I'm just a guy who enjoys retro anime and happens to find video editing to be a fun hobby (for some strange reason). I make videos for fun and hopefully some people will enjoy watching them.
Just recently finished watching Gunbuster, and it is all thanks to your video. I absolutely loved it, even considering buying it on blu-ray. I am glad I found your channel. Looking forward to your next video!
It's really such a shame the movie's plot and pacing were done so dirty, because I far FAR prefer the designs of the movie vs the show (especially the character designs, I always hated how Allen and Folken looked in the series, Hitomi's hideous pink dress, etc). Everything is so artfully done from the backgrounds to the action scenes, I especially love the way they were able to convey moody lighting in the cel paintings. The balance between animating both intense gore and soft emotion is chef's kiss. Just sucks so bad that the pacing is DOGWATER. Great example: Hitomi has been on Gaea for basically about a day, she hasn't really been introduced to anyone other than Millerna. She meets Merle right after, who exposition dumps and Hitomi learns about Van for the first time. Then she gets kidnapped, Van goes from being indifferent to immediately springing into action. He even calls her by her name?? I guess we have to assume Millerna told him off screen in the few hours before the kidnapping? The after being saved from falling by Van, she's professing about how much she cares about him and doesn't want him to die??? Girl you just met and he literally threatened to kill you yesterday. Oh and special shoutout to the whiplash I felt when Van tells Hitomi that his brother literally murdered his whole family and is trying to conquer the land... and she's saying how they are so similar because she is depressed. Like, girl......... Contrast that to the excellent slow build up of their relationship over the series (which to be fair I have issues with, way too much faffing about with the Allen obsession love triangle, her and Van's romance should have really started developing after he saves her with CPR/she literally brings him back from the valley of death, instead of the second to last episode, ugh). I would've loved to see not a movie but an OVA series in the same style as the movie, with more of a mix of the movie and show. Keep the rebel pirate group, hot-headed Van, Folken as the main villain, but bring back Hitomi's clairvoyant powers and have the plot revolve around changing fate/destiny instead of whatever tf they were trying to do with the Escaflowne armor as a plot device. It would be interesting to have Hitomi's suicidality stem from her constantly having terrible visions, which makes her want to disappear (and also provides reason to why Folken takes her to Gaea). Aaanyways. Throwing this comment into the ether to whoever is still thinking about this show/movie from 20+ years ago. But it feels good to get that off my chest!
This was my fav anime from childhood this and ninja scroll, golgo13 , fotns, guyver where amazing to me the visuals in Venus wars the music is like a high budget movie
So Americans Playing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, --were re-played in japan, --& those AMERICANS gameplay were copied into MANGA... --Then into ANIME??? (WOW COPYING LIFE AGAIN)😅
It was the first anime I ever saw in 1999 and will forever hold a special place in my heart (even if it was the Fox Kids version) ... and the score is, of course, incredible
One of the first animes I ever watched. Loved it. I remember renting it on VHS from Blockbuster. I'm so old... T_T We need more stories like this! I've basically stopped watching anime because there is so much ick. Isekai is so tired.
I finally got the chance to watch it recently in 2024 and yeah the first thing that came to my mind was 'this is pretty much a DnD session'. They have warrior guy, warrior/mage elf, mage, cleric, rogue, and dwarf fighter. They clearly power up through the episodes too especially Parn, without it really being shown on screen as if they gained levels. Magic has casting time for the most part, and they fight dragons goblins ogres etc... Not that this is a bad thing, modern fantasy anime are almost all isekais with ever more unhinged premises by comparion. Some of them are still good but most are 'wtf is going on here' or give the MC world ending powers by episode 3 which make everything happening later on irrelevant. I thought there was gonna be more episodes and char developpement tho. They speed from one location and to the next fight really fast. Which also sounds DnD like I guess.
If you are interested, ROLW Chronicles of the Heroic Knight might be what you are looking for in terms of more episodes and fleshing out some of the characters. The production quality of the show is not nearly as good as the ROLW OVA, but it does continue the story in a more "faithful" way to the source material (the RPG replays/light novels). Chronicles of the Heroic Knight takes place after episode 8 of the OVA and replaces episodes 9-13.
Whaaaaat avoid the movie? It's amazing, its like an "encore" of the series taking place in a different reality. Nice review but I can't believe you didn't talk about the over the top incredible soundtrack by Yoko Kanno, just legendary.
Yeah, leaving out mention of the soundtrack was a huge oversight lol. I eventually addressed that in a later video if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--dvt8ugUDek.htmlsi=GpJoiRSDiozTqgmy
My first comic com I went to in the late 80's had this anime playing at one of the tables. Was the first anime I bought on vhs. Remained my fave ova after all these decades.
Hello, Does anyone know here where there is official fan contact for Yoshikazu Yasuhiko to ask questions regarding Venus Wars? Been searching high and low and nothing. I am fairly new to the Anime and Manga world so any help would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thank you in advance ❤
I just re-watched Riding Bean a few months ago and I agree with your assessment. The cars, the guns, the action...chef's kiss. And Bean's metahuman antics are just the icing on the cake 😂. 10/10 Would re-watch again and again.
As someone from the same city as the gunsmith cats Sonoda has been a legend in my circle forever. cant wait for the new bean project i backed the day it was announced.
besides these points wich i agree with i could not ever watch it dubbed, much of the natural voice acting is lost and the drama falls flat on its face in how they deliver the lines...Sure there is millions of worse dubs but man it takes me out of the experience. Also i remember this movie was a big deal when it was on its way (got hyped via Newtype and other magazines leading up to the release) and i was pretty happy with the result mostly with the animation and new designs, but as a story the TV.series is the best. One issue with the original VHS or DVD release was it had some issues with dark scenes as most of the details got lost like in that first fight scene...I wonder if the new editions is better? I guess they are
This is so great. Anything to talk about Sonoda's work. The levels of detail he put into every car and gun make me proud to be an American. The painstaking care and attention into every bullet and magazine has never really been replicated. This was clearly done out of love. Unlike film, everything in animation is on purpose. It's not like they don't know everything that's going in front of the camera. Every frame is an actual painting. The sad part of this is that it also applies to all the perverted stuff in the classic Disney films...😕 Great video. Any clues about what you're thinking of next? I watched the Starship Troopers anime not long ago, and my friend turned me on to another mecha anime that takes place in the Votoms world. I forgot the name, but I'll find it later. Keep up the good work! 😃👍
Thank you! I have slowly been tackling Votoms for a while now and editing a script as I make it through. It has been a little daunting if I am honest lol. Might end up being a much longer video than I usually make by the time I get to the end! I am debating between a couple choices for the immediate future, including some well-known stuff like Slayers and Bubblegum Crisis but there are a few more "obscure" anime on the list as well. I did watch the Starship Troopers anime after your recent comment on one of my posts. I feel it's worth a video at some point as well.
@@VansAnime I love Bubblegum Crisis. The fact that it's remained untouched this long is a tragedy. When Hollywood is looking for strong female characters, they could do a lot worse than the Knight Sabers.
@@VansAnime I've heard it's in licensing Hell, where no one is saying who owns it, so that when money starts being spent, they can show up with their hands out. To me, the big advantage is that they aren't "Mary Sue" characters. They have to train, but their suits are intelligent as well. It honestly makes more sense than Battle Angel did, since they really had to rework the anime to give it a happy ending. Boo. I love that it ends on such a dark note.
I just started watching Frieren based on a recommendation from another comment. I have only managed time to get through a couple of episodes as of yet. I am not a big viewer of modern anime, but I am impressed with it so far. I can definitely see how fans of that would enjoy Lodoss and vice versa.
@@VansAnime in that case, I feel like I need to warn you: Frieren is not normal in modern anime. It is by far an anomaly. The manga itself was sort of an accident as the author had a very simple idea, but then during the process the world-building and interwoven nature of the story took over. Frieren is more like a very good fantasy novel told in visual form through the manga. Which was adapted very faithfully. That's the reason for the pacing and narrative focus being very different from what is nowdays typical of anime. It is imo best anime of the decade and worth a watch. And a rewatch or two as it becomes even better with more and more narrative layers and parallels and allusions revealed through flashbacks. Enjoy it :)
@@NexusNoxCS Yeah, I had a feeling stuff of this quality is likely the exception and not the rule these days. I knew by the end of the first episode that it was going to be worth watching. The problem is finding peace and quiet time to sit down and enjoy it - or anything for that matter lol.
Lord dilindal is objectively not good trans masc rep and barely even counts in several ways but I fucking love the messiness of it it’s honestly a bit similar to how I feel about SHODAN as trans fem rep in System shock but she is definitely much better and much easier to draw a real line to.
Good review but IMO stretching out the picture to fill the modern aspect ratio is Bad Idea, it makes everything look wide and wrong. Also surprised you didn't mention the obvious Fantasia/Night on Bald Mountain influence for chicken man and red neck. This was actually my favorite segment because it so heavily invoked that classic segment from Fantasia
The stretching of the picture wasn't something I wanted to do, honestly. The editing software I use (Movavi - as a hobbyist I can't justify ponying up the money for something better just yet) would not load the original rip, and I am too much of a novice to figure out how to fix it. The stretching was the result of my amateur attempt at converting the file to something Movavi would tolerate. So, I agree with you there. You know, now that you say it, the Night on Bald Mountain reference is obvious. But, I honestly hadn't made the connection before! Thanks for pointing that out!
Oh yea bit of a close look at Rally's GT500 and Natasha's 94 Merc "S600" I like how they did animation so correctly on the Shelby, the left-down reverse, shifting speed and movement are spot on, and the body dynamic under hard driving also matches. But that Merc sounds like a V8, not a V12. I think they got an S500/CL500/500SEL for the engine note, but understandable, That V12 is barely making any noises. Aside from that, They got that proper auto box kick down under heavy throttle, much stable dynamic that fit the car's character. Both cars got the right seating position, right human proportion, right color shading and detail on the interior, manual crank window on GT500 vs electric window on Merc.... All of this is from the 90s, And hand-drawn with no CG BS. F-ing Amazing
Just ordered the blu ray collectors edition. Will be the perfect blend in on my shelves next to the Berserk collectors edition and Vampire Hunter d bloodlust collectors edition :)
I look at macross 2 like the Orville of macross. It really wants to be macross...but its not quite there...not bad tho. And i probably got macross 2 for the same reasons you did. What killed macross 2 was macross plus. You CANNOT say 2 is better than plus
I stumbled across that game when it was still in early access and was kind of blown away to see a ROLW game being made this day in age. There is so much to Lodoss outside this OVA to explore if you haven't already. Although, the OVA is still my favorite entry in the franchise.
Still have my VHS tape that I recorded off of the scifi channel! I always masterfully cut out the commercials... Those were indeed magical days. Thanks to my buddy Joe in 8th grade for telling me that it was going to be on over the weekend 😊 RIDE AND CRASH CRASH AND BURN
