I do wonder how four lads aged between 17 and 20 came up with such a beautiful, drifty instrumental as this; but I suppose the "grass" they were referring to wasn't in the family Gramineae and didn't require a lawnmower!
This song is like a sculpture. It's minimal and only the necessary parts of the sonic spectrum have been removed. Greg, Duane, Dickey, Jaimoe, Barry, and Butch played only those notes that were necessary. This is a masterpiece.
We were lucky enough to be on earth when James was...what a great time in music history, he was, and is, my favorite voice..of all time..I thank his daughter Lisa, too for allowing us to share her memories...
Glenn Hughes has an exceptional voice really. I don't view this as album as Deep Purple but it's still a 10/10 album. It's great, highly listenable, doesn't seem to age either - when that happens you know it IS good.

Listening to this 41 years later, I now hear that Paul is singing and trying to keep up with his own guitar track. Paul played all the instruments on this about. So, he is singing to his prerecorded guitar work. If Paul was recording with a guitarist it would sound a lot different. The guitar solo is too fast. I don't know what they would have done, a guitarist and singer, working together.
Makes Cream's version look pedestrian. Free was one of those bands where every member was as good it gets. In any other band any one of them would be the star of the show. Kirk's drumming gets overshadowed by the greatness of Rodgers, Koss and Fraser but he's asgood as any drummer of any era.
Heavy rockin stuff from the 70s, jon lord playing an extrem distorted organ, blackmore on metal screaming guitar. Glover and paice put an great dynamic rythm together, gillans voice is on top, he was better every time live til 1973 they disbanded... i still have to say they are the best early metal band better than zep and blacksab... alone if you hear the end of the song, were lord switch off/on his organ and let it roar like a beast, its amazing, cause nobody had done this stuff before, nobody played like blackmore before, the most influncal guitarplayer ever in the 70s.
