Absolutely incendiary performance. Real punk rock in a pub. Just shows how good they were. Proper musicians. Genius.

The Stranglers were miles more professional than the Play in a Day Punks of the time. JJ Brunel's sound influenced Hooky in New order and certainly their prior sound of Joy Division. While Johnny Rotten was doing his Norman Wisdom impressions these older guys were perfecting their craft. I never thought that Punk was anything but moaning apart from the political Clash who I like a lot. Even Paul Weller did not consider the Jam as a Punk Band and neither do I. Punk's dead for a reason - it wasn't very good and not built to last but to be fair I thought Crass and the US Dead Kennedy's were very good compared to the contrived Sex Pistols.

Top 5 punk band for sure. JJ had a really unique bass sound didn't he. Memories of Fred Grainger who knocked the wall out of the basement of the Hope to make space for live gigs. R.I.P. Fred and Jet and Dave.

I loved being a young Stranglers fan, you didn't belong to any one cult, punk, mod, skin, whatever. You wore black before it became fashionable, and the Stranglers were genuinely scary, I know, my mate and I met them backstage, we turned up with a cute bleach blonde who JJ knew, she got a backstage pass on her tit, we helped the roadies untangle cables. But you were definitely in your own gang as a Straglers fan, plus they were 10 years older than us, we'd just left school, and would mention all these books and intellectuals which opened my mind up. Still sound great , and glad they were the first band I was a fan of.

The band also played at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh at about this time. Although they had already charted, I suspect that they were still playing these relatively small gigs due to outstanding commitments.

Canadian bass monster Rob Wright of legendary Victoria B.C. jazzcore outfit NoMeansNo owes a lot to JJ Burnel.. somewhat ironic given NMN were quite a 'PC' type band, in stark contrast to the Stranglers.
