Did Mikey have empathy towards Nicky’s dire situation? Or at this point does Mikey hold so much disdain for what Nicky had become and feels next to nothing for him? This is the question in my mind.
Never watched Felicity, but this reminds me a bit of the infamous ending of St. Elsewhere, where it was revealed the whole show was a fantasy inside the head of an autistic child. The difference is where St. Elsewhere's ending was more of a deliberate rug-pull joke that wilfully alienated audiences after the show had become formulaic, Felicity's shenanigans seemed to be played far more earnest and straight, as I don't think Abrams has that kind of impulse at all, despite him being a huge part of modern corporate cynicism
That’s really shows that this was not because he was postmodern JJ Abrams always was a time wheeling time dealing asshole will always believe certain things alive. Come alive.😊
Remember seeing the commercials for when I was a kid, but other than that, I don’t really know the show. I was gonna watch it before I had to go back to work when the pandemic was over, but that was about it but hearing you hearing your reviews of me pretty good hope I see you when you see.😊😅😢
Haha, thank you. You were starting Roswell, right? Have you got to the second season yet? The more I think about it, the more I really think Roswell season 2 was perfect.
@@yourcultboyfriend Finished season one. Love it. Fixing to order the second season. Found third season on pawn shop and watched the first episode. They most definitely became more experimental with the camera work.
Would love hearing you talk about films that shaped culture. I do feel like the fabric of reality is barely tickled by film nowdays. I know you're a critic but, do you have any suggestions on how this could be done?
I am surprised you go to the cinema once a year :)) Although it's understandable, considering your thougths on the matter., and the fact you seem to be so fed up with all this sh*t haha. I am trying to go to cinemas as much as I can, despite all the issues with the art form and the industry you've mentioned in this clip. I at least do my best to watch on a big screen any movie I am interested in, especially the genre movies or some smaller intendent flicks. I am lucky enough here in Wroclaw, Poland it's afordable, and I do not have to travel long disnatnces to cinema, like it often happens in States. In my hometown have few different mall multiplexes, few oldschool theaters and one ex multpilex transformed into indeptendent cinema, supported by some European Union grants. They screen a lot of international movies, which you would never seen in a regular cinema. Maybe this is why I have bit more faith in the medium ;) I still find huge value in theatre experiecne, and I truly think there still are decent films out there. Obviously everything youi said in your stream is valid, and I agree with you to some extend. Sooner or later it will crush, and the change will come from the underground. It seems to always work in such cycles. I know, I know it's a such a truism, but I guess it's true. Cheers man!
The irony of these HBO shows is that they can't achieve the best expressions of what is cinematic and are too cinematic to be TV. The worst of both worlds. I hate the Sopranos movie.
I think the preference for more 'cinematic' or 'novelistic' shows comes from seeing TV as an inferior medium, less artistically cohesive than literature, film, theater, etc. That varied structure of conventional TV makes it very postmodern, disruptive of standard ideas of clarity and uniformity. The shows you've covered at length, many of which I have not seen sufficiently except for Veronica Mars, My So-Called Life & Friday Night Lights so I won't comment on in specifics, do have those serial elements but veer closer to the open form of soap operas while the 'prestige' shows can be described closer to extended miniseries if looking for other TV comparisons. In my opinion, there are a very small handful of TV shows that truly succeed in that more focused, HBO-esque model on those terms. The extended cinematic or literary mode I think is hard to pull off, which is why so many shows buckle under the weight of expectations. Thus, the more comforting, grab-bag, yet fragmented form is often the better approach to ensuring more solid TV on the whole, with those few exceptions.
I think these are all great points, wonderfully put. I've always thought that "prestige t.v." and "elevated horror" were meaningless terms mostly used by people who saw those things as inferior to begin with. I even criticized Friday Night Lights in one of my videos for desperately trying to be "prestige" by sacrificing/redressing its more soapy elements. The way you described the varied structure of conventional TV wowed me. Thank you for that.
Couldn't agree more! I like the idea of time constraints. If you can't tell a story in x amount of time, is the story worth telling? Usually not for me anyway!
The idea that film has let down the current generation is an interesting one. I suppose they won’t/don’t think too much about film. I feel that younger people these days talk about the visual mediums on social media like say TikTok the same way you talk about film in your videos. But never talk about film in that way. Which of course is fine. Find the passion and interest and inspiration wherever you can find it. When it comes to the idea that someday Cinefiles will be looked at as weird and cultish. Honestly, I feel like that time is now and already exists. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to an individual's interpretation. lol So yeah, film is probably dead culturally. Ironically, I think television is leaving more of a mark on pop culture than it’s ever done. I say ironically because it’s doing that by being more filmic television is more film used to be. Which is sad for film since film had that sort of power for so long only to then willingly throw it away. It’s also sad for television because like you said television was its own unique, visual, medium. But I don’t know the way I’ve look at when it comes to film. It's first job should be whether or not it entertains me so I personally don’t know if It saddens me that film doesn’t mean much anymore culturally. Though I suppose I use other mediums to find culture relevance? Literature, music at times. Perhaps documentaries over narrative films. As for going to the theatre most of my film viewing my entire life has always just been at home watching it through physical media so the theatre was and has never been like this mystical or spiritual experience to me. Regardless I still go to the theatre and there are still plenty of new movies that come out every year that interest me so I personally can’t say I have a cut off. I suppose the older I’ve gotten I get less excited for blockbusters than I used to. Like honestly even younger me would’ve been interested in watching something like American fiction but at the age I’m at now (26) American fiction is the type of movie that I would be more excited for then say some random action movie. With a few exceptions like the planet of the apes and James Cameron’s avatar series. I waited so long for Avatar 2 and I’m here waiting for the next 3 instalments with baited breath. Back to cultural relevance American fiction discusses things that are culturally relevant but personally that wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t also entertaining. Which it was I loved American fiction.
Omg I loved the interpretation on how you guys talked about the Campbell's tomato soup can. It's such a good résumé of Araki's filmography, an bloody scary tragic beautiful pop art
But the impact of the marvel films it that destroyed film the Blockbuster made media films of the 80s and 90s is made that sort of weird way around 20 times around 2012 with the G.I. Joe movies and the thing they kind of marvel marvel kind of mixed that style together and made these sort of bizarre cart
I have 4 episodes to go on season 1. Found season 3 at a pawn shop yesterday for $5 and bought it. Need to grab season 2 before the watch. Will either be 5 bucks wasted or well spent but was only $5. I can see the difference in characters looks on the covers and it looks like they graduate in the final season.
So glad you're doing this show! It's one of my favorites and perfect for the summer. Question: why do you think there's not an abundance of shows set in college? It seems to me they're not as common as one would think.
I love that you like the show so much! I think it's very good so far. About college teen shows, I go into it around the 31:45 mark. I've talked about it during a lot of other analysis videos when the characters inevitably go away to college. There are a lot of challenges to the college setting.
Same! But it's also about admitting that! Or!! You love Nightmare in a way that's deeper or for different reasons than you did when you were younger. It's mostly about having a dynamic personality. Based on your previous comments, you're definitely good.
So interesting that some people consider Don't Look Now an erotic thriller. Guess the sex scene became the talking point on the era. Especially intimacy in films in general.
I can see where someone would be coming from if they were to argue that that the 80s and 90s craze for erotic thriller could have been used as a way for the audience to explore sexuality vicariously and bicariously in a safe space due to the aids crisis. As for the superhero craze making it cool to be a nerd I’d disagree. I would argue it made it cool for “cool” or mainstream people to be into nerd stuff.
I think you're right. I looked into the aids argument a little bit after the stream ended, and it's almost certainly valid. This was the first time I really engaged with erotic thrillers on this level, and I didn't like the aids interpretation at first, but it definitely makes sense to me now.
10 episodes into the show and loving it. Will watch season 2 after finishing the first one a hundred percent. Sucks to hear ur take on season 3. Should I even give it a try or just end things with the second season?
I'm happy you're loving the first season. I hold season 2 up as a masterpiece. Season 3 is terrible, but I think it's valuable to at least see how bad it got and how quickly it got to that point. It might be the most significant loss of quality I've covered (so far). Whenever I decide to rewatch Roswell, I am absolutely skipping season 3. Definitely give it a shot though! It has some fans out there and you could be one of them.
you completely hit the nail on the head with that comment about it feeling like a season 6. the whole baby storyline was boring to begin with but atleast it made sense but to just wrap it up in one episode in the way they did felt like a slap in the face to the viewers. it’s like suddenly they remembered they have only 2 episodes left after throwing out irrelevant ep after irrelevant ep. so many storylines set into motion in season 2 and none of it got anything in season 3. i wanted them to actually show more of their home planet and kavar etc but they gave us wattered down incomplete storylines noone cared for and yes it actually made me miss alex when they gave us jesse. 😅 it’s like you said it felt so sad and done just dreadful really. even the end was so confusing to me. this show had the biggest potential and they deliberately wanted to fail in season 3. it’s sad to be honest because i’m not even surprised it got cancelled.
I like change, I like person growth, when a piece art doesn't have the same emotional weight I thought it once had upon visiting it that's fine, I keep an open mind & everyday I wait for that next piece art that will change everything.
No, it doesn't. Change means new life experiences and outlooks. Your own personal philosophy can turn super dark, which can be pretty scary. But I believe change is a fundamental part of being a person and that the art you respond to most should reflect that. I was trying hard not to say that personal development means you like "better" films now. It's not like that.
Roswell was always my favorite show. I didn’t really start watching my friends until six. I mean season four but I always used to watch better. I didn’t like Buffy.
i never really feel the need to comment but your channel is really special to me your videos always make me feel so interested and happy because you talk about things in such a grand and passionate way. Even if you talk about things i don‘t know about i still seem to stay interested so that‘s major props to you. Thank you for giving teen oriented things the respect and thought that they deserve. When i found your channel a few years ago i was blown away because noone spoke about dawsons creek like you did and that‘s how i felt about it. I felt so connected to it and all anyone ever talked about was the superficial stuff and made fun of it but you actually saw the truth in it. i like who you are because of the work you do and you deserve to know that keep up the good work!
This comment had brightened my entire month. Thank you so much for saying all that. It means so much to me to know that there are a few people who "get it" and truly understand. Thank you again and again.
i love how much you loved it! some people like it less than season 1 because max and liz were torn apart but i loved it way more than the first season! you also gave me alot more insight into the murder storyline because i didn‘t really care for it mostly bc i didn‘t care for Alex he was just simply useless. But like you said it was more about how everyone felt rather than him or what he gave (nothing lol) liz truly shined in this season and broke free. I love the comedy in season 2 and the little found family of tess kyle and valenti. Wish they had kept that. And i loved isabel alot more too
Season 2 is just incredible! Liz Parker is becoming one of all-time favorite lead characters. I'm so glad that she broke free this season. I don't think they could've achieved that if she and Max were together the whole season. I'm really loving this show right now. And Kyle has totally won me over, too.
i'm so happy that you finally made some video about this show! my teenage years were haunted by Dawson creek, Buffy and Roswell. in some video you told us that the characters we love in our teenage years construct us so much. this is so true: somewhere in the back of my head there are still liz parker, veronica mars, oz, giles and jenifer linley, as some ideals lives, values and colors to show me a way to find meaning. thanks again for your videos! (have you consider to look at the mtv show "daria"?)
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! Roswell is blowing my mind right now and I'm really into it. I feel fortunate to have found a few people like yourself who truly understand what I'm trying to say. And I do really like and appreciate Daria. That might be a good one to analyze, too.
