Congratulations you both put so much effort into your garden, we have enjoyed your videos over the past years. We hope you get to do many new exciting activities. Annie n Brian
Hello, there, found your channel two years ago and I turned into dahliaholic because of you. Great advices and tons of usefull information. We have climate similar to yours in Bulgaria, though the summer is hot as hell, not much rain and I have to water twice a week. Unfortunatelly I lost 15-20 % of the risomes afterf the winter but keep buying new varieties if I can find. So keep posting new vids please and make us happy! No dahlia garden better than yours, hats down! Be healthy and safe!
I grow salvias, bedding begonias, marigolds, rudbeckia “Goldsturm”, Aster “Monch”, heliotropes, and also dwarf dahlias such as “XXL Veracruz”, “Art Deco”, “Art Nouveau”, and “Spanish Conquest”
@@Dahliaholic thank you for your reply I used liquid soap with neem oil for aphids and black fly but not seemed to be working anymore. So i used was using bug clear its OK.
I don’t fertilise the plants at all after I have planted them into the ground. Each plant is given a spade full of compost from my compost heap at planting time.
Very few deadheads from fully double flowers have seeds. To get them you need to be sure the bees have pollinated the flower from another variety, then leave the deadhead to mature. Even then most fail to have seeds. And by leaving the deadhead on the plant you get less new flowers.
You two are absolutely making my first dahlia garden fun and so far a success. If not, I'll just have to "learn to live with it" and do my best next time.
Thank you for doing this video. Everything is so easy to see and follow. My dahlias are big because I was afraid to divide them, now they’re too big for pots until I can plant them out after my last frost date, end of May. Your dahlias are beautiful!
What should I do with the dahlia bulbs I ordered that already showed sprouting upon arriving to my home? Do I plant them and place them in the sun? Or put them in a pot to continue storage? Any help you can give would be great!
I can only tell you what I do….. I pot them up and keep them in the greenhouse until they have 3 or 4 pairs of leaves. By then the danger of frost has passed and they are more able to survive a slug attack.
You have convinced me! Your dahlia garden is impressive and inspirational. I live in a region of Canada where our last frost date is in early June! I have started to sprout about 16 store bought tubers, some named, some not, to give them a head start, and i also started 18 more from seed. I plan on grouping them a bit as you have, and can't wait to see the results. Thank you for your lovely video.
I just wondered if on rare plants you've tried taking leaf cuttings to build up your stock faster, as shown here by "Sausagefingers Gardeningtips" www.youtube.com/@sausagefingersgardeningtip2326 and what you thought?
Hello there im new to Daliah tubers i just wanted to ask you i just went and got some tubers from b & q can i divide the shop tubers i just got that are still in the original bags? or do i need to put them in pots just the way they and when they get some little shoots then divide them up? im just confused and dont want to do them the wrong way around and mess them up. as i cant afford to get lots of tubers i rather divide them up my self. so please do let me know so i can start them off. a fantastic video step by step instructions and big thank you to heather for doing all the hard work at the back doing camra work with out her we couldnt see this video. another thing do put any ferilizers for the daliahs? do they need any food?
Hi Aleshaa. Yes, it is possible to divide shop bought tubers. It’s best to get them growing in a bit of compost, but don’t cover them too much, you need to be able to see the shoots when they start to grow. Once they are obvious, it’s then okay to cut the tuber up, remembering that each shoot needs a piece of tuber to grow from until it starts to grow its own roots. See another of my videos for more details “Growing dahlias month by month episode 5: early April”. Yes, you need to feed your dahlias somehow. I use my own make compost, but it’s okay to use Growmore, or any other general fertiliser. Remember to keep them well watered once they are growing strongly. But don’t over water them when they are young plants, because the tuber can rot in standing water.
I’ve overwintered Dahlias for the past 4 years and had no problems with any “mother tubers” rotting. This looks quite severe and un productive for regular gardeners. Having said that I bring mine indoors.
Hi Geoff and Heather. I really enjoy your videos, I have been watching them for over 5 years. I have noticed that you have insulated your greenhouse. Could you please give some details about what you have used. I'm hoping to start my tubers much earlier in my greenhouse this spring.
Hi Beatrice. I use the plastic bags in which bed companies deliver new mattresses! Whenever I see a delivery van I ask the driver if he has any spare bags, they are usually happy to get rid!
There's a pigeon competition where the birs are colored and one lone female is colored as well. You let them all go and you score points for the number of times your birds color is on the females
