Dark Duel Stories in America. This was my first yuguih game. This game is what taught me I did everything wrong. Once you get Jirai Gumo... This game is cheap.
Yugioh video games used to be wild and very few of them played like the official tcg, the best one was one on the ps2 that played like chess that took place during the war of the roses
This is barebones yugioh. I think it should go back to this maybe just add traps. And perfect! Very simple and very fun. That's the trick to making a game good and I think where Konami lost it's way. They focus on the money and not just making yugioh, fun. Almost 90% of the effect monster's in yugioh today could literally just be a vanilla monster and its effect turned into a spell or trap card
I love these old YuGiOh games! You should try Forbidden Memories and Duelist of The Roses sometime, both of ehich build on the mechanics of these pre-TCG games.

I really wish we got these game boy games before the US Dark Duel Stories, too. It would be cool if you did videos for all the Yugioh video games like this one. The early ones went all over with different concepts like Capsule Monster Coliseum, Duelists of the Roses, Falsebound Kingdom.
The manga was done with the first arc of DM by the time this game came out so they probably used that as the basis and it's possible there's no spell/trap to try and meet deadlines.
The fan translation of season zero takes me out of the immersion due to using names only the Japanese living in Japan would know. It's jarring. Nor should it be done.
@@thejrose12 YES! You said it! I am an English speaking man, like 70%+ the rest of the world. The Japanese names don't elicit any kind of response from me, especially because I grew up with the proper localizations. It is like: if I were to move to Japan my name would be morphed (even if slightly), to reflect respect of their culture. Respect mine.
Idk if you're aware, but while the anime for "season 0" is a separate continuity made by a different studio, the manga is one continuous narrative. Duelist Kingdom does follow immediately after the final shadow game of the first arc in the original manga. It's only the anime where season 0 is unrelated, retconned, and only very selective parts retold. I only bring this up because it blew my mind when I first learned it. I always thought DM was just a total reboot of the series.
I believe they could attack directly in the early stages of the game in the anime but you were only allowed to attack with one monster per turn so it never really happened.
Great video! Just reminded me of one of my favorite games growing up - Yu-Gi-Oh the duelist of roses! Hope you can get to a video of that game someday!
i am happy for people discovering these old games. these are the stuff that made fans like me appasionate to yugioh. konamy now has literally gone compleaty away from what made us love the game.
Surprised you did discuss how fusions in this game, which is the same fusion mechanic used in all the Duel Monsters seiya games (ie DM2 Dark Duel stories and Dark Duel Stories) and Forbidden Memories/Duelist of the Roses.
