Looks like a Mike Lindup song, the melody is very moving in high registers and it's working well with Mark's "soft" bass here like a fretless played by fingers
CS From the US here; this is the New Wave Funk that's Under-Rated for it's Innovation and Continuation of US R&B that was beginning to Fade REAL DRUMS, Bass / Guitar playing & Slick Synths that Mirrored Fellow UK Acts, LEVEL 42, Go West, ABC, Living In a Box, before the emergence of JAMIROQUAI, Happy Mondays, & so on; The 1st Single posted here (MISFIT) was one of a Solid if not Perfect Set of Songs from the Debut Album, prior to their follow-up record "GETAHEAD"(1989) a more complete, / Polished Masterpiece, and one of the Best Albums made in any Funk Era in the UK or US / Canada & Overall in Music History; It's also one of the Best that didn't Sell as Many Units as it Should Have like SIMPLY RED, the aforementioned bands, and others would go on to Achieve; When you want to Drop a Bomb on those who are... un-aware, CKTC's "Getahead", any ABC record, GO WEST's "Dancing on the Couch" & so on are the most Powerful Weapons to Blast & Kill the Belief that UK Funk, particularly from the 80's, was Horribly average; Curiosity KTC, and the Great Musicians from this region Prove, w/ o a Doubt, that it's a Myth....
As a huge fan of the material, I'm familiar with most tellings and associated tales... But now that I'm getting around to it, the idea that anyone could have taken this seriously is so preposterous... I mean, don't get me wrong, people are stupid, and I'll believe that any day. But ya know Jesus Christ, whatever technology this reporter is using to get from Princeton to Grovers mill in under two minutes flat, well them aliens sure as shit aren't gunna know what hit em. Hell, damn near a hundred years later and I still can't even imagine it. Like no excuses, there are so many different evident clues in the narrative, people back then wouldn't last a fucking minute in today's world. I suppose we're probably over due for something new. What with AI and all, wouldn't be surprised to see it coming. But it's just sad to see. As a bit of a nut, I enjoy the idea that perhaps there really was something, and the show was the hoax, cuz I mean damn, one way or another it evidently does not take much to fool folk.
I agree with michaelb about Boon! He hit the mark without "splattering" on everyone else or overdoing his notes! Just THE right amount & executed with such subtle finesse at just the right times - shines when his part comes, then humbly goes back into the background to carry on. Essential to the tune but never egotistical - never tries to hog the spotlight ... just does his job & delivers masterfully.
