This is by far the best instructional video on how to get it done. I just followed all of your steps in this and the other Slate video and was able to get it done with no issues. The only difference is that I have beryl instead of Opal. Anyway, thank you!!
Thank you! Glad it helped! Please be sure to double check that "Block Non-VPN Traffic" is enabled on the Travel Router VPN Dashboard page under "Global Options" as it may not be on by default in the latest firmware! 🙏
@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 Do you know how can i correct this message when trying to set up the Dynamic DNS: The IP address from DDNS domain resolution is not the same as the WAN IP of the device. You need an Internet Public IP address to use Dynamic DNS. If this router is behind NAT, you may need to set up port forwarding on your ISP router. If you have VPN Client enabled, please disabled "Services from GL.iNet Use VPN" in the global options.
In this video you are using a second GLiNet router to run your own VPN which essentially creates a virtual cable back to your house. Since the VPN is running on the router, you can still run an additional VPN on your work device.
im having trouble with the last step it stays on the “the client is starting, please wait” is it because i connected both GL net to the same ethernet router??
Yes, you cannot test the Client from the same Internet connection as the Server. Please use a second Internet connection such as a Phone HotSpot that is not connected to your home Internet.
so i just checked my company laptop which is a windows laptop on the settings and on the privacy and security for the find my device im unable to turn it off because i am not the administrator for the Pc🥺 what can i do?? will they be able to track me still??
It depends on what they are using to track you. If there is no GPS they are likely using your IP Address for location which would be your home. Be sure your phone does not share any accounts with the computer though since it could use your phone to reveal your GPS coordinates
thank you sooooo much by the way u have no idea how big of a help you are. im nervous about leaving the country because my work might find out im using a company laptop but so far ive turned off location services on it but am i gonna be okay? with this trick im doin?
No, if they track you through other methods you also need to resolve those issues. If they are watching you with your webcam they would obviously see you are someplace else.
Thank you for your video! I've been having tons of trouble connecting my firestick to the hotels wifi. Would you recommend to buy the Slate AX rather than the Beryl AX?
The ip does indeed route back home. So i did that part right…. But the speeds are so slow they are basically useless. Should i turn on ddns? I tried lowering mtu. Do i need to lower it on the router at home too? Any other ideas?
Your speeds will be limited to your slowest connection (upload and/or download), the latency between the two locations, and any hardware limits. Feel free to email me your Internet speeds at both locations, the closest major city at each location, and your router choices and I can tell you more. Adjusting MTU is a trick to regain some speed when you have major packet loss, ultimately you want to find out what is causing the packet loss. My email is support@JustinPruett.com
You can use TailScale but it is currently still in Beta. You may want to consider using a Commercial VPN Provider such as WindScribe if your company allows it.
You can only go as fast as your slowest connection or the hardware limitation of the device. What is your upload speed at home and what is your download and upload speed of the remote connection?
I have a question. Lets say I do this and I am physically in England. When my employer looks up my ip address it will show my parents ip address back in the states. So my question is will my parents service provider actually see all the sites I go to or will only the service provider in England see that?
Yes, your traffic would be routed through your parents Internet which may reveal what websites you are visiting (if they have a router with logging) unless you are also using a Work VPN which would likely route traffic through their servers.
I do not offer 1 on 1 setup, but I try to answer every comment and email for free. If you prefer 1 on 1 setup, GLinet has partnered with remotetohome.io/gl-inet-partnership/ to offer that. Ask for Ken. Either way, feel free to ask me your questions or check out the list of common issues here: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Hi! I am stuck on the last thing…enabling the client! It is stuck on "turning on" and when i view the log it says things like "wg down.” Ive gone through the video a few times. Everything seems correct. I cant seem to figure out where i went wrong!
Hi, I have a few common issues listed here: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php but feel free to email me your error log of you would like me to take a look: support@JustinPruett.com A common issue with testing is using the same Internet for both devices, you should use two different Internet connections. Be sure your phone WiFi is not connected to your home if you are using it as a HotSpot because it would be sharing the same Internet instead of a second connection.
This is excellent video! The only thing I found for me with Verizon is, for the port forwarding to work every time, you need to reserve the IP address for router that will be staying at home! Otherwise excellent
Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, every ISP router is different so it cannot be covered in the video. We would need thousands of videos to cover each ISP and Router combination.
There is a coupon that makes the Slate Plus cheaper than the Beryl AX, but without the coupon the Beryl AX is cheaper. The Beryl AX is about twice as fast as the Slate AX so you should really consider it instead: amzn.to/3XPf7PY but to answer your question, yes, any router that supports WireGuard ®️ will work, but if you buy a slow router you will be limited to that speed.
The User Interface is improved, but the process is the same. You can even check a box to insert your DDNS instead of pasting it manually now. I do intend to make an updated video when TailScale is out of beta. For now please reach out with any questions.
Thank you so much! Exactly what I needed. Just arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I'm in a hotel at 2h30am setting up the router for today's morning meeting.
I got the router using it as a repeater, installed Nord VPN on it, and the router is connecting fine to my cell phone and personal laptop. I attempted to connect to my work laptop (which has another VPN on it set up by the employer) it kept saying "Can't connect to this network." I tried resetting the router, but nothing happened. What could be the problem? and how to resolve it? Thanks in advance!
If the VPN is working, then it could be your Employer is blocking the Commercial VPN Service. In that case you will have to run your own VPN which uses your actual Home IP Address: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LXbDg1v65Qs.html
Hi Justin! Thank you for this amazing tutorial! It is the best tutorial of them all, spot on! We need a course on Networking 101. I have a question 🙋♂️. Please excuse me if this is silly. In this video, as far as I understand we have 1. The home router, let’s called that the ISP; 2. The Opal router which connects to 1 via wifi connection and 3. The Travel Router My scenario: I have got all 3 routers; One ISP router; 2. the Flint2 router and 3. the Beryl3000 travel router. Could you/ anybody else please explain if there is any advantage in setting up the 2. Flint2 via Ethernet cable as the “Main Router” instead of connecting it via Wifi to 1. The ISP router? In this way the “2. Flint 2 router” will be my main router at home and the “home Server” and then whenever I am away i can connect the 3. Travel router directly to the home server. Does this work? If I set it up like this ( Flint 2 as main router via ethernet) will my network connection speed improve ? Can other people still use the wifi at the home location? If yes which steps do I have to follow from the video? Is the port forwarding still required? Also, does the scenario with router number 2 connected to router number 1 VIA WIFI, bring enough speed to work remotely (basic tasks.) Thanks a million. I really appreciate if anybody could help me with this. 🎉
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 thx for reply. I already have the MT1300, then if I buy second one (newer) the old model would stay connected at my house and the newer one would “travel” with me right?
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246two Beryl Ax? Is that significantly faster than Beryl/opal? My isp speed is 1.5gbps down and 50mbps upload, am I better off goong with dual Beryls?
Your upload speed is slow, but the Opal is no longer recommended due to its age and firmware. The Beryl AX will give you the latest features at the low price point.
Seems like my router at home TP Link Archer has wireguard support, I will check the speed and report back but Do I go with Slate or Beryl for the travel router?
Hello, are you using a second Internet connection for the Client Travel Router? You cannot test while already connected to the same Internet as the Server. You can also check out a list of common issues or email me here: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
Please make sure your phone is not connected to your Home WiFi because it would share the same Internet as the Server instead of using a second Internet connection.
Great! Be sure to test before leaving and make sure "Block Non-VPN Traffic" is enabled from the VPN Client Global Options since newer versions of the firmware seem to default to off.
If we set up everything like the two videos state (wifi) will using an ethernet cable to run the Internet work? When chosing Ethernet (Wan) setup it is completely different from what you are going over with the wifi. Also the initial video uses the commercial vpn, so do i need to go back and choose the other vpn or if i follow the two videos exactly will it work if my employer doesnt allow commercial vpns? Sorry this tech stuff is over my head. I will totally pay you if you can take a phone call for 20 min to walk me through setting this up! Lol Im not kidding. Employer has the most security known to man.
The videos are two different setups, so you should only follow one video. This video is the two router setup and it is superior because it uses your actual Home IP Address. The Port Forwarding will be different for WiFi and Ethernet since each one has a unique address, please update your Port Forwarding rule to match the Server Travel Router Ethernet IP Address as seen in the dashboard. Please see other common issues here: justinpruett.com/glinet-troubleshoot.php
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 I guess it's just cheap plastic parts. If they had made it out of aluminum this probably would not occur, but plastic is cheaper to produce.
Yes, replies to replies don't work well, I often don't get a notification either. New comments are always best. You can also reach me at support@JustinPruett.com
Thanks, can you explain your setup? If you have standard Internet service you should be able to Port Forward. If you have shared Internet such as 5G, Starlink base plan, or shared Apartment Internet, then you likely won't be able to Port Forward. Some apartment Internet service providers can provide real Internet for an additional fee. Starlink can also provide an IP Address for an additional fee. I am not aware of 5G providers offering this.
@@justinreviewsandrepairs5246 I have done all the port forwarding, I do have a dynamic public IP so i setup ddns and it works all good. I am just wondering, I heard a lot about double Nating and how it can slow down a bit. How can I check if I have a double NAT? Chatgpt says if your vpn server router gets a wan address that looks like a private IP address then you are doing double NAT ing. and there are some suggestions to fix it. I want to confirm if that's correct info. My setup is. ER605 vpn server, which is connected to an ISP provided custom router. I want to be clear everything works amazingly thanks to you. I just want to learn as much as possible and also make it as efficient as possible. Thanks Justin!
The only port that matters is the Public Port 51820 which allows a client to connect to your server. The one in the configuration is random and could even be removed entirely (the entire line, not just the Port number).
Hi Justin, was reading the comments and saw your note about the xfinity router having the same IP as wireguard server. I haven't had any issues without changing the Wireguard VPN server IP Address range for my Flint2 which i have hooked up to my xfinity home router - I haven't had any issues connecting to VPN. Am i missing something here? After I read your new info, I changed the IP on my wireguard server on my flint 2 and re-configured my slate AX client VPN - VPN works well, now the only thing I notice is that my internet speed is faster when i connect to my flint/my slate ax for testing purposes. wanted to hear your thoughts! TIA ◡̈
If you have other people in your household while you are away, their device could be assigned the same IP Address as your WireGuard Travel Router and cause an outage because two devices are trying to use the same address. It sounds like you already corrected it, but here is the video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UTZ-_zxIozQ.html
Thank you! Currently working from Ghana, West Africa! To increase internet speeds should I use an ethernet cable for the travel router or will it be the same speed as the wifi option?
Wired is preferred, it should have lower latency versus WiFi. Africa has been plagued with multiple infrastructure problems recently that have degraded the Internet there. Having a Fiber Optic Internet connection at home and Starlink in Africa might be the best way to improve speeds right now until they repair everything.
