The first thing you said about smsf holders: they have more money. That is the most important part. You wouldn't even consider setting up an smsf unless you had upwards of half a mill in your super and were still in the build phase.

I'm sending a cause and effect error here. Surely the SMSF balances are larger at least in part because the overheads (financial advisor, accountant etc) only make sense for larger balances? So if you're not stashing much away in super then you're unlikely to set up a SMSF and transfer your balance into it from whatever retail or industry fund you are enrolled in.

The point is exactly that about stashing money away given super is so difficult so many people won’t contribute beyond employee contributions unless they get a kick from their accountant or financial planner if they have one

@@felcorpsupportCheers, I reckon that makes sense. If I switched to a SMSF and started paying out a fixed amount for these services I'd probably also start taking their advice seriously.

@@alexmccutcheon7381 yes the return on the advisor fees you pay long term can be hundred of thousands more money at retirement than just the few thousand dollars you spend each year with an advisor

With respect, totally disagree with the premise. I suggest SMSF members are likely to be far more aggressive in pursuing tax effective, riskier investment which match their risk profile rather than the homogeneous outcomes offered by big funds. Accountants, beyond tax advice if you're smart enough to ask for it, and auditors add squat.

Interesting thought. But that is the whole premise. SMSF members are engaged because they’ve at least had convos with their accountant and advisors around risk profiles. Contributing factor to why they are larger than retail funds

So what do I do?

Speak to your accountant or seek a good financial planner and ask about how much you need for retirement. Then create a plan with the advisor and begin preparing for your retirement
