"There will be no questions accepted addressing lung issues, we bought the time, goll darn you!" Wikipedia should be paid today, as Ed died in '74 of Esophageal cancer, and Dick Stark was available for comment, at that time. The Grand Rapids, MI native died of a heart attack in '86.
Her personal life was so tragic. Alcoholism, being the adult child of one, but she was a survivor. The biggest mistake Mary Richards made is that she didn't know or think it was okay to have a life that didn't involve her co workers. I saw the pilot episode and thought she lived in the whole house. I didn't know at the time that a House can be converted into an apt.
I loved this show. It was killed in the ratings by Little House on the Prairie, I think. CBS didn’t even try moving it to another time slot to give it a chance. I still love the theme song!

I remember watching the show as a first-grader in So. Cal. in 69-70. Haven't heard the opening theme song since then, thanks for bringing back that memory.
Years later of course ABC would get a successful series about people stuck on an island... after trying to kick off a "young people crash on a desert island" series with the unsold pilot "Exiled" (as part of "The Sunday Disney Movie"!).
Today the scene with him in hand cuffs and her in court with a million dollar verdict. Today, certain things can not be done on TV no matter how funny it is and no one is really offended.
