Well, if you take it seriously, you can trace the FEMME FATAL archetype back to Eve in GENESIS. Her, the apple, Adam, temptation, downfall, etc... It's all there if you want it.

Verg informative! Thank you. Just one issue - to tell so much about early jazz but use non-jazz music at a distracting volume ... why? It devalues your total product.

Marlowe is a hero: he makes a mistake (helps a bad guy) then chases the truth - despite what others are doing or whether they care. At the end he corrects the mistake with justice. He may be a loser but he's no fink.

everything he is saying about contemporary film stocks is true and important, but the final result completely fails to do anything he wanted it to do. “wanted it to look worse than movies shot on 35 back then” is absolutely insane considering what he got, there’s NO way he’s satisfied

Even the combination of the ideas in the title and depiction of vampires. The philosophy of evil and fear is probably only philosophy that is comparable to vampires. Even more because they are traditionally depicted as non-humans, evil predators... Definitely disaggree with this view, which has nothing to do with director nor the movie itself

People romanticize vampires but don't understand the curse and sadness that would be walking the earth forever. This movie actually captures that.

You do not need to shoot 16mm to create that look in my opinion. I think you missed 3 steps. You can normally shoot 35mm negative but do not forget about duppositive, dupnegative, final print and this is what should be scanned to have that look, I think.

Counterpoint to the last guy: This movie is horse shit. It does a half assed strip down scene solely to show off Ahnald's muscles. The improvised, overlapping dialogue is more stilted than scripted stuff because the actors have been told to cross over each other's words, but have nothing to work with. The Ernest Hemingway stand in sux. The Nazi from the Blues Brothers sux. I'll put the misogyny down to the era. I have heard about this film for quite a while, and have had it for a while, but finally watched it tonight. It is terrible. I like Altman, I liked Gould in this, I liked catching all the character actors just starting out. Altman is great at giving random characters "business". But this is a bad detective movie, and a bad film. Damn, I'm disappointed.

Sorry but how does a scene from a movie - Mulholland Drive - applies as an example of bad directing and good acting? Bob is a character of the movie as is Diane (Naomi Watts). You showed the audition scene as if it was a real audition. Why? And it felt to me you decided to describe Tarantino's verbosity in a derogaotory way; which I found unnecessary. Tarantino is a master in his craft and his directing is as specific as it can be with his actors. It would be interesting seeing videos of you directing actors. This would be informative.

Also, pardon the stickler, and these are good observations, however, the occurrence of red/white/blue broadly, as a scheme, ultimately comes from Wenders, art director Kate Altman, and costume designer Birgitta Bjerke. It’s also important to note, which may not be overtly apparent to many viewers is that the US was awash in this sort of representation in the early to mid ’80s, most prominently in states like Texas. Believe it or not, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing these schema.

Noting that WINGS OF DESIRE was not shot by the great Robby Müller but rather great old master Henri Alekan is important. Henri was in his 80s and he shot many classics, among them Jean Cocteau’s LA BELLE ET LA BETE. Henri also shot Wenders STATE OF THINGS. Tonally, WOD does not look like any of Robby’s work with Wenders. ALICE (actually in 16mm, btw), KINGS OF THE ROAD, etc., generally have a crisper aesthetic. Alekan’s work is gorgeous and WOD primary filtration was Alekan’s ancient stocking that had belonged to his grandmother, matted by his gaffer.

I loved this video. It’s so hard to convince a DP that beauty isn’t necessarily the answer. If you’re telling a story that doesn’t need that, don’t force it.
@lanolinlight
@lanolinlight 20 дней назад
Pretty is not necessary, but beauty is essential. It's just that many people think "pretty" when they hear "beautiful." Beauty is a vast concept. Beauty in cinema is a product of light and form, not pretty pictures. The "right" light for shepherding the story IS the beautiful light.
