Hobie Adventure and Tandem Island Videos. From extreme sailing to mods and how to guides, I have a massive collection of Hobie Adventure and Tandem Island videos. I am also the sailing Captain for the South East Queensland Hobie Island Club.
I used to have a tandem Island. I always wished I had bought the spinnaker kit, but I was too cheap. I would like to get a Windrider tri. They keep your butt drier.
That was brilliant instructional. I learned from you more in a few minutes than form many sailors in a year. Thank you. BTW I'm not a slow sailor myself, but most of the time I sail in a flat waters.
I do 17kn-20kn on my Hobie 18’ and it looks a whole lot faster than this footage. Leads me to believe the reading in the corner screen wasn’t accurate. Cool video. Love the craft and rigging. I’ll stick to flying the hull half I’m hiking out on over sitting center seat. 👍
Hi Alistair, would you mind letting know what the compass/sounder setup is? It’s a bit hard to see in the video and its exactly what I would like to do. Thanks, Mark
That is awesome! Nice video. I am purchasing a used 2017 Adventure Island Tandem. I’m a novice, but would love to get one of the spinnaker kits. Thanks for the video.
I still say that it's a "gennaker";It's cut like a spinnaker, but it's flown like genoa; There's no pole to help spread the sail out when running downwind... Oh well, as long as it works; Good!
You mentioned the rear AKA bar come out accidently and capsizing your boat. I would have thought the diagonal brace on that bar would prevent that from happening ?
Would have loved to read the advice to absorb it but it's not concise and it flashes away too quickly. Only way to read it is to pause and I pause the whole time. Might you just...... Talk to us?
You could always use a continuous loop for the sheets period for Sheet management since you'll be feeding from one side as you're taking from the other you'll need less line on the deck
Hey Alistair, I see you don't have the suggested Hobie setup for your spinnaker. It looks like you are using Railblaza mounts or something similar for your lines on the akas. Have you had any issues running like that or would you recommend that type of setup. Would you do something different?
Awesome video Alistair! Thank you very much for sharing! I have saved this video to continue to refer to and learn from it. I am sure it will improve my sailing of my TI! I have just stumbled upon your channel and am so glad I did! Thanks again! Subbed! Cheers!
Really enjoying watching your sailing videos and can really sense the exhilaration. I'm planning on buying one of these as an ex-windsurfer itching to get back on the water after almost 10 years.
I have been doing a lot of research on the AI, and always come back to 'pointing ability'. I know in 2015 there were some design chances, hull shape and dagger board, I'm wondering how those changes might have helped? What is the windward tack pointing angles 45/45? With the spinnaker, knowing it is not for windward work, 60/60?
I'm a bit late with my reply, I don't know if you're still looking into it. I own a newer model (2019) tandem island with the new at-the-time seat and pedal system. They're definitely not "pointing" boats. The best you'll get upwind is about 50ish degrees to the wind and I found that favoring speed at those angles was more enjoyable and probably as fast as trying to point to 40-45 degrees, like most multihulls you're better off trying and favor speed to angle.
Jeff A. Not sure if the TI’s already come with it but you can order a bigger rudder from hobie called the sailing rudder, its 39.99 and it has roughly 2x the surface area then the stock rudder
This is a very nice setting. Thank you for sharing. My only question would be why mounting the cleats platform on a track? It seems that mounting it on the actual kayak surface would be more stable, and those are things that you wouldn’t be moving around at all.
I have a Tandem Island myself, down here in Brazil and I have just bought a new Adventure Island. I see you have a wave deflector installed on the bow of your boat. It appears to be a pre 2015 model, I mean an older model of the Adventure Island. I hve heard these wave deflectors are made and sold in Australia. Do you know if they have a model of the wave deflector for the present model of the Adventure Island? Do you have the e-mail or webpage of the shop/manufacturer of these wave deflectors? I have much interest on them.
Our TI’s just need a few more meters of cloth, and then there’s that jib issue! Of course the finer details of shrouds and stays, plus a better battening system come into play.... Oh yeah, did I mention that boom? 😂😂
Alistair, have you considered swapping to a higher performance fiberglass or carbon rudder? I’ve been thinking about using a 30” windsurfing fin, because it is a more efficient foil, should be easier to turn with better response and smoother feedback, plus it should develop a lot more lift.
