Lawd have mercy, this done finally fixed a major annoyance of my 1990 E30. It was a bit tough to get them to let loose from the dash and I managed to get all of the louvers misaligned (i.e., popped out of their cradles) on one of the center ones (but fortunately was able to get them all back in cuz none of them were broken), but I finally got them all tightened up. The hardware store sold me slightly smaller washers than #10, but the upside was they fit VERY tightly on the pegs and thus couldn't move out of place as I wrestled the vent back in place. So glad to have found this video cuz I was wracking my brain trying to find the best way to address this issue. Would never have figured the vents just rotate right out of the dash. THANKS!

Probably worth noting, shortening the lower shaft actually increases your throw. You just showed everyone how to install a short shifter so it can act like a long shifter...

I soaked mine in a turkey bag with trans fluid. Paint bubbled right off.

So I'm hindsight best to remove lower radiator hose so you don't bathe your block.

Got a question I installed a cobb short shifter in my 08 wrx and I have to force the shifter all the way to the left or right depending what gear I’m in do you know why it could be that hard? Like I have to force it and sometimes even force it into gear? Shifter problem? Or do you think it could be more?

Thank you! I know this is a 4 year old video but I just did this today. I have an 87 325is with near perfect interior and the vents have driven me nuts for years.

Note to anyone who does this, you’ll need to remove your battery and the coolant tank (most likely) to get access with your socket to the spark plugs. That random wire everyone is talking about goes under and across the engine, simply release the connection and make note of where the wire fed through. The video makes it look super simple, and it’s a great reference but there are some tricky angles with bolts and spark plugs to deal with. All worked out in the end though!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I did exactly what you did, washing, and everything. You cured a 20 year disease for me! Those darn vent fans. I used to just slip a piece of folder paper in between the vent and dash. This was a thousand time better!

Did you not have to set the spacing on the new spark plugs?
