Thanks, mine came apart exactly the same way. My ball bearings were broke, I replaced them with a washer I had and put it back together. It still swivels fine and no more popping.
I previously did this a few years back and used this same video as a tutorial to flip the worn washers around. Can't do that anymore since both sides are worn out now so I bought an assortment of washers from harborfreight and they have been working fine so far for the past day. Doubt they will hold up that long. Might have to upgrade to some beefier washers if these wear out too fast. Thanks for the video once again! UPDATE: So these harborfreight washers only lasted a week(if that). The bearing + my weight & chair weight was causing indentations on the washers (which is what seems to be making the popping noise) only after a few days and would eventually give out and start making popping noises again at around a week. So I ordered a kit off ebay and everything is working great so far. I suggest taking your chair washers to homedepot/etc to find some good washers that are the same size. Grade 8 steel is what you should look at I think. 304 & A307 steel isn't as good from what I've read.
This is very helpful, such a simple fix! But this shouldn't be the cause for the clicking sound on a brand new chair, since the washer will also be brand new. In that case I found that spraying WD40 on the pole and letting it seep down into the mechanism fixed it for me - this takes a few minutes, and you'll find the pole doesn't slide up and down as easily for a while, this "stickiness" goes away after 24 hours, you should move the seat up and down several times to help the WD40 spread. Next day my brand new chair was working just as it had first day but the clicking noise was gone! (Sometimes there is also noise form the mechanism attached to underside of the seat which allows the chair to recline, in that case turn the chair upside down and apply WD40 to the joints and leave for 10 minutes or so to let it seep into the mechanism)
How amazing that this video still generates solutions for people :) I just fixed my cracking chair with this. Thank you, my wife/baby in the other room are also thankful. :)
My chair makes loud popping noises that I actually can feel, too. It happens when i sit in it and swivel . It happens no matter the height of the chair is So I tried this, even cleaning the washers and bearings, but it didn’t help. What else could cause this annoying noise?
I honestly can't believe it. I really thought it was some bolt or other thing in the base that needed greasing, but it was the damn ball bearings that were wrong and just greasing those helped the issue.
I've been using this obnoxiously popping desk chair for years and was getting ready to throw it out and replace it, I'm honestly amazed at how well this worked. 30 seconds of work and the popping is gone! Thank you so much!
Absolute legend!!! My chair had the same problem but for some reason I couldn’t find the second washer. I had another plastic one as well inside that was broken and found out the other one was just stuck to the inside with all the grease. Flipped them and now works like a charm! No Noise!
I have been so upset for amazon sending me horrible loud chairs. I went to god sent REDDIT and it sent me here. You saved me another 80 dollars, Why is this not put on the troubleshooting tips! Wfffff THANK YOUUUUU<3
thanks!! my classic Aeron chair was making a loud clunk when i started to recline. Turns out the piston washers were getting stuck in a clump of hair. After flipping the washers and removing the hairball, my chair feels like brand new! Much appreciated!
well shit - that worked. I'll add, though, that my chair didn't have any bearings...it is just a white plastic disc and the washer. Also - it's pretty new and it's always done it since I've had it. So - I don't know why it worked, but it did! Maybe they install the washers upside down by accident sometimes.
This 1 minute tutorial was so damn useful for fixing my office chairs! That noise had stumped me for ages because I was trying to tighten all the bolts and didn't realize there was an assembly below the gas cylinder. Thank you!!
Dude, I know this video is now 5 years and really didn't bring you any good monetary benefits BUT I will let you know that you and your short fix are highly appreciated! thank you very much! . just tried your fix, I also cleaned everything and put new grease on it. the popping is gone. it twists in 360 like hell and its better than new. so a big THANK YOU !!
wow man thank you my chair was driving me nuts and now the popping is completely gone. at some point i guess the washers need to be replaced completely though, depending on the wear and the weight of the user
My chair has been popping for 6 months and it's been driving me (and everyone in the next room) mad. Tried everything, lubricated every moving surface and tightened every bolt. My chair isn't even the same model as this. And yet - 2 minutes following your instructions and the noise is 90% gone. Probably could replace the washers and bearing entirely at some point.
Gotta love todays engineers, they can't make anything work right without failing on the short term. Some harder metal washers and maybe I dont know, a proper bearing would solve this. No money in making solid products that last anymore though. Its all built to fail
Wow, I was struggling for a year and this fix did the trick!! I still don't understand how reversing helps as it looks the same from ether side, simply magic!! Thank you so much!
its because the harder metal bearings wear groves into the washer, then they pop in and out of those grooves under your weight which makes all the noise.
So glad I found this video!!! XChair had the same problem. Has the exact components. 900 mf dollars for a chair and it makes a loud ass clicking noise for the slightest swivel movement. I had to take the white ball bearing ring out of the chair for it to stop making noise.. Absolute crap components for the price!! Probably going to have to waste time finding a new bearing or grease the damn thing every month
This is fantastic, and works for more than just DXracer chairs. I found someone mention this, and popped my herman miller aeron apart to check, and while this is a 6 year old chair, the washers are in infinitely better shape. Flipped them anyway, but if you are having this issue with the DXracer, maybe think about getting some new washers that aren't made from Chinese metalic butter.
