Asking David Pleasance about computers and expecting credible predictions is laughable. He admits to never so much as switching on an Amiga during his ridiculous tenure at Commodore. What *is* predictable is being informed that anything going wrong will be someone else's fault. Naturally Commodore went awry when David moved abroad so wasn't at the helm to steer the ship towards market domination.

The CD32 was very shoddy workmanship, bundled with wheezy cpu released in 1985 (the 020) and played 'multi-media' discs and shovelware games. If they had put in an 040 from a A4000, with a good chunk of fast ram, the machine would be at least £200 dearer, and nobody would have bought one! The PS1 did all of that for the same price. To be honest, I never play polygon games any more, and rather prefer 2D. I gave up on con-souls after the 360.

Amiga version compared to Atari STE, there's quite a few benefits to the Amiga version. Amiga version is higher resolution, 336x266 vs 320x240 Amiga audio at higher frequency 22khz (possibly 28khz) vs 12.5khz (recorded at 25khz but mixed at 12.5khz) from what I remember. Onscreen Colours: Amiga 32 vs Atari STE 16. Background animations on all levels for Amiga version. Both versions are at 50fps except tunnel sequences on Atari STE version. The tunnel sequence you showed for Atari STE is the second tunnel sequence on Amiga version. You mention that the PC version was done by Housemarque. Housemarque was 2 Amiga Developer teams; Bloodhouse (Stardust) and Terramarque (Elfmania) both from Finland. They teamed up together to make PC games. You also mention that PC Dos also got updated version called Super Stardust, not sure if you realise but Super Stardust is also an Amiga original, released only for AGA Amiga's and CD32.

We linked them both up to play Stunt car Racer. so cool, and still is. I think FS-UAE can do the same just edit config file.. Since you add port number to listen on, just do netstat in windows command prompt to find the port number on winuae.. and add this to fs-uae config. should also work.

Well, to be honest this isn't that impressive.... and the A500 isn't that humble. Now if this was running on an Atari ST THEN it would be VERY impressive. Games like Shadow Of The Beast were more technically impressive than this, and that game released in 1989.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
Beasts is no near as impressive as this. Actually it’s pretty bad in performance. Even the devs themself said they were ashamed. Best is really good looking tho. The first level at least and nice use of parallax dual playfield. Thing is the reason Beast is to bad gameplay wise is that they way they use sprites for the enemies make it very restricted. Compare to this where they enemies can move around as they fit.
@jamesthompson6557
@jamesthompson6557 Месяц назад
@@litjellyfish What dribble are you spouting? Shadow Of The Beast is "pretty bad in performance"?! Lol, erm, I think you might be a little confused - Shadow of The Beast runs at a locked 50 frames per second, all whilst displaying dozens of layers of parallax and with 160 colours on screen at times - please explain how this could possibly be considered "pretty bad in performance". Beast is a garbage game to play, but that is not the point I made. The point I made was Beast was released over 30 years ago and is TECHNICALLY more impressive that this alledgely impressive new game, which it is. Now that is not saying Metro Siege won't be a great game - it already looks like a better game to play that something like Beast, which was a glorified tech demo, but that does not magically make it technically impressive, which it definitely isn't.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
@@jamesthompson6557 not garbage but facts. Check the code yourself. And no it has a standard dual playfield with copper splits to scroll at different speed. However those different speeds never overlap so just looks like many different “layers” but in reality it’s only two (and in some case using sprites 3 layers of objects overlapping. ) So just two standard playfield = 8 + 8 colors. With most enemies just being 3 colors sprites. Main character is four overlayed sprites = 16 color. Again using copper creating more visible colors on screen. At some areas there is some 8 color bob enemies that are blitted into the front playfield but they are not so big. So that’s it. I know it looks nice and impressive. But again more smart tech art than any highly demanding or optimized code to run it. If you look at metro siege it does basically all this plus have enemy ai more advanced collision detection. Tile based bob system to save money and 2 main players and 4 enemies in quite big 16 colors bobs (which is think is the main reason it don’t run in 50fps - the blitter most likely runs out of juice before the cpu does) About what I meant with beast not being so optimized as cpu code wise It runs well so the performance of the game at 50fps is top of course. Totally agree with you on this. I meant in comparison to metro siege the code running Beast not as optimized. But it don’t have to :) the game still runs fine in the way it has been set up.
Месяц назад
@@litjellyfish Sorry, but no sale. :) Beast is technically a more impressive game than this to my eyes anyway. Due to RU-vid compressive I cannot take an ingame snap and do a colour count, but just from looking at it, it definitely does not look like it is using more palette changes/raster interrupts etc than Beast and certainly has less colours on screen. It also does not look like it is updating at the same frequency, however again this could be due to RU-vid compression. At the end of the day, Beast wowed back in '89. This game merely looks nice. Big difference.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
It’s ok that it’s that in your eyes. Just Dont confuse that with what is the reality :) Ñ what you mention about copper color splits it’s not very technically advanced. It’s just a core copper list. A game that changes more color than another with copper is not any tech. I mean it’s the copper who does it for free basically. Again I am talking about the game as a whole. And specially the code itself. That manages all this. Beast basically have pre calculated copper lists for many scenes = takes no performance at all. This game runs half beast. Maybe you missed what I wrote. That is due to blitting a lot bigger and more bobs with more color than beast. Then again I totally agree that beast blew my mind back then. But you really can’t compare a game that was released back then pushing at the time a hardware that was top notch. To a game made now for that hardware. Of course we are not going to be as impressed Again I am not taking about what game is best looking or what I like more. The only thing I objected against was the statement that beast was / is more technically impressive than metro siege = tech impressive = pushes the hardware the most. It’s not. It’s a lot simpler game code wise. Again that does not stop it from running smoother and also imo at least at places look better. But that is again due to how they restricted things. Beast is basically as you yourself said I think a tech demo for Amiga Well no point in arguing. We both like beast the Amiga and that is the most important

For an A500 that's not bad, kinda reminds me of Body Blows but in a street setting. Quite colourful for just the OCS chipset. I'm thinking they've probably used the Copper to get the shading on the pavement and road in addition to the sky gradient.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
I think they might do viper gradients on house and other “straight line” things. So it’s good and clever art direction for sure. Tech wise I am. Not super impressed. It’s a scrolling sub level. Using most likely just hardware scrolling. Sprites for the background parallax. And then the enemies seems to update 25 / 16 fps. But as said good tech art direction to make the most of all those colors
@rwxdesigns
@rwxdesigns Месяц назад
@@litjellyfish I doubt it would be sprites in the background for parallax, very rare in Amiga games, they would use dual playfield in games like Shadow of the Beast.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
@@rwxdesigns I am 100% sure it’s sprites. Very typical repeating pattern of repositioning sprites over the screen to form a second layer basically for free as long as you are ok with repeating content (which we a clearly see the buildings are) another giveaway is that the layer only has 3 colors which sprites have (unless you attach them) - I would guess it’s 2 or 4 sprites for the background. And then it’s 2x2 sprites used for the pole in front of everything that scrolls by Problem with dual playfield is that you only have 8 colors which for sure we have more here. I guess that if it’s not 32 at least it’s 16 colors. Actually there is many Amiga games that used this tech to form a second layer made out of sprites
@fattomandeibu
@fattomandeibu Месяц назад
@@litjellyfish I think with the shading we're seeing, it may be EHB, with 32 colours plus 32 colour half as bright mirror palette. So sprites for the background would make more sense.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish Месяц назад
@@fattomandeibu I think that would lock up too much DMA + bigger blots = even lower framerate. And honestly I don’t see why the foreground would need to use 64 colors. Heck some part of me was even thinking if they managed to pull it off with just 16 colors. I am 100% it’s just smart copper colors. Look at the buildings and the streets. So many straight lines areas with nice gradients. Say they have a base color palette and then they have say 2 x 2 colors set aside for the copper color stuff that means that at the same line they could use this for two different objects. It reserves 4 colors but from what I see in the video here from those 4 colors they create 18 unique colors. So just smart tech art. 32 colors. 3 color reserved for the sprite background and 4 colors for copper trickes. 32 - (4+3) 27 free colors plus copper colors. Or it’s just 32 basic colors with copper on background layer. Need to take some screenshot and check to be sure. Also you don’t really get sooo much more colors out of EHB. Maybe 16 usable at most. For a picture it might be worth it but for a game it’s a big no no and the reasons we seldom saw any EHB games

Just download the full Exowin3x torrent, but deselect all the games (the torrent shrinks to about 5gb). Then when ever you want to download and play something, download the full torrent again, EXCEPT deselect everything apart from the game you want, and download it. Put the downloaded .zip of the game into the "eXoWin3x\eXo\eXoWin3x" folder, and when you click "play" on the game's icon, it will ask if you want to install it. Seems to work so far!
