Welcome to my RU-vid Channel It was initially focused on Magic The Gathering but I also post a large number of non-MTG related videos as the mood takes me and that amount is increasing over time. In all of my content I try to find Eudaimonia or Flourishing in everyday experiences. I also have 2 podcasts both non-MTG related (Music & Relaxation) that viewers may also find of interest. You can find links to those podcasts in the sections below.
@@jlebaron3 interesting you should ask as I’m trying to make it a regular thing again. So, there is a programming book one scheduled for Oct 21st, a CD box sets related one for Nov 4th and another guitar related book one for the 22nd Nov.
38:24 Tarnished Citadel is just a great card in 4-5 color decks in Commander because it comes in untapped and adds any color. Especially good in any deck that isn't trying to grind out wins since the 3 life isn't a big deal when you start with 40.
So I think the hangy floaty thing beneath the temple bell is a suspended fire pit while the green vent behind the nim deathmantle is a necrogen cent from the dross region of *Mirrodin
While I only have the most surface level understanding of programming languages and really no interest in learning them, I still find these videos on program languages quite fascinating. I feel that it’s important to understand just how vital these languages and their various applications are to our modern society. I dabbled in Qbasic when I was younger and built some very basic, no pun intended, programs. I never did much beyond that besides simple html and css for web design. But I never realized just how many programming languages actually exist and how they interact with each other even decades on from their inception. So while a lot of the concepts are over my head, I still like listening to your videos on these subjects because at least I can have an appreciation for every thing that goes into the behind the scenes guts of applications we modern humans use every day.
@@ameliadesertsong Thanks. I’m so fascinated in the history of programming languages and how so much of it has played out in my lifetime. There’s an upcoming My Life In Objects about a book I recently purchased called Programming Language Explorations.
You should have a series of my life in objects that covers some of the most important vinyl albums you own :) by the way I have the first Black Sabbath album on vinyl, pretty sure the original UK pressing :D
@@ameliadesertsong Yes, that’s definitely an idea I should give some thought. Excellent, I love those first six Black Sabbath albums. Although, without checking through my collection, I think I have every Sabbath album on CD excluding 13. 😀
This was a fun journey! Thanks for putting it all together. Pretty wild how many new rocks started getting printed the past few years, in addition to all the reprints! Coveted Jewel is really fun card. I think my favorite rock is Timeless Lotus for the untapping potential. A final look at edhrec rankings would have been neat as a cherry on top. This will be a good video to re-watch from time to time.
@@danielzitnik4247 Thanks. This year-to-year slice is definitely something I will be revisiting, with a few tweaks, for certain tags that capture a larger number of cards.
@@tobikk3829 Thanks that’s it, Nahiri, the moment I saw it I had images in my head of a couple cards featuring that character but just could not remember the names. Now I know that Nahiri, the Lithomancer was the commander precon one (c14). The other was Stoneforge Mystic from Worldwake. I found an interesting article about when Stoneforge and Jace were banned in Standard in 2011. blog.cardkingdom.com/this-day-in-magic-history-jace-the-mind-sculptor-and-stoneforge-mystic-are-banned-june-20th-2011/
@@theflourishing Yeah, good old times. I managed to purchase a stoneforge mystic several years later (once they became cheaper). She was a good addition to my edh deck. Never played jace though
I think you nailed it with the Evolving Wilds description with the snow-capped peak. Also on the one with the giant lily pads, I was thinking the exact same thing! It's interesting to see so many different artworks for one card. It'd be funny as an April Fool's Day joke to do 15 versions of the same card but with a deadpan expression, never revealing nor acknowledging they're all the same card lol. "Here's Evolving Wilds. And next is a different artwork. I actually have a 3rd copy of Evolving Wilds this week. Oh yea, a 4th copy as well with alternate artwork." etc.
@@danielzitnik4247 Thanks. Amusing thought, and it does make me wonder what version of a card I have the most copies of (excluding basic lands). Now you got me thinking as I could do 15 versions of a same token, and then when I get to the zoomed in part, if they were full art tokens I would not have to zoom in but just do them all again. 🧐
The Dojo was an old mtg tournament deck site, that discussed strategies and current meta games, the lesser know Brainburst was another site like that at the time (late 90's early 2000's).
@@Captain_Valentine Yes, that’s true. The effect on the card is not considered a draw effect so you would not loose to drawing on an empty library at that point.
@@theflourishingprobably John Denver, actually. My dad was a huge fan of him. A lot of this stuff that came out in 91 I didn’t hear til much later. I grew up mostly around country and some 80s stuff like Billy Joel. But it wasn’t until the late 90s that my musical palette opened up, most certainly for the better!
My favorite album that year is by far The Resistance by Muse. They’ve become my favorite band of all time :) some other highlights for me are Sainthood by Tegan and Sara, paramore’s brand new eyes, and a handful of singles. I really need to do a deep dive because I don’t remember most of these releases.
I’m stoked for this series! I love old magic! This Olde Deck is such an amazing name for a series. Kind of shocked no one else has thought of it. New magic just isn’t fun :/ this was the Wild West and it was glorious!
@@ameliadesertsong Excellent, glad you enjoyed it. I think what attracts me to some of these decks is that are just so different from the mainly creature based decks that I initially saw around Tenth Edition, and they use strategies and synergies that you just don’t see much now except if you play some of the original eternal formats. I will try and focus on what is I think referred to as the ‘Golden Age’ of magic, which I believe covers everything up to and including Urza’s block.
I love the context of where you were in life when you discuss these song and album releases. That’s really what sets your musings on these things apart.
@@ameliadesertsong Thank you. I find it really helps me to think about the impact that music has on my life in terms of it pushing me in certain directions, the significance of the lived experience at that time, and proving general catharsis.
I think WIldfield Borderpost would look especially cool in foil! I never heard of the Cameo cycle before. But as you said, many of these cards are not popular for power level reasons. Thanks for the look at these artworks!
@@danielzitnik4247 At some point I might do a deep dive into mana rocks. mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Mana_stone There has certainly been interesting variations over the years at various power levels, so it could take several videos 😀. Cheers.
Jeez. I remember Uber Jace. Scry every turn for free and his ultimate ability was effectively "I win." There was little more demoralizing than hearing "You have at most 7 turns to kill me with what you already had in your hand."
@@freddieforever4516 I also have an app on my iPad called the Guitar Toolkit which can do similar things although not as cool as this musical slide-rule 😀
@@tobikk3829 Thank you 😊 I’ve started recording some more artwork videos but featuring just 15 cards from my collection in each. The first one should appear next week.
@@veralnox457 Thank you. I find this sort of stuff really interesting to delve into particularly as my first introduction to actually playing magic was using software and so the intricacies of card interactions were taken care of.
@@danielzitnik4247 I find horrors an interesting place to look for abilities and mechanics to explore. I remember when I first saw cards like Nemesis of Reason and Thought Gorger and trying to think of cool uses.
Your voice sounds different today! I didn't know Horrors were a prevalent creature type in this set. Not the most appealing artwork to look at I must say lol
Its great that the pack art ended up being exactly what you pulled. Have you ever played magic arena? You could maybe try a draft video or build a brawl deck. Brawl is basically commander, except you are limited to the arena card pool.
I took a film studies course in high school. It was pretty basic but gave me a bit more appreciation for what goes into film. Some time not long ago I bought the DK big book on movies and that was particularly enlightening :)
@@ameliadesertsong I love those DK Big Books. I’ve built personal learning projects around them. We have that film one you mentioned and the literature one, among several others. 😀
You were thinking of Braids, Cabal Minion. A cube stable for years! I love all the visits to cube cobra. This is a fun set of mythics. I've always thought Platinum Emperion was super cool, although I've never used it lol. My favorite card of the bunch is Venser. He's a lot of fun in Niv-Mizzet Reborn decks. Thanks for the great video!
Love the pack opening videos. Have you ever gotten into the Magic alternative sets Bloomburrow, Assassins Creed, and Lord of the Rings? Interested to hear your thoughts on those. To me, they seem to be more of an attempt at making collectible sets rather than playable ones. I honestly like the Bloomburrow cards because the artwork is pretty great.
@@hogs29 As part of the set musings episodes on the channel, I’m working towards covering some of those types of sets in the future. I don’t know if I will go back to doing pack openings like I did when I started the channel. But, I may throw in the odd one somehow, and I wouldn’t mind resurrecting that series where I took six ‘virtual’ packs and built a deck in archidekt using just the contents of the six packs rather like one might do at a pre-release. Thanks 😀
Another pretty basic land! I also really like how Frantic Firebolt looks. Rowan seems like a fun build around card. Not sure if you're planning any deck building episodes. Or you could poke around EDHREC and see what the Legendary Creatures you pull are running in Commander.
It's refreshing to see a pack opening, and mixed with a focus on artwork! My favorite art from the pack - the Swamp. I bet it looks great in foil. It has a mesmerizing glow. My favorite card - Gruff Triplets . It's a really cool card in cube. Versatile ramp or reanimation target, plus it's green so it's good with Natural Order.
