This is one of the best Shakespeare soliloquies. I find is so interesting how the same words can be made to feel totally different just through their delivery. I've always loved Kenneth Branagh's version of this speech, his 'I hate the Moor' just drips with genuine disgust, whereas McKellen's version is far more venomous.
Another good and interesting listening from Mon. Leslie Howard is Liszt's 2nd piano concerto in A rewritten for solo piano, no orchestra. There are also the several versions of La Campanella and the Transcendental Etudes. Mazeppa was also given another version and the Paganini etude #4 and 5 have 2 versions. In all I can only say I stand in awe of Howard's output and his excellent pianistic ability. In spite of the huge repertoire, never sacrificed art and sincerity for mere sake of cataloguing.
I believe Leslie Howard is the only one among the gifted pianists of this generation who has devoted great effort in cataloguing and recording Liszt's gargantuan piano pieces collection, so many volumes of them ranging from youthful compositions to his ripe old age including the many revisions and versions of his works like this one and the famous Liebstraume in Ab. This for me is beyond ordinary human means. I tip my hat to Le Grand Connoiseur de Liszt Mon. Leslie Howard.
Ever since I heard about the first version of Liszt etudes about 5 years ago I haven't stopped listening to them. They're so much more musical than the more popular second versions!
Amazing Mr. Leslie Howard, devoting a big part of his career on the Lisztian grail, recording Liszt's works from his youth to his old age. I believe this quite to be a challenge for any given pianist to do a whole catalog of one composer's works. Howard's virtuosity (though unsung yet) is quite formidable and his grasp of the music is almost unbelievable considering that there were never any previous recordings by anyone of many of the Liszt works in Howard's catalog. Great artist.
@MrTnatan100 The fourth of Liszts Grandes Etudes de Paganini. Liszt wrote two versions of the etude for the 1838 edition; this is the second, more difficult, one.
I am actually liking this more diffcult version of that Paganini Etude more. I am doing it in light of the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt's birth next year. I am taking a risk by doing it a little bit faster than what Leslie Howard is performing now. I also like the least difficult version of that famous etude since "La Campanella"--the Paganini Etude no. 3, which every Liszt lover adores.....
HAHA Thank you. I was about to say, WHAT?! This is just INCREDIBLE being able to hear somebody with enough skill to perform these 1st and 2nd versions of the etudes. I've seen the sheet music and I was convinced until NOW that they were impossible to play
