Hi, and welcome to my channel! My name is Robert and I was an ESL teacher for 30 years in schools, colleges and universities (in Canada, Taiwan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates). I now work as an educational website creator and developer. I designed this channel to supplement my ESL teaching and learning resource sites (see links below) - with the focus on creating tons and tons of Grammar, Vocabulary, and Listening Practice videos that are both practical AND fun to watch. I hope you enjoy it! :)
It originated in ireland.. county meath, it was also celebrated in scotland and wales. It was to say goodbye to the summer. (LIGHT ) and welcome the dark. Winter. At the time people prayed to their ancestors to protect them from the harsh winter.. the lit fires to welcome their dead relatives and dressed up to scare away unwanted troublesome souls.. Halloween is called samhain in irish and the gealic languages.. Christianity outlawed this practice and pit their own celebration on the same date to make sure it would be forgotten abput. The Christian church made sure that the old ways were classed as evil and demonised samhain practiced by celtic pagans.. the original pumpkins were actually turnips thst are found a lot in ireland. But when the irish famine came in the 1800s so many millions of irish went to america and brought samhain traditions with them.. there were no turnips so they then used pumpkins.. trick or treat was also believed to be the souls of dead relatives. And it was believed that lonely and mischievous souls would try and enter a house by playing trick or telling lies.. if found out they were forced away by fire.. amd the real souls and ghosts of the relatives were rewarded with food and love.. ie a treat.. therefore trick or treat.. Halloween has been lost to history as it has become a sales amd consumerism holiday.. Like Christmas. (Yule) Easter (ostra goddess) Happy samhain everyone. Failte from ireland
