Living and playing with old bicycles! Mixing business with pleasure with my bicycle obsession, with occasional diversions, such as the pack of rescued greyhounds, a never ending house renovation, and the odd interesting motorised conveyance!
Ex rally driver and vintage car writer, nature lover, proud leftie liberal, turned back to bicycles in the 90s, and jumped in with both feet, messenger, cargobike courier, founder of BikeRescue, the bicycle recycling & youth project in York. Took over an old bike shop in 2017. Now concentrate on my minor but much loved collection of old Roadsters, dutch bikes and unusual vintage stuff.

11 gauge in a bicycle wheel. Wow! Great perseverance. Bizarre how the previous builder opted for two such different lengths for the same side.

My theory is that he encountered the same mistake as I described, but instead of rebuilding, he just used 9 short spokes to correct his mistake.

Are the brake linings made from asbestos? If they were, when did they stop using asbestos?
@unbalancedcrank

They stopped in the 1980s, before this bike was made, but you raise a worthwhile point for people with older bikes.

The pedals on my bike used to turn as I pushed the bike. I discovered that the cone adjustment on the none drive side of the gear hub was too loose. I tightened it leaving a little slack and the pedals/crank arms now work as they should.

Reviewing what I said at the end, it occurred to me that the builder might have had the “9 long spokes phenomenon” and ducked out of it by simply cutting down 9 spokes!

It’s interesting for me to watch this again. The owner, Al, sadly had to give up cycling after a severe back injury, and the collection was dispersed. No fewer than 9 bikes in this video became mine. Six of them still are. Brown Tourist. Wayfarer. Trent Tourist. Rudge. Boulevard Tourist. Elizabethan. I also finished up with the maroon Superbe, Transit, Batavus Cambridge for a time.

Always wanted a bike with a drum brake. Looking at buying a used worksman with this brake up front and a 3 speed coaster brake wheel on the rear.

Here’s a tip; the later alloy shell ones are better at braking, and easier to build into a wheel or change a rim.

I do not want to spoil your party, but....have a look at how the drum brake sits / looks at 6:30 in your video and at your final result at about 33:10. Do you notice the difference? Sits a little high, doesn't it? As sb. with bikes with the same system, I can tell you for sure sth. went wrong. It is supposed to sit as it was in the beginning. This comment is not intended as criticism btw., but, as you intend to help people with this video on how to do things, let's do it right! (great idea for a follow-up video, I think ;)

I finally got an opportunity to enjoy this great hour at the Velocipedium headquarters. What a treat it was too! Interesting to learn about your lovely work stand. I hadn't appreciated how old it is. Such a quality bit of engineering. I loved my blue Moulton Mini Deluxe. This bike took me many miles, often trying to keep up with Dad on his full scale version. We enjoyed MBC rides also. Once I outgrew the Mini, it was passed on via the club for someone else to enjoy. The bike had some serious treatment from me, but was still going strong. Thanks for another mention, most kind.

Not a speck of rust to be seen on the light or chrome parts - how!? Also, why the modern shifter? Wouldn’t you prefer to use a tasteful retro one? Would the the rubber cover on the modern one fit the nasty old naked metal thumb-flicks to change gear? Great single handed riding. When you get to my age, that sort of things becomes near impossible.

This was a good video, not boring. I like a "condition assessment" type video format - say 10 minute video highlighting project condition when it comes in. It helps tell people what to look at when buying an old bike. I wish we had an annual evening ride event like yours in my town.

Well that looked like a fun evening jaunt. I’m jealous of the bicycle routes available to you! That’s a situation/life-syle luxury that is very slowly changing here in NYC. We have bicycle lanes on our busy streets & avenues, but very few neighborhoods with hedgerows! I enjoy watching your videos though I’m not a Raleigh aficionado and don’t collect bicycles. I started watching your channel because of “Goodfellow” & the “Poorman’s Rivendell” video, but your videos are a very pleasant distraction from my day-to-day. The new Van der Valk series is a fun distraction, too! No spoilers, please! It’ll be another few months before Season 4 makes its way to PBS here in The States! Best to you & Raven!

Hi from Michigan, US. What is the color of this superbe? It is wonderfull. I am the proud owner of a 1973 vintage Sports, from the German market, which somehow managed to get to the States. It is a extremely bad example of some kind of grey, and at this point the kindest thing I can do for this bike is to strip, sand blast, and repaint. I would very much like to paint the color of your bike. Are there any modern equivalents? Thanks Fred
@unbalancedcrank
@unbalancedcrank 8 дней назад
It was called Raleigh Green, but there are two colours that should provide a match. Land Rover Deep Bronze Green from 1950s - 70s. Make sure it’s DEEP, not plain Bronze Green. British Racing Green, used on Jaguar and MG etc in the same era.
