Does the SDI output have significant latency (outputting to imag) I read somewhere that the latency can be significantly reduced if embedded audio is turned off? or is that for HDMI , is lag/latency a problem on your jobs going to imag? shame you cant genlock, however if the latency is built into the camera gen-locking wont fix that?

Good question, I think it depends what sort of things you like best. Hamburg and the port area had a lot of nautical things of interest, that was helped while we were there as there by a huge regatta that weekend, which made it all really interesting and obviously that won’t be there unless you’re lucky. Lubeck had some quite nice historic buildings, the gate the Rathaus etc. but it wasn’t all like that, some parts are quite modern but plenty to see on a day trip.

Appreciate your review. I know its 4 years old but I recently upgraded my UX90 to CX350 and X2. Share a couple of observations. I don't like SD cards slots blink orange while recording instead of solid red. In the manual if there is a card error you will get a rapid blink which would be difficult to pick up. The CX350 HDMI socket is hard to access its so deep it's hard to insert and to remove the cable you have yank the cable instead of the head of the connector. I think the menu is also unintuitive and between X2 and CX350 they put important settings in completely different places. I tried using VLOG for greater dynamic range but found the image soft, more noisy and changed the wb, and I could no longer use zebras making it difficult to judge exposure. Strange they have Time code port but no Genlock which is what is need to lock cameras to the same clock. I could go on but I still use it because its still the best value 1" camcorder but it has lots strange things I don't like. I'd prefer the Canon XF605 but its around 4k. Seems like there hasn't been much improvement in camcorders.
@apntv
@apntv 3 месяца назад
Thank you for the feedback, it’s always useful getting other peoples observations and I think it proves how difficult it must be to build the perfect camera as everybody has slightly different requirements and ways of working. It irritated me initially that it did not record MP4 in camera, why? I could see no reason why not and yet over the years I got used to it and it’s not really bothered me much. The SD card lights is a good example, when I bought a Panasonic G80 camera it had a flashing red icon on screen to show you when recording and the flash rate was quite slow, so I would often look at the screen and think it wasn’t recording and in extreme cases hit the record button turning it off, I made my comments known and eventually that was changed in a firmware update. Just yesterday, for the first time in many, many years I had an SD card issue while recording, I always record onto two cards and I immediately spotted card 2 had a problem. The camera kept on recording and card 1 was fine, after the take, I was able to repair the card ok. I agree the colours can be confusing, like every battery charger on earth seems to have a different colour scheme for charging and charged, it’s a shame there is no standard. The HDMI socket can be a problem with large HDMI plugs, although those often come with thick and heavy HDMI cable which is not ideal anyway, the recess does help prevent strain on the socket but I tend to use thin cables with smaller plugs anyway, which are easier to fit, cause less strain, but you are absolutely right. You tend to have to pull the cable to remove them. Having come from a Panasonic PX 270 previously I find this menu an absolute joy and much easier to navigate, also much easier than my experience with Sony cameras, I guess it takes a while to get used to any menu. As always, there are a few irritations, not being able to switch audio from manual to auto while recording because you can only access it from the menu, as the layout does not allow for an extra physical switch, which again for me is a minor irritation and price point often dictates such compromises. I still haven’t done a great deal with VLOG, getting correct exposure is very important to avoid noise so that might be something you would get better results from as you get used to it and experiment a little. Genlock would be lovely I agree. I am often using multiple cameras in a live set up, again I’m sure it’s all down to cost. Over five years on and this is still my favourite camcorder, I’ve got used to its quirks and haven’t found anything I want to replace it with so far. I’ve used the XF350s but never had the opportunity to try 650, I hear good things from some people though as you say it is more expensive, less now than when it first came out when it was double the price. I’m not a huge fan of Canon products generally, but I know a lot of people like this one and at the end of the day it’s all about what fits your budget and works best for you. again it’s good to get other peoples take on using it. :)

@apntv
@apntv 4 месяца назад
As always these things depend totally on your use case, workflow and how you like to work and the kit you feel comfortable with. If you feel more comfortable with a G9 then it would also be good. A quick Google bought up a piece from The Slanted Lens on using it for wildlife which you might also find interesting. I haven’t used the 350 for wildlife work myself but I would say the following, it has a great zoom range without having to swap lenses, it can prerecord so you don’t miss the action when you press record, it has IR mode, but I think you would need some IR lighting to make good use of that. The 350 form factor works well for me without having to have lots of addons hanging off the smaller DSLM body but it’s a matter of choice I guess. We run a Facebook group if you wish to join, I think we have users in there doing similar work. At the end of the day they are both fine cameras.

@apntv
@apntv 4 месяца назад
You can stay the first night but we did a short cruise on the first day each time. We never booked a marina, they almost always managed to squeeze us in, although we missed the last slot in Delft basin but managed to find a free mooring beside the road a few mins away. Later we noticed some of the visitors had gone and there were spaces, so it’s all a matter of timing. For Amsterdam we left quite early to make sure we got a good space as we stayed there for the whole weekend. You can call ahead, and during the busier season that’s probably a good idea, we have tended to go just off season, outside of school holidays. You usually return the boat on the last afternoon and stay on the boat overnight and clear the boat first thing in the morning.we haven’t had any problems finding a space to date. One harbour master, on Kaag lake, sounded a bit cross that we hadn’t rung him before entering the marina but that was the only one.

Locaboat lent us these charts with the boat manual but we had the option to buy them to keep too. They are standard waterways charts, Baz from Happy Yachts/Locaboat highlighted our planned route for us, checking for closures or planned works to avoid, which made it easy to find our way at a glance. We would check our route each day, and then program it into the Nautical Maps app, which we would use out on deck rather than taking the paper charts outside, but the current map was always ready on the chart table downstairs, and was better for quickly looking at the bigger picture of where we were.

Hi great video. We are planning a similar trip. I want to know, were you allowed to sleep anywhere you stopped on the boat or did you have to book Marinas or hotels? How easy was it to use the bridges and water locks.. who showed you the rules of the water?
@apntv
@apntv 4 месяца назад
Unlike France you are not allowed to stop anywhere, most places have moorings or marinas, some are even free but most you have to pay for. We never booked any in advance and on one occasion we missed the last space but found some free mooring a bit further away by the roadside. Many moorings have power and water, you can pay for those when needed via an app, sometimes it is included in the marina fee. In the Netherlands almost all bridges and locks are operated by personnel, either at the bridge or remotely and you sometimes need to call them by telephone as you approach. The number is usually displayed on the bridge. We booked with Locaboat, who spent about an hour, the first time, going through the rules, signage and procedures from a big manual which you take with you on the boat, so it was all pretty straight forward. Then they took us out on the boat so you get the chance to practice manoeuvring and mooring up before taking the boat. Did you see our second Netherlands video where we go to Amsterdam and beyond? You will see in that where we did have some issues with the bridges causing delays but nothing too serious. We also have one from Canal Du Midi in France too. We hope you have a great trip, we really enjoyed them all so far.

Do you have to be in radio communication with the various locks and bridges? If so, is there a language barrier problem?
@apntv
@apntv 6 месяцев назад
No. It would be a good idea and very convenient but you would need to have a marine radio license for the country and have your own radio equipment, as a radio is not fitted on the boat. We do actually have Marine radio licenses, but we would need to buy a VHF handheld and get the relevant permits from the country. The alternatives are that you can ring the bridge control and the numbers are usually posted on the bridges. In practical terms, we found it much easier to try and follow another boat, who can often contact the bridges and get them open ahead of you. Ringing each bridge and trying to explain where you are based on our pronunciation of the name of the bridge can be tricky at times. :-)
