We did your journey last December on Hurtigruten and it was magical in the snow. Our trip to North Cape was cancelled because the road was impassable, we had a lovely few hours wandering around Honningsvag instead. Having seen your video of North Cape I don’t feel disappointed that we missed it to be honest!
Absolutely stunning!. Michael, you are in the process of producing and presenting a definitive, go-to guide for anyone contemplating a cruise up the west and northern coasts of Norway on Hurtigruten. It is peerless. What a remarkable piece of "travelography"! There we are, I may just have invented a brand new word in your honour. Congratulations.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Thank you for sharing, I love being able to see places that I probably won’t be able to get to myself. Seems so strange to stand more or less on the Russian border in these current times. Enjoyed the video and will look for more of your series now 👍
Thanks Paul, I have just come back from filming at a different part of the Russian border in Estonia. There are two castles facing each other. Video will be up a little bit later in the year or maybe early next year. Michael.👍
You’ve seen more of Norway than I have, by taking this trip. Being Norwegian myself, living in Bergen, I usually travel to the UK. Maybe I’ve seen more of the UK, than Norway. Not sure. At least I’ve been to most places in west, east and south of Norway. But never further north than Molde. Anyway, amazing videos 😊 Thanks for sharing and welcome back 😊
I think it is often the way, that you see more of places away from where you live than nearer where you live. There are large parts of the UK that I haven’t seen yet. The boat though was a great way of seeing Norway. I didn’t appreciate just how long a country it was until travelling on it. Michael.
@@michaelhortin I did travel with Hurtigruten to Molde once. I have never been further north, but do want to take the whole Hurtigruten route one day. Still, I somehow think it will happen when I have retired, but who knows 😀 Maybe bring along the car onboard Hurtigruten to Kirkenes and drive back home.
Just six more subscribers needed to reach your first 1000 mark...it is so deserved, Michael. Hopefully by the time you get to Tallinn you will pass this landmark. Another original, informative and entertaining post. Thank you.
As a naturalized Norwegian I have avoided visiting North Cape for over 40 years, although admittedly I did watch Børning = Burning, the 2014 Norwegian movie about a car race from Oslo to North Cape, that offers more entertainment value than North Cape itself. Too many tourists are visiting the "top ten" (or is it twenty) sights in Norway, which means they are mainly experiencing other frustrated tourists, along with a lack of toilet facilities. There are lots of great things to see in Norway, but some of the less popular places may be more fun.
The crew said we were very lucky. Bjorn commenting on my Hurtigruten ship tour video said they had, had a great summer in Norway. I prefer to think the sun shines on the righteous 😳🙃😉👍
Well to answer your question. The Coastal express was founded in 1893 by Richard With. There has been many different companies true the years , But Hurtigruten was founded in 05/06 after the 2 last companies OVDS and TFDS merged in to 1 , today under the Name Hurtigruten Norway with 7 Ships on the coastal route and Havila with 4.
I'm a little confused here. When you are filming on the promenade deck you are telling us that you do this in Tromsø. I must be living in another Tromsø, because that is not the Tromsø where I live. But great video. Had a round trip on the same ship 5 years ago. Greetings from Tromsø 😀
Hi Bjorn, Thanks very much for your kind comment, particularly bearing in mind my error. When I first saw your comment, I thought what was that about. I then went to watch the video again, no Arctic Cathedral or Tromsø on screen. Im annoyed with myself, as I check these things a lot. For some reason the blue sky at Tromsø, had merged in my mind with the blue sky when I went to Sortland! I did though stop twice at Tromsø when I was in Norway and on the ship. There is a video already up from my time there on the journey north, and in a few weeks time they’ll be a video, from my journey south when I was there just before midnight! I thought Tromsø was great and hope to return with the channel in the future, maybe for a winter cruise. Hope you’re well Michael
@@michaelhortin Hi Michael, All is well here in Tromsø, and so am I 😀 We have had, and still have, the best summer ever recorded. Good for us so we are in a better shape to meet what is coming. The sun will be below the horizon from november 21. until january 21. Later in september the winter tourists will start to arrive and hopefully there will be lots of northern lights for them to see. We now have 35-40 direct fligths to and from every major european city each week. Pretty crowded here during winter season😄 Wish you all the best from Tromsø
Wow! Even allowing for the not so cheap cable car ride, that was an expensive 3 hour tour! Of course, Norway isn't the most reasonably priced country in the world, but imagine having pre-booked your tour only to be met by a typically grey and misty day! You were indeed blessed with stunning weather! Yet another stunning post!
Yes it was expensive. Day was made more of a challenge as the bridge was closed to traffic. i had spotted that before we got there, otherwise I may have used uber/taxi and not done museum. As you will see save for one shore stop and an afternoon in Bergen I was blessed with the weather when in Norway. Thankfully the next trip I am planning is a lot cheaper!
When I went to Tromso in February this year, a Portuguese tour guide on a boat told me the architecture was inspired by the mountains. I am thinking of coming back to Tromso in the summer.
Oh I had heard iceberg, but knowing me I miss heard. I go back to Tromso in a future video and got very lucky with the midnight sun and the Arctic Cathedral...
When I first got there, the similarities were really marked. So it was interesting when one of the staff working there confirmed there were links between the two cathedrals. Michael
Nearly at your first 1K subscribers, and you so deserve it. Once again a terrific piece of work and, I loved the built in jeopardy - will he make it back in time! Well done Michael.
I enjoyed this video very much. Lovely scenery, lovely airports and beautiful aeroplanes. And good information. I’m in Norwich and KLM City Hopper flies to Schipol frequently from Norwich airport. I have subscribed. Thank you.
I am pleased you enjoyed it. I find for certain routes using KLM into Amsterdam can work quite well. Getting to London airports is at least a two hour journey for me. Michael
Going Amsterdam first and then onto your actual destination is crazy - too many options for delays with this hub and spoke approach to an “international destinations”. As someone who travels by air at least every two weeks this is a massive no. Amsterdam is one of the worst airports in Europe and certainly worse than both Manchester and Heathrow for delays and getting around. U.K. needs a policy to divest flights from both Manchester and Heathrow. Good to hear Doncaster is reopening and this should be setup to be the east coast Manchester, splitting the traffic to ease congestion both on the air and on the roads. Leeds is in the wrong place and just too small, so is pointless. Train links need putting into all the minor airports or rail link services direct to the mainline stations. Hub and spoke within the UK makes much more sense. Hourly or bi-hourly flights on small clipper aircraft needs to be in place. However, given the new government who is against everyone and everything but giving our money away - it’s never happening. Heathrow needs to expand to, no more delays, it needs to happen.
Hi, I’m aware of some of the issues at Amsterdam, but on balance for trips like the one in this video it works out better for me. I had quite a long layover between flights, as I mentioned in the video and used it to work on this channel. if you don’t live near London or Manchester, it’s quite a pain getting to the airport. Overall it’s a case for me of the least worst option at times. Michael
Went through preclearance at Dublin last week on my first trip to the US. It was completely painless, except having to go through a second lot of security; can’t imagine going to the US otherwise than via that route now.
I reccomend the Plymouth - santander ferry, less than 24 hours to Spain by boat, northern Spain is an excellent location to explore. The ferry from Portsmouth takes longer and is not as good.
The lifts onboard were Kone M series, unfortunately on MS Nordlys, that vessel caught fire in November 2011, and all 3 lifts were modernized with new fixtures, and having a better design. The Entire vessel was taken out of service throughout the end of 2011, in order to recover from the Fire Damage. When the buttons were replaced, the passenger lifts, were fitted with Drucegrove Speakers, so to speak out which Deck you were on, and which direction the lift travelled.
Too bad the Spa areas weren't safe at that time when you travelled with Hurtigruten, but on the vessel I was on, it was safe to have a spa, but only a few of my family members phased their feet in, only to have a nice dip. I could see both pools from Deck 7, whilst outside.
I made my first trip with Hurtigruten before i got COVID-19. It was nice to get a ride on Hurtigruten, but I only travel with my family between Tromsø and Trondheim. We boarded MS Nordlys. The clock was just 23:45 on the 6 August. I got off in Trondheim on the 9 August just before 09:00. At that time, my target to travel with ATB went slightly difficult. Therefore I managed to take a brief visit to Orkanger, and even testing out rides with Svipper in the north, using the Entur app. This was also the first time that a 24 hour ticket had been tested in the app. The Journey with MS Nordlys was quite fun, mostly outside my cabin which was also on Deck 3, the same deck from where I got on and off the vessel. Also on Deck 3 was the reception and the Guest Laundry. There was also a Sauna on Deck 2, which I saw while exiting the lift, that you can see in the reception area. There was also another lift on the other side of the Vessel, and a service lift located at the middle of the ship. Normally these doors would've been closed and locked, but other times they were held open to give access to the Car Deck. On Deck 4 there was a souvenir shop, and Torget, an eating area, followed by additional restrooms. The Disabled restroom on Deck 7 wasn't working, so the only choice could only be on Deck 4. Every cabin had a Restroom as well, but it didn't make good space for shaving after taking a hot shower. I'm not sure if it was safe for me to shave if I stayed in a disabled cabin, but it wasn't reserved for me, when I received the Envelope Hurtigruten Staff gave to me. Lightbulbs with Warm White lightning wasn't so good onboard the vessel. The best views were from Deck 7, either from the bar or the bakery. The bakery closed around 17:00, though it was possible to pass the bakery, or stay there while the bakery remained closed.
