I haven’t had Rockcastle but I picked up a bottle of Select Cask Strength. Amazing flavor profile. I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about it.
Msrp $250. 600-700 on secondary. This bottle has showed up in San Diego already at Costco and local liquor stores this week. Gone within 30 mins. Still hunting for one!
This is one of my favorite pours I have. It's opened up really nicely too. The neck pour was good, it's even better now. It's hard to not drink. I wonder how it compares to Batch 2.
It's "just" 5-year MGP bourbon but the folks at Smokeye Hill are doing a bangup job of blending barrels; here's hoping they can keep it up (though I'm not sure what they're doing with the barrels that can't contribute to this profile). Compare this against any other barrel-proof, young MGP and this is clearly in another category. It's not a GTS-killer, but it is solid top-shelf ($70-90) whiskey if you see it in your corner shop.
Reminder. This was up against GTS. Which makes the idea that it would win the Small Batch category let alone the whole contest absurd at best. Let's face it. It's not going to out perform sjr let alone gts.
this wasn't tasted side by side with gts, but out of all of the different judging segments, the judges ranked it higher, but they aren't sipping 30+ whiskeys side by side.

@@BourbonForageFishing They taste hundreds of releases and use a composite scoring system to average the scores, at least to the best of my understanding. They couldn’t possibly taste every bourbon next to every other bourbon.
Was in town for the PGA Championship and my buddy told me about this restaurant / bourbon bar that was just next level. He was right, Watch Hill Proper is simply insane and I fell in love with your spot. Even got a chance to meet Tommy, talk bourbon, and bring him back a sample of a freshly cracked Valhalla Member bottle from Bardstown Bourbon. Anyways, just got a 16 Year Cream of Kentucky tonight and did a search to look for reviews, so happy to find your channel. Just followed so I won’t miss future videos. If you guys ever end up in Versailles, swing by my home bourbon bar for a pour or two. Keep up the great work.
As time has passed since this review do the tasting notes still hold up?. In my area when these landed stores wanted $160 min before tax. Not sure when the 2nd batch comes in but $160+ for a 10 year seems high.
@@TheReal_DeanD The notes do still hold up. Is it worth $160? Probably to some it’s worth the price. That price is partially due to the limited number of bottles so it may not hold up for everyone.

Also that pick is around $260-$280 if you’re lucky to even find it stateside. It’s so rare. if I was around your bar I’d be trying to buy that bottle off you. Again that me for having the open minds and giving Peated Scotch a go.
This was a trip. Thanks you guys for doing this. Honestly the bourbon drinkers by me won’t even get near a Peated scotch not as strong as that Laphroaig. It’s like you guys skipped the amateurs and went to the UFC top 10.

Love dettling i live in AL and have supported them since they started. The high heat in AL is special. Standard 6 grain mashbill. I have that same bottle. Its great. Ive done two charity picks with them. Seth is a whiskey making genius and just incredible dude to know. Very special place.
Love the Dettling Bourbon he does not produce a ton and puts a lot of sweat equity into the bottle! I enjoy smelling the glass after it drys out for the Chocolate smell! Cheers gentleman!!!
I saw many bottles on the shelf just sitting there yesterday. I grabbed one and after a night of pours from the bottle..I have no choice but to go back and grab at least one backup. This is an excellent bottle and belongs on my upper shelf just below a few otherworldly bottles I have (e.g., Jack Daniels Coy Hill, Blanton's SFTB).
