it's a carabao, a water buffalo skin, it's dried under the sun for months then cleaned, grilled and boiled with coconut water :D for a long time. I didn't make this, I just found it out from the locals :D
I usually change drivers before these checkpoints because when they see a foreigner driving, their hands automatically extend. Seriously, it happens every now and then, but it's usually a pleasant exchange. Zamboanga might be a little different, too. I have never been because I have been warned against going - NPA... In general, Mindanao is a pretty decent place. I travel from Butuan to Davao and back regularly and get a bit of trouble, but it's mostly good. The "trouble" I find is always at these checkpoints. That said, Filipino police have _always_ been willing to help those genuinely in need.
Buti pa yung kasundaluan natin nagbabantay sa gabi alerto pero yung mga costguard natin sa zamboanga peninsula ang sarap ng tulog nila ang lalaki ng tyan nagpapalubo kain tulog ang ginagawa nila naghihintay ng suhol sa mga muslim na pirata costguard mahiya kayau
They're usually the places that rob you. As a foreigner who drives here, I can tell you for a fact, these checkpoints are where my 2021 4x4 (I just deleted my vehicle type because maybe they're reading this, and I'll get it worse) gets defected and I have to pay an on the spot -bribe- fine. That said, I've found 100% of police will help me or others if something happens - that doesn't make them honest, however.

Usahay mag isip pud ta ug tama, dili kay mamasapano mamamatay tao na tanan tawo didto.
