I am currently renovating a old metal garden water bowl from around 1879, from the German imperial era, so called Kaiserzeit, for my wild Thai Lotus. If I close my eyes, I see 7-8 of this unique ranchus dancing around the magical, flowery wild Thai Lotus...
In the winter I keep the water temp in the low 50's. No filtration, just an airstone. I move them to a fresh pond every 5-7 days when the water quality declines
Jeff what temperature can the water get down to in winter without killing the fish I live in Ireland and it gets down to 2 c below for a week or two in winter
The ranchu can survive very cold temps, even with some ice forming on the surface, but it saps their fat and energy reserve very fast and I don't recommend letting it get that cold. I aim to keep water temps between 5 and 10 deg C through the winter months. The ranchu hibernate during this time and I don't feed them until temps water up in the spring.
