Hi Andrew I’m unsure why you would cut the hackle underneath…have you tried fishing it with the hackle? If you left the hackle wouldn’t the fly have more floatability?
An absolutely indispensable fly on the creeks and rivers of Michigan and the Driftless regions. Drop one of Yvon Chouinard's Pheasant Tail & Partridge wet flies off the end and you are going to be in business. Plus, the Hippie Stomper is a joy to tie, and once you've gotten proficient you'll be a much better fly tier.
LOL. You tie a nice fly and no doubt you have had great success with this pattern. The water walker has been a winner for many folks for many seasons. Just don't try to pass this off as new pattern, bud.@@andrewgrillosflyfishingfly1517
Hi Jer, Replying to mouth breathing cretin fly police cuts into my passion for aggressive inline rollerblading. Thank you for making the internet a safer place I bet the dancin Ricky is a little big for your local streams around boulder. Best of luck in your quest, be well
After trying a lot of flies for carp in the Denver area over the last 2 years, the only one I've hooked fish on is this fly. Unfortunately I lost the only one I picked up from the shop to one fish that almost spooled me and then broke me off. Been looking for this fly frantically ever since, and now I'm pretty excited to get some materials and tie some up. Thanks for the tutorial
Andrew, thank you for the excellent video. I note that you use 2mm for for the overbody for a size 12 hook. In the Aug-Sept, 2018 Fly Fisherman Charlie Craven suggests 1mm foam. I've tried it both ways. Naturally the 1mm foam gives a slimmer profile. How do you feel about this? Keep the tutorials coming. Les Harris
I found an awesome salmonfly pattern on RU-vid and made a bunch of notes. Then I just saved the video and threw my notes away. Now the video is gone; got pulled off for some reason and I've been bummed, until I found this today. This style is exactly what I like; just super super BUGGY and a true low-rider. I suspect this will stomp when Chubby's get over-fished like they always do. What I'm trying to say in this rambling is: THANKYOU
This is without a doubt a masterfully tied and beyond well thought out pattern. Thank you Andrew for taking the time to demonstrate how to tie this awesome mouse. All that I can say is WOW!
hi Wizard, glad you like it! It's one of my favorite creations 've ever come up with. I felt like most mice available in 2010 were kind of off because mice swim and push water in the surface film and do not delicately skiter and skate on the surface. Anoher popular mouse at that time fished well and cast like crap., as it was kind of like a wet sock riding on a frisbee
hey bud, if you knew much about both flies' lineage you'd probably understand that both originated around 15+ years ago in Chile, where Brent Taylor and I both guided. great minds think alike!
Hi there. I am pretty new to this game and appreciate your videos. Do you fish this all year long, or are there certain bugs you are trying to imitate with this fly? How do you decide what color to fish and when? Thx.
Hi Geo, The Hippie Stomper is a "general attractor," which means it incorporates some fishy components and doesn't specifically imitate anything. On that note, I fish my confidence colors which are purple, red, lime, or orange
The Pool Toy has been my favorite hopper pattern for years. The fish love it, and it's the best for suspending heavier droppers. Thanks for sharing the tying steps.
@@andrewgrillosflyfishingfly1517 right on I appreciate it!! Not sure I’d agree it’s less exciting… any hopper pattern is a blast. It fishes great and have been wanting to learn how it’s done and try my hand at a few. Cheers!!
Hey brother, the hippie stomper provided one of the more memorable terrestrial dry fly dates of all time for me with some sizeable WY germs. Not sure what you’re going through but happy you’re sittin’ at the vice. Hit me up any time of you wanna go for a float.
Great fly and great tie… stoked to see you posting again! can you substitute other materials for the chenille? I love the material but it doesn’t have a lot of movement… and what other colors work for the pattern? Can’t wait for more vids!
hi CJ! you could try Medium or large round rubber instead of the chenille. (good luck finding large!) with regard to colors: I'd try any combo of pink, purple, red, or brown. I'll keep working on videos for the foreseeable future. I accidentally uploaded this to the wrong account back in may of 2021, and just put it where it belongs
Thank you so much Kjartan, Happy Tying and good luck! When you have a moment, please email me a picture of the fly in action in Sweden. I love seeing the fish my flies catch in far-off places
On the smaller versions (16-20) do you still do the two captures on the foam or just x wrap from the back all the way to the eye and then back track for the dubbing, hackle, wing, etc? I'm having trouble getting all this stuff onto the smaller hooks. Any other modifications?
Hi there DrRHThorndyke! You've got it figured out, remember that less is more when scaling the fly down. The only modification I like is to use a wing of hot pink and gray for a high viz option
