Many don't know this, but Tom visited his own dad on his death bed after not seeing him for some years. They, too, hadn't gotten along well. The scene must have been a little difficult for him.

Paul Thomas Anderson is an incredibly talented writer. He’s my favorite current director.

I have always compared TC’s performance in this film to a pitcher throwing a perfect game. The progression of the character. He did something similar in “Born on the 4th…”. but he was raw then and turned into a great actor over the course of that film. Here he was in control of his talent all the way. Worst Oscar snub of all time imo. For whatever reason he has decided to do almost all action films since then but he’s still relatively young and could get back into meaty acting parts for another 20-30 years.

PTA pulled the best performance out of Cruise. His death bed scene with his father was amazing and had me in tears.

Yep the fragile shell of his masculine persona just shatters upon being confronted with his father. Truly remarkable to watch

Tom's acting in that movie blew me away. That scene at his father's bedside is pretty devastating. P.T. Anderson is a brilliant filmmaker.

it's rare for a character to become more relevant as time passes. People like Andrew Tate appear to have based their whole persona on Frank T. J. Mackey.

There was a time when Tom was trying to win an Oscar and this was about his final close attempt and then he quit to make action blockbusters, but the time is right for him now. If he tries with another amazing acting performance, he might get it.

Yeah I disagree with this a lot. It’s arguably more notable or impressive that a director’s “voice”, or style or whatever is recognizable and distinct when it’s NOT coming from a script they wrote. It can also show their range as a filmmaker, whereas with Tarantino for instance, his voice is very clear sometimes to a fault, because it’s VERY obvious what his writing sounds like
