This brings back memories of when I lived in Adelaide. You are better are better crabber than me, I used to just drag the rake around and hope for the best! Still caught plenty doing it that way, so there must be lots of them!
This looks like so much fun, great video!! How do you know which spots to rake though? People tell me you can spot the crabs eyes hovering below the sand, but I can't see that in your video. Are you just raking random spots or is there another technique to it?
Hi rob we went there today and didn’t catch anything. What times should we go? And do we go when the tide is low or high? We don’t have a yak or boat can we walk all the way out?
Hi and Thanks for your question , generally try and take larger crabs / there is a size limit here so small 1's are let go and also let go most Females and only really target the Blue Male Crabs .
Hi Rob, we went to its me again, we went there last sunday, unfortunately, we dont know where to go because we dont have a tinnie, is it possible to get there just by walking? And where is the best place to access the crabbing spot just by walking? Thanks!!
Hi , you need to have a tinny or a yak to go where we are . you can turn right at the start of dirt road and go to the main beach and walk out through the gap in the mangroves, you will see where people go .
Hi Rob, your video about crabbing at Port Gawler was really nice and very informative. We usually go raking crabs at Thompson beach and would really love to try this place sometime. But when we went there to have a look around, all we see are mangroves. Is it the right place at the end of port gawler road? Where there is a sign about the habitat like a little round about?
Hi Thanks , yes but you need to have a tinny or Yak to go out to the Mouth of the river where it is from here you walk out to where the Crabs are . if you look at some of my other vid's , i think of hand the October 1 you will see us launching a tinny and going out . other than that you need to turn right at the junction and go to the main beach and go out through the gap in the mangroves and follow the little channels out crabbing as you go . good luck on your next adventure .
Awesome video Rob! I went there 04/03 , since I don't have boat I had to walk in 500m north, I was my very first time and I cough 16 of them in 2h, from you're video they look huge ! Mines were 11-13cm. Just wondering when they are biggest(month) and how far out you go ? Cheers!
Hi yes when i was little we had to walk from main beach , now having google earth we used to walk up to 3k's from there , wow not anymore as using a tinnie from the river the walk is only now around 800meters . crabs are not as big now since commercial operations as they catch millions -true , so not much gets a chance now to live longer and get bigger , there is some nice size a seeing where i go not much other users get there so i can choose the better size crabs .
I went Thompson beach for crab raking once, and I walked into the weeds area finding 8 legal ones only for 5 hours. maybe next time I should try the weeds-free area, what do you reckon? and by the way, what camera did you use? thanks
Hi Thanks been doing it for a very long time , and it is all in the Eyes , if you study the vids you will see where iam trying to show the Eye Markings in the Sand , so i can see their eyes and know exactly where they are , i have a new vid coming up soon and you should see what i am talking about better , it is not as good as this 1 , but still good .

hi, nice to meet you, before see your video, i thought catch crab only can be done at night, so can you tell me where is the location you catch the crab
Great job mate! I've tried Thompson beach a couple times but couldn't catch much. Think it was the timing... The low tide (0.5 metres or so) was at 1 pm or so and that's when I started. It was mostly dry and had to walk a long way into the 'sea' to find some water to rake. What do you look for before you start? like how many metres the tide is? Also, when do you start? If the lowest tide is at, say, 1 pm, when do you start? Cheers!
We head out around 2 hours before the low tide , tides under .60 , early in the season they are in close and as the tides and weather warms up they head out deeper.
Never heard of catching them like this, not many bait shops have them in NSW, they cost about $2 each when they do. What causes them to float along like that is it the moon, floods, spawning etc
cool video and nice crabbing, good fun! can you offer more details about location and what is the best time to crab of a day there? i wanna give it try on November. thanks!
WOW. I haven't seen nor thought of this type of crabbing in my past 40 years of fishin. I suppose its just a case of finding the right type of sand and weed combo. I do Brisbane through to the North Coast of NSW. Might give it a try sometime. Thanks for posting.
