For nearly 4 decades, Thak Ironworks Inc. has produced a wide array of hand forged iron work... incorporating traditional blacksmithing, armouring and sculpting techniques to create a distinctive style of work.
Question Is that bronze (CuSn) or Brass (CuZn)? Because bronze (CuSn) is pretentious to forge (small heat time window) compared to brass . There are bronzes that can't be forged, cold or hot. Why I asked this question, I do experimental archeology for the iron age and while most of the bronze was cast, the type that was forged or hammer modified had the colour close to copper . I am specifically talking about bronze (CuSn) not brass (that's Roman/Greek made).
Beautiful work :D It takes a lot of talent and skill, to take a complex natural shape (prehistoric animal bone skull) and to forge a metal replica that actually looks like the skull, it is amazing. This is art and you are very good. Plus, the "expression" of the ancient skull is well kept :)) In the movie, the whole armor is just fantastic, the way it fits the Kurgan, it is as if the ancient sabre tooth tiger was somehow alive too, in the back of his mind, like it doubled the legend, the warrior. Your helmet is as beautiful as the one in the movie, slightly different, but looks great too and gets the same ghostly, ancient feeling. And it looks indeed better in bronze :))
I know this video is old, but I've been watching a ton of armor videos trying to learn and grasp the craft. Being a Blacksmith bladesmith sheet metal is a whole different animal to form. And I'm very upset that youtube has never recommended a video from you in many months. Keep up the good work!!!!
Hoplites were indeed mobilized citizens in pretty much every city state and kingdom except Sparta but they were extremely valuable as mercenaries, especially in persian empire. They were so effective and reliable that often persian generals put them around them in the center. Even when the Greeks invaded Achaemenid Empire there were thousands of them paid to fight their compatriots and for that they got executed by Alexander. So you can say they were professional as well.
Thak....luv what you do man...my brother and I make art and metal work is a dying art....I appreciate your craft man it is inspiring dude👍 No rules Thanks brother
I was using the gun blueing stuff on my wulfric suit.. MAke sure you wash it off quickly! Boy i left it on a while and it was not pleasant to deal with.
Hey, Rob. I actually did have a question. I'm a writer and I'm writing a story where a character who lives in a medieval setting has to light a forge. I was wondering if there was anything different someone back in the medieval ages would have to do to light a forge than what you were doing in this video (besides using newspaper, of course). Anyway, I thought I'd ask and see if you had any ideas or thoughts about that. Thanks.
I had not heard of any of these movies until watching this. Shortly after seeing this video, I went and watched the 1939 movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I love the design of the mask, like he said, it reminds me of metropolis. I think it would be cool to get a replica mask myself.
Very beautiful work! I love bronze armour. Of course the Iliad describes the armour they wore as polished and shining in the sunlight. Since you do not have hoards of slaves and captives to do the polishing I guess you have to make due. You are an extremely skilled gentleman and being Greek I have a particular partiality for this armour style although I personally coudn't fight my way out of a wet paper bag.
"Hoplon"- Όπλο both in modern greek and ancient greek means the arms and weapons of a soldier. And "Hoplite" - Οπλιτης means the one who carries arms, weapons In modern Greek, we call soldiers like that. Also, a spear in greek is still called a "dory" - δόρυ and a sword still call "xiphos" - ξυφος.
Heya Rob. Been a while. Not that I am not mesmerized by your wizard-like sheet metal work, but I am pleased to see you have not abandoned big steel altogether. Question for you: I note there is a slot along the length of one of your drifts (1m45s). Is there a purpose to this or was this simply the stock you used to forge the drift?
Hey rob. Saw you on the news the other night and knew exactly who they were talking about. Glad to see you did get your own shop and escaped Hammond’s. Congrats. Always wondered.
So I have to say that was a very very interesting way to approach making those Harpoon point finials I feel like I've actually learned something new and it also makes me think that I could maybe do that using lawn mower blades that lawn maintenance companies get rid of by the Box load just hot cut the the larger portion of what is not needed off and then cut down half of that eye and proceed exactly the way you did in forging out the taper and the bevel endpoint of course thank you very much for your video is a very very helpful and I'm still waiting for your favorite bands and you know thoughts and favorites death metal and metal Styles and bands video
Love your work as always. My understanding of the gladiator amour is that there where too balance the fights each armour had its pros and deliberate cons and fighting styles, so to keep the fights entertaining each fighters had different disadvantages to fight against in their own kit and where set against fighters who didn’t have the same disadvantage.
