Mixbus 10 Pro is such an awesome DAW. I'm leaving ProTools for Mixbus for three reasons: one, because of the sound, two, fewer plugins are needed, and three, ProTools doesn't have scene recall.
I got the perpetual and permanent base version, mixbus 10 for free with my SSL2+. I absolutely LOVE that workflow already. The more i learn in college the more i just ADORE this. It's simple, yet elegant. It has everything I need and more! will definitely buy the PRO version in the future.
Ok so this is from 2022; i'm saying, I have also seen your recent video in which you praise the Harrison Mixbus 10 pro. Bro, between the BX SSL console and Harrison mixbus pro which would you recomend?
I'm going to say that I like the BX SSL better because of the compressor. It has that SSL smack, and Mixbus Pro doesn't have that, it just has the EQ, which is fine, and is a nice alternative to the Harrison EQ.
@@vigilantestylez Oh ok because the way i tried it yesterday was 1073 into the Dbx 160 into Tape into the SSL 4000 ... and even that made my mix sound 10x better haha ... but i'm gonna try it the way you just said and see which way sounds better ... i appreciate the work you put in to making this video bro! you're the GOAT for this fr!
Yeap bro! Gettin too technical people forget about the emotional aspect of mixing, like if aliasing and shit like that, would make a difference on wich is going to make it or break it into success! One thing i learned over the years is : dont mix for other engineers, mix for the artist and their art! Even if in technical aspects every mixing move was wrong, if it sounds good is good! I have had rough mixes with deesers on mixbus and guitar cab sim on snares but shit sounded great i couldnt undo it!!!! It is what it is!!!
As much as I appreciate and respect this approach it is only valid here as it sounds like you’re mixing pre mixed stems. In the real world mix where you get 80+ tracks with all individual channels I don’t really see how you can not bus things.
I’m new to your channel but you right And I’m tired of running out of that damn dsp with universal audio trying to mixing my music so I’m doing my homework on SSL channel strip from brainworks thank you for the input just subscribed
Thanks man! Welcome to the channel! Yeah I'm tired of getting ripped off by plug-in companies too. I do have a couple UAD plugins but this ilok constantly checking the license is just BS. I can never run those plugins without an internet connection. Smh..
@@vigilantestylez yeah UAD once you start using to many of the plugins it’s don’t let you assign anymore I got the Apollo x4 its great but that DSP and the price for the plugins is Crazy I’m about to buy the brainwork’s ssl 9000 it’s on sale so let me jump at this now
@vigilantestylez that was a very insecure response. I didnt need to be there i can hear it. It was well produced and recorded it sounded like a record from the moment you pressed play. I wasn't trying to devalue your mix. I was making a statement about the quality of raw recording
@@arnoldwatkins805 According to Serban Ghenea, the guy who mixes these records, the material they get is pre mixed from the producer and they usually have to remove plugins from the session or work with what's already there. That's no different than what I'm doing. And yes, you are trying to talk down about my mix because the tracks sound good already so I essentially did nothing. When you come to my channel with a good attitude, I'll give you one back. Have a good day.
Iv got a little tascam 8 track porta studio I use it with the mpc cause the mastering effects compression and eq on it go's very deep and helps make the mpc sound even better
What's the best ssl channel strip plugin for driving the pre amps? I've been using brainwrx off your recommendation but it looks like that's not the case anymore. I've read UAD preamp is great. Thanks
I'm enjoying getting to mixing with Mixbus Pro myself, however I find it's still not ideal to track in. There are some virtual instruments I like to use which cause Mixbus to become virtually unresponsive. Kontakt 7 and Iris seemed to grind it to an unresponsive halt, so I find I'd still need something else to track in even if I then want to export the stems to mix in Mixbus.
if you use mixhead, it has nothing to do with the hardware, not in terms of sound or frequency response. its more of a distraction than anything. you need the actual hardware.
Dre used the 4000G series console …..DBX 160 on drums into a tape machine through the 4000 G and then into another tape machine after that. Also he used the AMX R-16 for his reverb….he had the orange knobbed version of the 4000 G during the chronic 2001 mix. But if you really want Dr. Dres sound….you need to get an MPC 5000 or older. Matter of fact even though he used a 3000 the 5000 has a lot of his sounds in it. On the kick boost hard at 1200-1450 Hz cut between 500 - 700 and boost at 50-200 for his kick sound.
@@vigilantestylez I believe that is correct….honestly I haven’t heard many better albums than Chronic 2001 as far as clarity and bass….i know his G console had the pultec orange EQ’s …..the Japanese version I guess. Of course his mastering engineer was a legend too.
Dre didn’t use MIDI sounds on Chronic 2001….Scott Storch played a lot of the keys in real time on the keyboard itself. He may have used the midi controller for some of the bass but I know the MPC 3000 has a lot of those bass sounds in the programs too. Another interesting fact is that Eminem’s aftermath studio now has the console that Dre use to use….that original 4050E series ssl…..it was originally Micheal Jackson’s.
I think around 1999 Midi controllers and sound modules were quite popular. The Emu Phatt, Alesis stuff, and the Roland JV80 sound modules were the rave. Maybe he had a rack of modules and the midi controller for only that reason perhaps...
@@vigilantestylez probably, I don’t know why I feel like I know exactly what he was doing….i was just a big fan of all that stuff back then and I hear the MPC having the sounds he used in a lot of that album.
How do you like the Fatso? I find it great on synth spreads and choosing the correct frequency to spread out in the Sr. With hard attack and released you can make the entire track hum.
I gotta just tell you something I remember when I was like 19….which was 20 years ago man….but I remember Dre performing on a show…Saturday night live? Late night talk show? I can’t remember but he performed Keep their heads ringing’ live….and he had an instrumental band behind him….they literally were ringing chimes and playing the drums behind him….if you could ever find it, watch it….youll be amazed at the sound. I was infatuated with Dr. Dre after I saw that….it was in 1995-1996 somewhere in there…..I already was into Dre then but after I saw that….it was over for me….then he really beat me over the head when he got Eminem….the greatest sounds ever!
It depends on the string sound but I actually will compress a long drawn out one tone string sound where I won’t compress a shifting up and down tone one…..hey since we are a hang out group….i have a question for anyone with feedback….has anyone ever had any experience with the weiss DB1 MK2? If so, let me know if I should look into it or maybe if you haven’t tried it out….softube has a whole weiss setup for like $600
So true!!!! Good music absolutely died completely in 2005…..and it was very few and far between at that time even…..now all you hear is trap clicking and weak snares and not very good song writing at all….there is no vibe to todays sound….i feel like I’m listening to somebody complain every song about their dumb problems that aren’t problems…..every song sounds the same today….rap has died just like punk rock did years ago….and it can never come back.
@@vektacular Absolutely. 2003 even for me... back then it was impossible to find something that moves me... bands like The Strokes and The Hives started to emerge and they are good, but they don’t move me at all... same with hip hop... and well, of course the music industry went broke, so the wouldn’t have the same quality standards and would make artists finish their tracks faster, not having time to work on the craft. Now, people in the industry recommend artists to release a song on Spotify every week or month... it’s a madness... and today, we are listening the consequences... what’s worse, not even high budget artists are releasing anything good... Don’t want to be negative here, but it’s just what’s happening
I didn't get many responses unfortunately. Mix A barely edged out Mix B. Mix A was the Harrison Mixbus PRO mix with the SSL 9000 J EQ on all channels, and the SSL Native bus compressor in place of the Harrison bus compressor. Mix B was the Metric Halo Channel Strip + UAD Studer on all channels, and UAD ATR-102 on the master bus. 456 tape on channels, 900 tape on master bus. 30 ips on both tape machine emulations.
@@vigilantestylez maybe if the song had some vocals on it it would sway me towards one of them but i really enjoyed them both equally, i really think only you have the answer to this one as it all comes down to taste and personal preferences and how one thinks music should sound like
i like Mix A its sound good, i find Mix B more dark and muffled. i guss it due to my headphones i have AKG k612 pro with sound ID, i dont know but i like mix A
Was hoping for some live instruments - ah well.. Anyways - I highly reccomend this channel strip. It adds analog phatness way, way better than the SPL Iron emulation. Note - the Mid Selector (sweepable frequency) control numbers are actually incorrect (a fault kept from the original console). They start from 140 Hz & upwards.. It also has added 'randomness' - which I may select further down the line..
I'll try to find some multitracks that have live instruments to mix with the MCI plugin. If you have any suggestions on which song to mix, I will do it! Take a look at the Cambridge Multitracks site, and tell me which song you would like me to mix with the MBSI channel! 😊😊😊
Hi, I’ve got a real pro tools session of Serban Ghenea and I can tell you that you’re wrong but your mix style sounds good, the plugins on the master bus are really good to hear bad frequencies from each tracks so he will cut frequencies more then boost, and the plugins in the session are very very simple (some stock plugins)
I agree! However, his assistant John Hanes said they would get sessions with lots of plugins on them, and they would have to remove them, so there is some preprocessing going on. But I think I might have erred when I said that they would have run the tracks through analog gear, they actually don't always. So, there might not always be some hardware involved in the process like I once thought.
@@vigilantestylez they might use the mixhead but it’s not a hardware but I can tell you that some tracks doesn’t have any plugins, he’s mix looks similar to Phil Tan but in a modern way with more stereo image and the way he’s using the low pass filter on the channelstrip3 is incredible man! To wide the stereo image of tracks he’s using a pro tools stock plugin 🔥, the processing of the bass is amazing and so simple man! I’ve tried some mix with his tricks and the result is very amazing! The plugins on the master bus are the game changer 🎉
@@Mixedbyjojo355 I wish I can but I want to let him be a legend because I respect the fact that he’s so discreet 😊, but I can tell you that the way he’s mixing is similar to Phil tan mix, maybe he was his idol 😅 only God knows because Phil tan mix is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 with less stereo image so maybe too old school Serban 😅
I got it from an old remix packs site that doesn't exist anymore. I'm sorry, and I don't have the tracks anymore. I didn't think that site would ever go down.
