As I think you know, I love Jonas Kaufmann singing lieder simply because nobody can sing them as masterfully and beautifully as he can. Someone called him the "Lieder King" and I completely agree with that accolade. With Helmut Deutsch accompanying him this is such an exquisite performance to listen to.
I could listen to Jonas Kaufmann singing lieder all day. Luckily I have his Strauss Lieder cd so I frequently do! He is such a master of interpretation both then and now. This is so joyful to listen to. Only Strauss could write a melody to words about being broke and actually cheer you up! Helmut Deutsch plays this beautifully. I'll shut up now. Don't want to keep my horse waiting! 😂
What an absolutely gorgeous sound. Someone, obviously much cleverer than me, commented below about whether there were changes needed in Jonas Kaufmann's techniques and how his voice has changed. Well, I wouldn't presume to know how Jonas produces his voice but, having been a follower of his for many years, I can tell you in 2024 what hasn't changed. His production of gorgeous, differing tones and the control of them hasn't changed; the richness and strength hasn't changed; his ability to sustain long phrases with superb breath control hasn't changed; his unique understanding of emotional and dramatic expression, which enables him to bring song lyrics to life, hasn't changed. As he has matured he has seemed to be able to tap into the baritonal element of his voice for the lower to middle points of his vocal range, which make the higher tenor elements sound even more stunning. Oh, and he still looks drop dead gorgeous, that hasn't changed!
Oh the pure joy in Jonas Kaufmann's voice in his interpretation of the delight in sending his loving thoughts airborne to his love. This gorgeous performance puts a huge grin on my face - his gleefulness is catching! He's amazing.

Such gorgeous tones and phraseology. You are an absolute Master at singing Lieder. I love the way you build the phrases up slowly, gradually towards a peak before starting again with a new phrase. It's like being carried along with the character on his journey towards his lover. Absolutely gorgeous singing Jonas Kaufmann.
Heureusement, Les BELLES VOIX DOMINES ! LES SCÈNES SONT TRISTE LES CHANTEURS DEVAIT EXIGER UNE SCÈNE PLUS JOLIE COMME DANS. ILIYA Q’elle QUE. ÂNES AVANT. !!
Oh my goodness! I didn't realise that this gorgeous song is about the death of the boy. Suicide by drowning. I thought it was a lullaby, which I suppose it is in a horrific kind of way. Jonas sings it very beautifully with gorgeous expression.
I think it was a Prelude to a new song, not just for the boy, but for you, too, Jonas. With such a skilled and beautiful voice it is no wonder you went on to achieve further and greater acclaim, not to mention absolutely knock-out performances in Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, Beethoven, Korngold...oh, just so many!
My God that's so beautiful. It has a similarity to "I'm Wunderschõnen Monat Mai" ("Twas in the lovely month of May.") Yet again, Jonas Kaufmann's voice is completely enchanting. I just want to listen to him sing this gorgeous song over and over again!
Well your voice is a great show of strength and control and anyone hearing it would congratulate you on a job well done! I love your characterisations in the song. It is so fantastic to listen to. I am so enjoying following this boy's journey. 😂
Jonas you were so talented at singing Lieder then and you are an absolute master of it now. I am in so much awe of how beautiful your voice is. This is breathtaking.
Whatever your thoughts on the quality of this recording - I don't hear anything unpleasant - you must surely appreciate the mellow and beautiful tones of Jonas Kaufmann's younger voice. I strongly disagree with the person who said it was lacking in softness and emotion. It is a superb and expressive rendition.
Hah! It is actually raining, blowing and snowing here. Lol. Baking a cake might warm me up! Gorgeous lied sang brilliantly by Jonas Kaufmann. I like how it turns into a cheerful waltz. Fantastic. Helmut Deutsch plays it beautifully.
