It's just the media fake news crap bullied them during the 90s making them responsible of things they were not responsible of. Same story now days on different topics but same mechanism.
Its crazy to think only 3 years ago I bet those guy were all sitting at home thinking their best days are well behind them, thinking _Man, if we could just get the old band back together again and tour again, play huge festivals again like we did in the 90s !_
