This is a very helpful video. Thank you. Could I ask you a few questions? 1. What brand/model/size hook would you recommend when using 6mm pegged eggs for trout? 2. When I trail a small nymph behind an egg, I frequently foul hook fish. Is that inevitable, or is there a way to minimize such snagging?

Making a simple subject into something complex. Always used liquid flotant from Orvis or home made. Have used thick silicone but they don't get the whole fly.

Whether or not this was a HnD commercial in disguise, I didn't realize that the gel I pretreat my bushy / CDC flies with is weighing them down. Good information, regardless of the brands listed. ☮

Thanks for the video! Do they sell the stretchy "tippett keepers" that go around the spool and may have a little brass eye to feed the tippett thru?! I hope I'm explaining this okay, they'll say 2x 3x 4x etc...

Hmmm... I was down with this until I saw that every product category was topped by the HnD product? Is there any scientific basis for the ratings? What is your methodology for the performance claims? I'm all good that there may be somehting better than Gink or Aquel, etc. out there, but... this seems too biased to the results of the HnD products.

Not promoting HnD, High and Dry, much are you? Each floatant has it's unique balance of ingredients from brand to brand, but desiccant is basically just silica power. There is no variation.

FYI:. The powdered silica is also known as hydrophilic fumed silica. There are associated health risks using this and yes, I use it. Be sure your face is up-wind or in a direction that it won't enter your lungs.

Chap Stick... original in the twist-up tube! Over 50 years I have tried numerous brand-name floatant products, I always come back to Chap Stick! When I was a teenager (a very long time ago) an old timer told me to use Chap Stick. It works as well as any brand-name product and in many cases, it works better. Current price $2.30 for three tubes... a single tube generally lasts me a couple years. I also have several friends who use Vaseline lip therapy in a twist-up tube... 97 cents a tube. Average price of commercial fly floatant... $5 to $8.

These guys at Ascent fly fishing are the best! Go out of your way to buy flies from them, especially on the days they have sales. Check out their website and see how they source their fly manufacturing. It's awesome! They will always give you the right advice for flies giving a particular river and time of year. They may also provide you a beer. Just don't spill it in their streamer box like I did.😂

The idea that trout gorge themselves in anticipation of winter is a common misconception. They don’t hibernate, they’re not bears. Sure their metabolism slows down and they don’t feed as heavily once water temps drop but you can still catch trout all winter long.

Need to bring back your so called fly tying factories from Kenya to the USA and put American Fly tiers to work. But I get it being a Fly tier myself for over 40 years you would not be able to pay living wages hear like you do in Kenya. Overseas fly production put a lot of American tiers and Fly Shops out of business over the past two decades not able to compete with slave wages and production practices we all know would not be tolerated in the USA. America First Made in the USA should be priority then help the rest of the world... JMO

David - while there are still many opportunities for US fly tyers, the vast majority of commercial fly tying has happened outside of the US since the 50's. While many shops don't know where their flies are coming from I know the name of every one of my fly tyers, those of their kids, and who is tying every one of our patterns. We don't adhere to many of the industry standards of success measured by $800 big brand reels in our shop, but instead, measure success by investing in our community and fly tyers. In addition to paying our tyers a living wage, we provide a profit share that is a percentage of all sales, give our tyers 100% of the proceeds (including the cost of goods) of certain benefit products and provide interest-free micro loans to cover health care for them and their dependants. When my kids visit the factories with me they are living and playing in the community with their friends. Success for us is seeing my manager's son receive open-heart surgery when he was young and playing soccer with my kids today. It is seeing kids go to university and law school. There is enough opportunity to go around for both US and foreign tyers. Our fly tyers are family to us and this is just how Ascent chooses to invest its resources. I hope that we get the opportunity to help fill your fly box and be successful on the water this season! Tight Lines: Peter Stitcher - Ascent Fly Fishing Biologist and Owner

@@AscentFlyFishing Thank you for making my point... The march for cheap labor did not happen overnight and I am sure your business model chosen works for you and your community and I respect your decision. I agree with your premise about "industry Standards" does not measure success personally in business circles that have good intentions. You cannot deny the exploitation of foreign labor. The Big Box Hunting and Fishing stores like the ones you are supporting or is supporting your shop with goods, we all know who they are. They flooded the Fly Fishing industry with cheap goods and services on the backs of some of the poorest nations around the world and at the expense of Domestic made products here in the US. Like I said I have been in the Fly fishing and tying scene for a long time and watched a once great industry walk away from the American worker and Sportsman. You need to look quite hard to find fly tying and fly fishing equipment made exclusively here in the USA and have those manufacturers pass on the savings of cheap labor and production costs to there domestic customers. Why is that? I'm not singling your company out, but after all you did copy and paste most of your response from your website talking about how good you treat your workers and how good they are doing in there communities because of your investment. Maybe in the future you can lobby some of the Big World renowned Fly Fishing manufacturers to invest in some of the poorest communities here in the US. Just a thought. America First is the present and the future come on in you are welcomed here too!
