There is something I don’t understand in this video. At 00:44 you tell us to align the orientation lines of the compass with the grid lines of the map. But those grid lines are not perfectly aligned to true north but at an angle, the meridian convergence. In the manuals of my 3 compasses, it is always mentioned to align with the meridians. On my Belgian maps I see the value of the meridian convergence varying from 0° up to 2°39’, depending on the coordinates used on the map and its position to the central meridian of the projection. On my map of Snowdonia (1977) I see the mention of the deviation from grid north for the four map corners, varying from 1°34’ to 1°50’ and a declination of 7° west. Here in this video, you speak for the adjustment of the magnetic variation by 2°, but it is not clear to me which declination you mean and use exactly. The angle between the grid and true north or magnetic north. As you explain it here, I understand it as the angle between the meridian and magnetic north. But then you still make the mistake of the difference with grid north. For safety and convenience's sake, I always direct my orientation lines in the compass to the nearest meridian. Am I making a mistake here or am I misunderstanding the explanation?
been a very long time map reading etc. was taken my son out into the the new forest for the first time and you made it easy for an old man like me to get back into it and teach my son. thankyou. hope you are doing well.
What happens when you reach the tree? The correct bearing to the destination has now changed. Ok, you re-address a new bearing using the map and straight edge again. But what if the tree isn't on the map? It surely won't be. This procedure is based on precisely knowing where you are on the map ie. the carpark shown on the map. Would it be better not to choose a tree but navigate to a larger feature along the line of travel at maximum visual distance that is shown on the map?
Hi, i add the waypoints with a description as i plot the route, but they don't show up when following the route. Is this yet another function not supported on an android device?
All these tutorials are great but I find they usually expect you to remember what drawing alignt to what line, instead of building a basic knowledge about how angles work, in order to not remember an algorithm by heart but rebuilding it when necessary :(
What are children taught (or not) nowadays? Works very well when you have no charge in your phone or internet connection. Basically along the Hall and up the Stairs.
Very concise......but if you're aiming at a campsite a km or two away, I would humbly submit that you don't need to get too worried about declination. I do a quick mental "how far off course would I be if I was off by 5 degrees, if that's too far to reliably see a destination, then I get precise)
