I'm not American but i live in a country that's going more populist and anti-disabled (netherlands). I'm not well off due to my disability and inability to work, and what I've noticed is that other poor people who would benefit from voting for other parties than they do, don't do so because they like to feel like they are still "superior" in some way. I feel it's a desperate bid to feel like you'll be okay someday, because youre "different"

Thank you so much for this! I just started the semester up again as an adjunct, and I found this book while debating on a total career switch. Naturally, I don't have a lot of extra reading time, and so this was extremely helpful. I love my field(s) and the university setting, but I don't think it makes sense to continue. (Although, I do not wish to pursue corporate work. I would love to read a version of this book with an author who pursued trades, or public service careers.) Similarly, I would love to hear perspectives from other first-gen college graduates.

It seems that my local company is offering training and sign on bonuses for new workers and to gain an applicable skill is admirable to me. And definitely it seems first-gen students is the topic of several books. Best to you for the semester.

Correct, patriarchy is one of basic fact of social structure, therefore we can explain many sides of social life by this fact. The question is in public spaces such as bars why men are more demanding (for conversation, intercourse etc) than women in general? We can also answer this question by patriarchal social structure, not being born as boy or girl, but being raised as boy or girl. My question are something else we can add?

No sé cómo tratar a mi identidad blanca.

I am an undergraduate student and I haven't used ChatGPT for an assignment before because I like to have a lot of control over the content and style of the things I produce. I think using ChatGPT would influence my writing/code too much, even if I just used it for inspiration and completely rewrote the assignment afterward. I think it's relatively easy for me not to use ChatGPT because I have some degree of interest in the fields I study, but I can understand why someone would want to use it for an assignment they view as busy or completely uninteresting. My professors generally disallow ChatGPT, and rely on their ability to detect it if it is used. Usually a professor will say something along the lines of being able to "sniff out" AI/plagiarism in writing/code, like how you could tell something was up with the advanced language of the ChatGPT assignment in this video. Some also transparently use AI detection. My humanities courses have used TurnItIn and one of my programming courses has used Perusall, which actually grades using AI. Other professors allow ChatGPT with the assumption that it doesn't work well enough to do the entire assignment for the student, but perhaps this video shows that this perspective is becoming outdated as AI improves. My university offers free premium AI subscriptions to students and its own AI chat environment, with usage stipulated on the syllabus of each class. The IT department seems to encourage AI mostly for daily functioning like organization and suggestions for ways to go about productivity. I think this is potentially a more sustainable use of AI for humans than in an educational context. One of my other concerns with AI in my own work is becoming reliant on it so that I can't explain or apply things I learn in a dynamic situation, like in-person discussions. For this kind of non-academic, productivity-focused usage, I think the lack of a product like a paper/program being produced by the AI makes it less susceptible to becoming an essential tool, and more a way to optionally improve quality of life.

It sounds like a good overview of disability/ableism basics*, though I'd prefer to see more caveating around the social model of disability. I've unfortunately seen people take that very key concept to heart as an end-all be-all rather than what it actually is: a non-exclusive major component of disability. Such people follow up by becoming dismissive about the impacts of pain/impairment/distress and the need for access to medication and medical research. *I call them basics, but I've suffered the impacts of someone in a high position /in disability services/ not understanding these concepts, so I suppose they're not basic for everyone.

It seems the fruit of the Young Hegelians is now the bedrock of the universities. Or at least the pumice and sand. Critical theory, which isn't a theory, is so simple and unteachable high school graduate can do it. Identify an oppressor and the oppressed and you can stop thinking and go looking for microaggressions. It is right now culminating in the end of Enlightenment thinking and generations who lack the ability to think critically - in the classical sense - and reason. They don't learn it in school and they are growing up without the tools for self examination and examining their own doubts. They want to be told what is true since they can't find it themselves. I would not burn any books but I would mark every education book influenced by Dewey with a skull and crossbones and a written warning of where it leads. Any writing based on "critical theory" will go in the fiction section. This is such saddening old Marxist jargon and the end point is the Cultural Revolution and Struggle Sessions in which the mob murders their teachers and parents. Artistically, you can see right now how DEI and critical theory have destroyed popular art forms. For example, movies: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jKHi__DaplU.html Declaring there can be no objectivity is the key to throwing out logic and reason as ways to guide your life. I assume Ebram Kendi read this book and basically paraphrased it to produce his circular arguments and definitions that can not be questioned without revealing yourself as an oppressor. His works are so purely dumb that he had to get it from a source like this. It certainly reflects its time, 1968 and the Communist Internationale has failed but the firebrands trained in Moscow are desperately trying to continue revolutions in the 3rd World countries. Ho Chi Minh North Vietnam, North Korea, Central America, Africa, etc. These ideas have killed more people than is imaginable, most by starvation. Yes, put a Mr. Yuk sticker on the books. Too late for the USA, but maybe others can benefit. Note he manufactures his own certainties "only a revolutionary society can carry out this education in systemic terms.." Now, since he has rejected objectivity he does not have to prove this or justify the belief. And the statement is obviously false. Interesting.

While listening to your review, i remembered the term of Louis Althusser's "the ideological means of the state" . Another concept that I also thought in the sense of oppressor and oppressed is Hegel's "Lord-bondsman dialectic" Thanks for review.

Thanks for the theoretical connections! I don't get around to much philosophy; and also he did not have any sources in the book, come to think of it, to connect to these historical concepts.

Oh yeah definitely makes me relate this to Hegel. And those right after him who used his theories.

Thanks @@DanielleAlcorn-jp7xb ! An application of Hegel to his 1960s Brazilian context and the extremes of inequality within neo-colonial agriculture industry.

Hi, Professor Thompson! (It still makes me twitch to refer to people I know who worked so hard for a Ph.D. by their first name.) I'm so glad that so many different people are deciding to start BookTube channels in 2024. From an oldie content creator to a newbie, welcome aboard! Looking forward to hearing about your bookish passions and recommendations in the upcoming year!

Thanks for your message @NicholasOfAutrecourt I appreciate it, as I know I'm quite different from the usual BookTuber, but I figure, plenty of folks are interested in nonfiction, and I want to share it outside of the classroom. I also appreciate your view on the "Dr." thing, as it's interesting the variety of reactions to the PhD, spanning the entire spectrum. Cheers,

Your description looks good too as I'm very interested to learn more about science and ecology, as an outsider.
