on my 2006 TDV6 the suspension compressor, alternator and battery all failed within a short time. the compressor was running a lot due to being worn out and I think this might have been what killed half the diodes in the alternator rectifier and then all the AC (chopped DC) might have ruined the battery.
Much more difficult to do with drywall installed, but this is still the only viable option I've seen without tearing out more drywall to install a remodel box. Thank you for this. What's hilarious is that I did exactly what you mentioned. I have a shim and it didn't work at all for the twisted 2x4. thanks again!
1- Celica Died yesterday - not far away - Today got ride to Swap Dead Battery & pick up New Alternator. : ) . . . . = | 2- Use JUST Battery to get car home, BUT --> when hooking it up - (NEVER [stupidly] thought to *UNHOOK Old Alternator) 8 {|* _~ SMOKE! ~_ * 2. a. - * WHY THE SMOKE? ? I have a whistle on my Disco4 coming from more or less that place, hidden by the suspention.. No power loose inside of the cockpit, lights radio and sunroof works like no problem at all... Thw whistling is only when I accelerate on 1st and 2nd gear, then disappears... Do you think alternator could be the problem?
Thanks for sharing! Got this knocked out in no time thanks to your video, we had the same issue. Alternator started smoking and the LR3 started acting crazy. Nice vid Derek, thanks again.
Derek, Just watched your video...I thought it was the best "how to" video I'd ever seen...especially well made of someone like me who is easily daunted by the complexities of mechanics and especially LR mechanics....a friend of mine just told me that land rover has been turning owners into mechanics for seventy years...your video made the process less painful. Thank you! Kevin
Yes. I should have been more careful. Looks as though it will survive though. It's been draining every day and is mostly empty now. I'll likely post an update sometime as to how it fared.
QUICK NOTE FOR V6 ENGINED LR3!!! This video has many useful tips for the V6, but the alternator is situated differently (and is even easier to replace): once you remove the engine top cover (4x10mm nuts) and the air filter connecting tube, access is easy and all from the top of the engine. Other than that, all directions and tips apply. Great video, thanks!!
Good practical video, nice one. A small heads up though, once you swap washers on the pole, as in, opening the new unit, your warranty will be invalidated!!!!
Great video! My buddy and I to replace my alternator today and this video made it easy. I have no experience with cars and I did in 2 hours. Even got the part at auto zone which was the only place that had it on stock. Mine did have the 4 prong connector port so I didn't have to change them out. You saved me a ton of money. Thanks!

+Mr. Dirt Rancher 450 if I recall correctly. I'll check to make sure. My neighbor had two trees standing next to each other and this past Saturday evening, one started leaning toward his driveway and fell down during the night. (We had a late frost here in the spring that stunted or killed a bunch of trees in our area.) Sunday afternoon, after we got home from church, I pulled out that saw and my ropes and felled the other tree and cut them both up into firelogs (for splitting after they season) in a little over an hour. It was a delight to be able to help my neighbor. (He has shown kindness to us as well in the past.) I definitely recommend Husqvarna (or Stihl, but Stihl can be a little more pricey). :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this video. I had to do this last weekend after the thing completely died on me. I just followed what you showed and it went in great. So helpful. Thanks a million.
+Derek Granquist I got it from O'Reilly Auto Parts. It was just like what you had. I had to move the four slotted piece over and washer nut and everything. Remanufactured for $188.
Hi Derek, Thanks for the great video! This was a huge help! I am happy to know that you can perform this install without having to remove the fan assembly. My only recommendation to anyone else attempting this is when installing your new alternator is to first install the top bolt to hold the alternator. Without it, it is really difficult to line up the bottom 2 bolts. Also, you can access the top bolt with a small 13mm ratchet by reaching down from the airbox hole instead of from below. Also, don't unscrew the screw on the serpentine pulley tensioner. Just insert a 3/8 socket drive into the square hole and turn it left with the cheater pipe like shown. I got a little confused by what was being used in the video. Otherwise, you will need to re torque the bolt. THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO. It was much more helpful than anything I've seen on forums. Thanks Derek!
+Joel Thompson Thank you for the compliments! I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for your additional comments! For me, coming down from the top was much harder than coming up from the bottom, but we each have our own way. :) (Looks like someone skimmed through the video instead of watching it all. ;) In reference to paragraph 2, the top bolt, see 14:00. I do reference installing the top bolt first. In reference to paragraph 3, the tensioner pulley, see 3:30. I do describe using just a 3/8 socket to relieve the tension on the belt.)
Excellent video and thanks for taking the time to share this with us all. Do you know the OEM name of the alternator? I am in the middle east at present so need to get one shipped in. Hopefully you add more as time goes on because they are very good. BTW looks exactly like my LR3, Blue 2007.
+mstrax Here is the alternator I purchased to replace the bad one. Let me know if you need more info. www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/alternator/duralast-alternator/88001_23521_4452/
