor (Mercury 6hp) Im doing an oil change and it smells like gas (is that normal) whats causing it and how can i fix it :(!
@@llsahdowll8800 not normal. More than likely what happened was engine was laying on side with carb full of gas and it leaked in the cylinders and into the oil. Do an oil change and run it and then check the oil and see if you have any gas. I’ve had this happened but when I buy a motor a lot of times they have them laying on the wrong side for a long time
These are hands down some of the toughest motors ever. I have three of them my kids race on hydroplanes. We slap a OMC A direct drive lower unit on them , jet them down and run them at 7200-7400 rpm for 10 minutes a race. One of the motors has 10+ hours running that way. Good video !
@@destroyer85golf84 thanks so much for the feedback and comment. That’s awesome never honestly knew you could do that with these motors but that’s really cool with the racing and all
got my hands on a 25 e 1999 for free, looks like the same engine more or less. going to have to watch this vid while i work on it. thank you for posting this!
just bought my 1st Merc..hence my comment on your excellent utube channel, 25 hp short shaft 2T vintage 1988 runs awesome and was well taken care of, pees quite well...Looking forward to 1st voyage with my AVON Rib rated for 25 hp...I suspect my little boat will Fly on the colorado river.
That’s awesome thank you so much for commenting and absolutely you should move quite well with that setup. May just have to adjust pitch size on your prop for whatever works best for your boat but time will tell lol
I did I just didn’t show me doing it in the video. In the beginning I didn’t because didn’t know if this motor was gonna be junk or not so wanted to just do compression and spark before I even think about cleaning a motor
Nice video, im having a hard time to find the wright position for the timing linkage that goes over the carburator, could someone tell me how it goes ? Thanks
So it can only go one way. One side has and L shape to it that goes in a square cut out slot under the flywheel. It’s where the trigger sits. You’ll see it if you look from the front of the carb under the flywheel. L shape goes up and the zig zag end clips into the choke linkage on the carb. Easiest way I can explain it. It’s actually really easy once ya figure it out
At 14:37 I show where it goes then and the position of it. Easiest way is to insert from the back of the powerhead and through the cut out slot and then clip it in the way I do. Hope this helps
I just bought same model and I noticed when forward gear is engaged it’s locked in but only in the proper direction. I can turn it counterclockwise and it feels the gear is riding on the clutch is this normal ? It doesn’t do it in reverse it’s locked both ways ..?
100 percent normal. You do not want to keep spinning it tho counterclockwise while it’s in forward. Could mess something up in the gearcase. Reverse locks in and won’t ratchet. But you can always double check your in forward by seeing if it ratchets one way but DO NOT continusly spin it ratcheting
4 stroke is 209cc and the 9.8 2stroke is only 169cc. I have the 2T in a infatable suzumar 350vib and the top speed is 19knots with one person 15 knots with 2 persons and 11 with 3 persons . After that it cant go to plane so with 5 persons which is the legal limit for this in Greece you can travel with 7 knots and the throttle is only 1/4.... In your boat i think 9.8 2 stroke cant reach its maximum rpm 5-6000rpm and for this reason you say it is slow. Maybe your boat is too heavy or you need another propeler. Nice video !!!
@@firestorm766 yea it was def my boat and prop and what not as well. My boat is a test boat for testing the motors so it is light for the boat. Plus from what I remember the prop was a bit mangled
good work, Im thinking about picking up a 08' Mercury 9.9 4 stroke and attempting to fix with no experience...wanting to see if its a bad idea. "its smoking and oil is getting into lower cylinder, new carburetor it starts and runs for 10 minutes then stops and wont start" think it could be saved? Thanks!
Could be a couple things. Fuel pump took a dump they are mounted on the back of the motor and run off oil pressure, motor was laying on the wrong side and oil got into the cylinders, or valve cover gasket or even hanging a valve open are just some ideas. The part you just don’t know is if something is corroded internally and there’s corrosion holes or something. I made a pretty good video on me doing a 9.9 mercury pro kicker 4 stroke. Same exact motors and had a similar issue but mine was from the motor laying on the wrong side. Check that vid out and lmk if that helps
@@antraxcar1 no but if you want it done properly and do it by urself you need at least an air compressor. Which I would think just about everyone has if your tryna to do something like this irself. Otherwise you could just pour the antifreeze in by hand and push it with the air compressor. So really the only thing you need is an air compressor. And it is extremely important to use one and blow out all the water
I have a 1985 two-stroke 18 hp outboard that looks very very similar to that one. I’m having problems with the car flooding. It’s getting way too much gas and I can only get the engine to start. If I have it at full throttle I cannot get it to start in neutral do you have any suggestions of what I should do I have tried messing with the air fuel mixture screw, and it doesn’t really do anything because it’s really hard to do because I can’t get the motor to title at all
Or it could be the enricher on the side of the carb. If that ball isn’t seating or your gaskets split or what not then excess gas will leak by and flood you
Not sure on the psi tbh. We have a big shop one that’s up in the air but believe I got the hose attachment from the snap on truck but I’m sure you can get other after market ones for it
Question- how do you remove the lower cowl? Is this possible without pulling the power head or the bracket? Whats the correct way to do this? Mine is broken from falling over.
@@masonbabb5255 should be able to without pulling the powerhead. Believe in these but don’t hold me to it cus I don’t have a motor rn to go look at. But believe it’s 2-4 bolts on each side located like underneath the coupling. If you were to look just up at the motor from the gearcase should see them there
Yea i see the bolts (4) but its all one peice doesnt look like it will go on from the top or bottom without a full disassemble at first glance. Wasnt sure if anyone had any experience with the repair or taken one apart.
@@sammyrothrock6981I know for sure it’s a bigger idle speed jet. Says on them the size of them. Believe 25 run a .076 and I know 15hps run a .066 jet but honestly not 100 percent sure if there was really anything else significantly different between the 2 motors
@@outboardfinatic I have a 9.9 mercury and had a 15 same vintage they used the same base block only carb is different same bore and stroke. I believe the 20hp and 25hp are the same block also not sure about 30hp?
That plastic tube above the shaft bearing, don’t throw that, it’s the most expen$ive part to replace-dude.it’s about 5 inches long an has just as many bends
I have the same Tohatsu 9.8A four stroke. Just got it out of a garage that it had been sitting in for years. Threw in a new impeller, oils, 9 pitch prop, plugs, and an entirely new fuel system (including carb and pump) for about $400 in total. Put it onto the 1436 flat bottom Jon... and it took me (215 lbs), my son and daughter (90 lbs each), my 55lb thrust trolling motor, and 100Ah Lithium battery... plus some gear... up to a little over 18mph. Should do mid-20s with just me in there. I bet that if the new 9.8C (fuel injected version) that just came out... really does have more torque... it would be an amazing motor. Especially with 30% better fuel economy. My 9.8A has a max burn rate of 1gal per hour according to the manual. Which means I am getting at worst 18mpg. Most likely more.
Hello, I have a problem selecting neutral. In neutral, my propeller must be free? If I adjust it so that my selector neutral is set with a free propeller, I can no longer shift into reverse. Thanks for your advice.
In neutral it should spin freely. If you took the lower unit off you have to make sure your engine is set to reverse and your lower unit is set to reverse. It will be out of an adjustment every time if you don’t do it this way. Also if you were reinstalling it correctly and accidentally shifted the lower unit when reinstalling it’ll be out of adjustment as well
Hi. We have a part that may fit your machine. We're happy to offer you the product completely free of charge in exchange for a video review. Are you interested?

@@Up2winPartStoreokay sweet. Honestly whatever you’d guys would like to send I’ll check it out and see if I can make a vid on whatever it is you sent. I pretty much do anything in the marine world at the shop I work out so whatever works for me!!
I had to go to a different video because of the loud music. I needed the information, but can't take the audio hammering. I saw your reply to a similar comment that you are on a learning curve. May I suggest no music and your own personal narration of what it is you are doing, step by step. Thanks for listening to constructive criticism.
THANK YOU! No elaborate introduction, music, graphics etc.... No history of engines etc...STRAIGHT to the point, simple instructions. I salute you sir! Thanks! 🫡
Appreciate the feedback. Yea it’s actually very easy they are just kinda hidden. Should be 2 towards the back I think 2 on the side and then one in the front
@@outboardfinatic Thanks for your response.I know how to remove the top Cowl but the lower starboard & Port cowl are a mystery to me . I`m attempting to replace my poppet valve on the starboard side of the motor. Could you tell me about what size bolts to look for?
Thanks for sharing. I have a 1999 Yamaha 25 with 3 cylinders, found this looking for possible cause of why mine suddenly lost power while cruising at full speed. From 26 mph to 8, all at once. I think it's my gas line, have ordered a Yamaha part, seeing lots of issues around Attwood ones de-laminating inside and blocking the passage. I also may rebuild the fuel pump, which you showed well. Should be rebuilt every 25 years or so, right? I do have one warning to other Yamaha 25 hp owners - some (including mine) have 5 bolts holding the lower unit. I found another video that showed the 4, followed it and was dumbfounded when the unit wouldn't drop. It turns out that some models have a 5th bolt under the "trim tab", or anode above the prop. Very sneaky of Yamaha to hide that one!
While it will work fine both ways , Its not a bad idera to put the vent or purge hole on the primer cover facing out, that way if your primer diaphragm with age springs a leak it will easly visable as it will spray out of that hole where you can see it. everybody seems to have diffrent opinions as to what is the proper correct orentation of the new style plastc float when gets re-instaled. Am I being given bad infomation and yes it was ovious he had the float arm on upside down , I have asked 12 people and they all tell me diffrent things , for example , ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FmRS9AhC5KI.html is his float infomation correct ?
Hi I have just this outboard in a 1997 and she is running sound but only getting 80 psi on each piston ? Does that mean it nearly close to been broken ? Thanks Glen
Pretty much if the max ur getting is 80 on both or just 1 she’s pretty toast. Helps if you have a camera to check out the cylinder walls to further diagnose. The motor still will run but may experience weird hiccups here and there
Very well done! I just changed my spark plugs and fuel/water separator and it runs like a brand new engine! It's a 1999 Mercury 200 Hp EFI. Now I need to change the lower unit oil and the impeller - thanks for the excellent video that shows all the steps!
Hey, I’ve got that same engine, it’s a 2020. I’m have a terrible problem with the spark plugs fouling, I’m currently on my 3rd set maybe 4th set of spark plugs. Is this normal for the Mercury 115hp engine? Do you have any suggestions???
Haven’t ran in that issue myself with any of the servicing I do for customers here. What kind of gas u running and u adding stabilizer? Or over stabilizing your fuel or something. Or maybe running the run spark plugs at the wrong gaps? Just some things to think about
I just acquired the same without e start. it has crazy spark from lower cylinder but top is dead ! Had a spare coil so swapped it out but will need to dig further didn't solve issue.
well I tested to see if it was trigger or cdi I switched wires to coil & confirmed, I'm waiting for a new cdi ! taking a chance with amazon supplier will see how reliable?!
