What an incredibly inspirational story. I am enjoying his book about KwaMayi Mayi. A must read for someone who wants to know how Johannesburg started...not just KwaMayi Mayi. Would really love to meet him one day.
I also share an almost similar story of self school readiness preparation. There were no creches during 1978, and at 6 years of age, I was desparate to go to school, and I 😂 prepared myself for school - 1. Trained my short arm's tiny hand to be ale to touch the opposite ear - being able to do that qualified you for school age wise . 2. I studied a book and mastered to read it throughout( grade 2) - not knowing that school starts in grade 1😂. I could read that grade 2 English book from the first page to the last page, reading only. But I was unable to write 😅. I don't know how the self-determination , independence, and family responsibility came from, but it seemed to be the common thing of our generation whereby our families came first when we started working. That has never made us poor. Yes, your progress can delay, but sacrificing for your family always brings a blessing to you. I remember even my father when people called our home his, he would always correct them that in our culture the home you build for your kids is in that father"s parent's honor ( umuzi kababa) , the one called by your name will be built by your children. I feel so sad now when siblings are only self orientated and call helping their families black tax, lafa elihle kakhulu, that behavior contributes to poverty in the communities. Thanks Dr Sithole for inspiring us with your life, onendlebe uzozwa( the one with the ear will hear).
