The movie Papillion and the French penal colonies was not mentioned. Bad imagery for sure. The film killed all likelihood of developing tourism. And the mosquitos. I'd rather take my chances with snakes, jaguars, and spear chucking tribesmen. If anything, these countries, like most of Brazil, are the natural washing machines of mother earth with their thick oxygen producing jungles, filtering rivers, and spawning ecosystems of new species of life. Best to limit development to the coasts where 90% already live and leave the great untamed lands wild except for the careful scientific benefit of mankind elsewhere.
5:45, just a minor correction: the most illegal mining companies in South America are Canadian, French and British companies, they only use Venezuelan and Brazilian workers to do the dirty work.
The Pope divided the world between the Spanish and Portuguese. I’m sure that meant a great deal to the average South American. The idea is so absurd it’s hard to comprehend. As God’s voice on earth I give each of you half the world. Obviously Jesus approves.
I honestly can't understand how you're not already a top tier channel with 100 million subscribers, amazing series. Not only that, but also Tajikistan and Sri Lanka (I'll watch Guatemala next).
Wow it’s almost like communism has been a proven failure everywhere it’s ever been tried. Someone alert the rich brat American college students so they can admit they are making a mistake lol
Wow man: I bow my head! I was born Suriname and have been living in the Netherlands for over 40 years. This is the first time I've come across a video, that genuinely tells the story about this region and it's history. Very well spoken and sincerely made! Looking forward to the video about my home country: Suriname (the country, that gave me the best years of my life). New subscriber here. Kudos and keep up the good work!👍
my mom moved to the states from Guyana right in that 1979-1980 period. Never been there as she has no desire to return there again, but my cousin said it was getting alot better recently and has made me start thinking about visiting. I knew alot but didn't know anywhere near the depth of what you were able to find out and see. when i was young i was never proud of being half guyanese as almost nobody around me knew about it and if they did it was that it was the origin of don't drink the kool-aid. lately i've found myself embracing it more, even though the country has so far to go. but the hope and attention of recent years is drawing me closer and closer
French Guiana is technically Latino and Spanish Guiana is Venezuela and and Portuguese Ghana is the northern bit of Portugal so three out of the Gianna’s are Latino
Very informative but please stop calling SLAVE OWNERS 'planters' unless you have evidence that that actually worked the land alongside the humans they owned
And the history of Gota Rajapaksa is not finished... Now that the NPP won the last presidential elections, he will probably have to face the consequences of his dark behaviour...
Fun fact?: Surinam is most forest-covered country on the planet, while the Netherlands is -together with Iceland- the most deforested country on the planet. No original forests exist and everything there is now, has been planted by humankind. (We do have some prisitine nature; swamps, heathers, tidal sandflats, just no original forests)
I remember learning about the existence of Suriname last year, at the age of sixteen- my teacher mentioned knowing someone from Suriname, and I went “where???”. I actually consider myself pretty familiar with Latin American geography, having had to memorise the names and locations of all the Hispanic countries as part of my Spanish lessons several years in a row, but since Suriname isn’t hispanic (and not so big as to be obvious, like Brazil) we never covered it. It was wild to hear that there was a whole ass country in South America that I hadn’t heard of for the first sixteen years of my life.
@3:28 every black person not influenced by whites, is an undeveloped caveman living like a beast in the wild. This is not a racist statement, it's just an observation.
Boy now I understand why the Eelam Tamils responded the way they responded. Sri Lanka is no civilised country. And Tamils or any human wouldn't want to be pressed to this extent by any authority. RIP. But now these guys won the election and even said SORRY ... Bruhhhhhhhj
Funniest thing is a foriegner doing a documentry of SL diplomatic and political shift just after reading few books and spending a vacation in the country. For any viewers reference, please note, during this time, SL government also launched hunting party perticularly by RP to kill most of politicians who stood against his dictatorship and debited JVP account. This is also the era SL government build in house underworld as a sword to weild against any opposition political power rise. SL government gav AK47's to these gangs and fund them to do their dirty politcal business and killing. Yes, Sri Lanka had a one of the worst histories in the country. Know one knows what really went through during these time for 100% no internet, no social media, people were dead scared to raise a voice for what is right. But this has changed now, people are educated, especially the young bloods. So history is in the past to look back and understand where we are going, do not use the history as your compass.
The video title says what Europeans did to Sri Lanka but the video is about what Sri Lankans did to Sri Lanka 😁 basically reported it like the Europeans came and left silently and never hurt a soul.
Don't spread misinformation, state some based on proper evidence not with Wikipedia rubbish where anyone can write anything where no one is ready to take the accountability
I am a Guyanese of 46% Portuguese (Madeiran) ancestry, 34% west African, 10% Chinese, 10% spanish and 1%british ancestry. My entire family is Chinese, Portuguese, coloured, black and mixed, most are mixed ethnicity. I wish these videos would mention that we are just like Trinidad and are considered part of the west indies. We came to Canada on BWIA (British west Indian airlines out of T&T, and Guyana, along with Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados , the big 4, were the first west Indian territories to start west indies cricket and we have produced some of the best players in the world going back to the mid 20th century and a little before. Under British rule we were truly the land of 6 ethnicities as per our anthem..."land of six people's". After independence most colourdes, Portuguese and Chinese left and now it's mostly dark skin people but we are Guyanese to the bone and I wish all these documentaries would research the history more and include the minorities.
