Boy Glen makes this look so easy and effortless. Trust me it’s takes some practice and protective gear like GLASSES. My ears, cheeks and forearms have the scars to prove it. While we were building our home we lived in an apartment complex for about a year. One day I went out into the courtyard to practice a bit and a lady screamed out of her window “what the hell are you doing you racist”! I was dumbfounded. She repeated herself again. Told her I was just practicing before I go to my brother’s farm in Texas. So glad we’ve moved out to the country where we can enjoy PEACE OF MIND without being judged for learning a skill. IDK why I felt compelled to add this tidbit but wondered if anyone else has run into this situation. Also, make sure to ease your horse into this before cracking the whip 😂.
Hello . . . fellow leather worker . . . from an old USNavy sailor that visited your fair land . . . Gold Coast . . . way back a great number of years ago. Just wanted to say thank you for this video on knots . . . the first I knew how to make just never knew the fancy name for it . . . the second one was new to me . . . and I certainly thank you for it. I would just also mention . . . whenever you do a video . . . be sure to look at your background. In this one you had that open door showing the beautiful greenery . . . but the excess light made every thing else very dark. We were able to see what you did . . . but it was pretty hard. Anyway . . . thanks again . . . may God bless . . . Dwight
Thank you Glen it's been 30 years since I made a few whips, now my grandson wants a whip and I needed a quick refresher on the basics. So I thank you for a superb video on whip making, I don't plan on making the whip for him but rather show him how to make his own, your video and my help will allow him to carry forward your skills. Thank you Pete Dando
G'day Glen, a bit late to this video but I am curious about the construction of the first whip, the gig whip I believe you called it... How is the stock made? Is it essentially a longer stockwhip stock? Tohiti cane with a steel lining? I know old coach whips handles used to be made with baleen strips and cane wedges held together with string and pitch before being plaited over, but I can't see that still being used today... The stock and thong connection looks to be the same interlocking keeper deal... Anything special about the thong? DOes it have a plaited belly or just a core? How many strands at the start vs at the point? Is it a regular old fall hitch? Cheers! Franco
One of the most brilliant stockmen i've ever had the honour of meeting and learning from. Hope you're doing well Glen!! Still have all of your writings and ramblings safely in a box from almost 10 years ago. Are you still making your own whips? Would love to purchase one from you if so.
i recently wwnt to see - out back adventure on the gold coast with the light horse dinner and show .. we also stayed at paradise country witch is behind movie world ..they have several lil shows about the Australian out back, 1 show has a bit of whip cracking and i thought it was awesome. i grew up working on farm but only produce and not cattle. anyway i got myself a goot stockwhip and yr vid is the first that came up when i searched out some guidance on how to crack it better ... great vid thank you buddy..
Glen I'm not a horse person but throughly enjoyed you explanation, it suprises me how easy you whip those whips, its takes me a fair effort to crack my stockman whip but I'm sure I must be doing it wrong, thanks again great video
Glen, Good to see ya on youtube. I know of you from reading APWA Journal some years ago now. Enjoyed much of your writing. Keep putting the videos out there. Benjamin Scott
Thank you for showing this. I have tried some things out, but nothing like this. And not with your speed. I will never catch up the speed you have, but I will make some more whips. Now I also know more about how to improve my braiding - again, thanks a lot!
