I have recently been searching for more lower body stability and came across this video. For 60 years I’ve been squeezing my knees together at address. I think because I observed it in someone else. I have been practicing in the living room with the “cowboy” method and I’m in balance on the follow through more often than not. It also seems to decrease tension which I suppose would inhibit a proper turn. So thank you!

I ruined my game being obsessed with forward shaft lean. Which was ironic because before I went down that path I was hitting it really good. I was just obsessed with the look of it. After a full year of terrible swings I just let go of the obsession, and like magic I was connecting with the ball again.

Hi there! You are about the only instructor I’ve heard to approach the lead hand grip from the top. Most teach to grip from the bottom with the last 3 fingers so you can cock the wrist straight up! Would you clear that up for me. Thank you
@TeddyCavachon
@TeddyCavachon 3 месяца назад
The difficulty executing the ‘magic’ move is that the club force is pulling the hands up and towards target which makes it impossible to just let gravity pull them down, which is what occurs at the top if the club head stops completely. The lateral hip shift, independent of the twist of spine and turning the shoulders acts to drop the hands and so does SIDE BENDING of spine. If you try doing just a lateral shift you will find your brain reacts and reflexively creates some side bend to keep you in balance over the feet. Conversely if near the top you just consciously side bend the the trail side to drop the hands and tuck in the arm you will find your hips react reflexively to that change in body mass over the feet by shifting laterally to the target. Regardless of which is done first the other happens reflexively to maintain balance. The difference between lateral hip shift and side bending is that the lateral shift happens once but the amount of side bending can be progressively increased in the downswing all the way to impact and into the finish. I realized it was the key to getting that trail arm into the body and being able to pull the club head on an inside-out path but have that path shallow out through impact with its force vector changing from out past the target line and ball to down the target line. Using baseball analogy, as the club drops lagged with radial deviation in the wrists and rotates down to where the butt end is point at the ball the club head mass vector wants to send it 45° to the right and forward | / of the target line - line you are trying to hit a line drive down the first base line. But what the leverage of that tucked, externally rotated trail arm does is keep the lead arm under control and pinned across the chest where it acts like the primary lever of a Trebuchet with the club shaft the ‘sling’ and the club head mass the ‘rock’ in the sling. The release of the back foot is critical here to get the hips/shoulders/hands moving around the feet in a consistent radius. Side bending tilts shoulders more than pelvis which importantly changes the path the MASS OF LEAD ARM releases on - it’s force vector. Changed the orientation of the lead arm mass by side bending is what changes the club head mass vector from wanting to go off right | / to down the target line. To get the club head mass vector pointing down the target line during impact the mass of the lead arm needs fly off \ | to the left of the the target line and the only way to accomplish that is with SIDE BEND which all great ball strikers have at impact. Because side bending is not part of most golf instruction beginners don’t understand what it is or why it is needed. Instead they are told to “drop and tuck in the elbow” which is very difficult to do if the club force is pulling in the opposite direction direction, why they let it stop dead at the top then try to pull down with the bicep of the trail hand then swing over the top and outside-in due to the lack of side bending. Just teaching a golfer who is swinging like that how to side bend by statically posing them in the same side-bend posture or a tour pro at impact with the ball produces immediate improvement with in their swings because they finally understand where their body needs to move to at impact from the top. Once they add progressive amounts of side bend starting at the top to tuck in the trail arm they start doing the ‘magic’ move of reversing the club head without it stopping with out realizing it.

You are technically tight and dead wrong. To prove it, build yourself a wooden putter with a blade and a square shaft. Then ride the square shaft on a stair step above the ball. Now, the shaft CAN"T turn on the single tilted plane (the step above). What you see however is the putter blade both arcs and rotates. But it is rotating relative to the target not the tilter plane it is riding on. It is always staying perpendicular to that plane. IN FACT YOU DO NOT WANT TO ROTATE IT. The people who make the PUTTING ARC actually sell a clip on the shaft device to show the same thing. This is the part of the stroke that few people understand except touring pros. It is also why ALL touring pros use the big flat topped Super Stoke type of grip. It helps to feel zero rotation to the tilted plane. It is also the real reason for Tiger's marvelous right hand only drill. A new swing plane device is out which shows the same thing. It is always sold out simply because top end golfers know it's value. I also use a "weld a blade to a metal bicycle wheel frame" example to illustrate the same point. The blade can't rotate (because it's welded to the frame) but is appears to the eye to both arc and open and close when you tilt it and move it like a putter. But that rotation is too the target not the tilted plane it rides on. It has to stay perpendicular to the metal frame which has to be tilted by the rules of golf.. Hacks don't understand that the putter shaft cannot get longer during the stroke. It has to ride up and in on the single tilted plane. This why SBST is never used anymore. It is just a constant manipulation which does not repeat. All luck. Now you know why Stan Utley gets $500 an hour to teach putting. BTW - I am a big advocate of Tiger's right hand only drill. Just be sure to go under and not around. It also teaches you to release which is the key to breaking up making putts by timing alone. When you do that practice is a total waste of time. Timing will not be there at first on the next time you practice. Golf course either.

FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! This works in perfect tandem with your breaking down the "magic move" in the prior video. Many teachers have spoken of Mr. Penick's "golden ticket" move in the golf swing. No one else has made it so easy to grasp. As well as your explanation of Harvey's key to the grip. I have never heard ANYONE mention the relation of the forearms to the grip. Until now!! Like everything else involving the great Harvey Penick, simplicity is true genius. Why wouldn't you place your hands on the club exactly as your arms hang down. DUH!! In my opinion, Harvey Penick is the greatest golf instructor of all time. Any instructor employing his marvelous methods deserves top billing as well.

Bryan i have struggled chipping for many years ,my friends always , and you tube pros always say "chip like you putt" that is so bad ... why do they lie like that ? ive tried your method and thats the way you should , it works ! you have to use your right knee lower body and ground , chipping and putting are 2 different shots , and you need to use the the bottom of the chipping club . if you want to chip like you putt it wont work .

this is about a correct as your pants. the only thing you said right was that swingers generally have less injuries. I'm not going to get into the weeds but will give a few examples, Swingers- Fred Couples, VJ, Bobby Jones, Ernie Els, Jonny Miller . Hitters- John Rahm, Tiger, Jack, Lee Trevino Swingers are left side dominant with a softer right hand and a long relaxed swing, Hitters are more right side dominant with a strong use of the right hand with a tighter looking swing. tiger throws upper cuts while VJ throws backhands. Kinda like in frisbee a back hand throw v a forehand throw.

I have a habit of gripping too tightly. I feel the tension just as you described. Once I do get the proper, lighter grip and address the ball, I give the club a little waggle and then blow out my air. I find that this helps keep the tension light for the backswing. It also allows my wrists to easily cock at the top. The mantra I say to myself is, "The lighter the grip, the faster the whip."

Agreed. As a currently ~10 HCP hacker who has been playing since the age of about 13 or 14, so about 40 years, I think I can say that this is what boggles more people than just about anything else. Too tight a grip creates a ripple effect that makes an efficient swing all but impossible. And almost everyone does it. Days when I'm playing my best are days when I have the least amount of tension in my swing. And that all starts with my connection to the club; the grip.

@@booberry6715, I was playing one time and chatting with my playing partner as I addressed the ball. Without thinking I started my backswing, and suddenly thought, "Hey, wait a sec. I forgot my swing thought." Best drive of the day.😁

The left forearm has to rotate clockwise at least 25-45 degrees on the way back depending on your grip. I wish golf instructors would do a better job of explaining this. There is absolutely no way that you can make a backswing and set the club without some left forearm rotation.

I just went to range and did a stronger lead hand grip and almost barely put my right hand on the club and didn’t shank once and I was able to keep the lead wrist flat on the way down without feeling like I was going to lose control of the club. I’m a very dominate trail hand golfer causes me to go over the top the strong lead hand grip feels like it involves my lead arm more in the downs swing.

I only use my left hand to putt now. Got so accustomed to doing the drill that it seems going one handed cuts in half the number of potential moving parts, that being the right wrist, elbow and shoulder. Tennis 🎾 players l, the strong ones at least, only use 1 arm, so I'm thinking why not in putting. I taped 1/2" re bar to my putter making it Uber heavy, allowing the weight to do all of the work. All I have to do is get the putter back and nature takes over doing the rest. Now I make 8 out of 10 balls on a 15 foot putt out on the putting green. After awhile, you start to believe this is the way to do this where the putting stroke is really predictable which spills over into immense confidence you just feel and know that you can make everything in sight.
