Roger Fry loved Nessa but the jury is out on her feelings for him. He was enormously supportive of her and she admired him greatly as a friend. There is no evidence to suggest that she was in love with Fry.
I often sit by the pond when the house is closed to the public. There is always a strong smell of cow manure from the farm and complete silence. Perfection on a warm day.
Long time fan of your TV work but only recently discovered your wonderful RU-vid offerings. I’m in my 70’s now but while at college (btw I’m a fellow ex student of UEA) I spent a season as a lifeguard in west Penwith . While there I became a fan of the Newlyn school and especially Larmorna Birch, the picture of him , daughter “under arm” standing at a favourite fishing spot is a particular favourite. I was therefore delighted to discover this charming short BFI film featuring Birch himself just as I imagined him. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hye0oxhzmvA.htmlfeature=shared . This film is very much a period piece, as such it has one shocking feature, it makes no mention of any of the then current important female artists based in that part of the world, Elizabeth Stanhope Forbes, Dame Laura Knight, Dod Proctor, Barbara Hepworth to name only a few, if you are looking for a new project ,a film as a companion piece to the old BFI film filling the gap on female artists of the 1940’s would certainly be a interest to me. Anyway here’s hoping BBCFOUR’s funding for new projects returns at some time. Regards
Hey Alison, really hope you come across this at some point! Just read an article on the BBC website; it detailed your achievements, the 4th plinth backlash and the loss of your son. I’m going to watch your program on the 11th, should be interesting. Firstly I’m so sorry for your loss! I really hope you can eventually process this. What you have achieved is truly remarkable! There have been a few people that have provoked a similar feeling inside me for their resilience against adversity - Warwick Davies, Katie Piper. I struggle to accept the reaction the 4th plinth evoked in some people, they clearly are missing something essential inside. Your art is amazing, I would have one on my wall but doubt I could afford it! Keep going, more coloured landscapes please! All the best
Why does it bother me that you tapped it with a bended finger.... I guess I feel that you aren't supposed to physically touch works of art.... please enlighten me if otherwise?
This painting is exquisite, Must have been a generation older than my grandfather Rudolf Haybrook, also a portraitist but later a war artist I definitely feel that Haybrook was probably influenced by work like this
I sense there is in the expression a sense that the sitter is challenging an interlocutor. In this case the latter being the artist. What might she be challenging?
Morning coffee here on the South Puget Sound of Washington State was extraordinarily affirming this morning…..as we tussle with our politics here in the States……Thank You
Beautiful, so good to see you again dear Philip, it's been too long since you've published Art in Isolation. I wish there were more episodes of Fake or Fortune, as well. Thank you & best wishes
Please Please Please continue these capsule moments in time….its the best of Social Media today…..these are appetizers for US to begin our own personal journeys into the Artist’s work……
The younger portrait of the Queen greatly resembles her sister, Margaret. The trust and intimacy with the artist is so plainly evident in the faces of his subjects (mind the pun). Excellent portraits!!
