Nice review Dave. I've been using this mixer for 6 months now but wanted to watch your review to learn anything I didn't know already (which I did). I use my sends for stereo distortion units which really spices things up :).
It's a zoom h5 that is now discontinued. The new one is really nice though. 32bit recoding. General tip would be to just have fun recording sounds around you. Don't try and record super perfect all the time but rather find interesting sounds and just point and press record :)
8-step techno is always a gamble as it's hard to balance between the hypnotic side (which you want) and the too-repetative side (which you want to avoid). This is how it should be done :)
Thats one hell of an amazing jam. Wonderi g if you made the kick from the field recordings? Ive been having fun mangling and layering field recordings to make kickdrums on this thing.
I got this synth for some months now, and it's probably the most inventive piece of my gear... Soooo organic, and as you perflectly mention : any subtle and smooth touch on knobs makes the sounds evolve like no other synth. you tutorial is just great, and is filling some gaps I had with the understanding of the beast functionning. many thanks!
Nice deep dive, I'm still trying to figure out the 16 step internal sequencer, i feel like the Solar 42 has endless potential. It is really a mini euro rack.
Great tutorial... If you had to choose between the discontinued DB4 and the PX5, which one would you choose? I have a pair of Denon SC5000Ms and a pair of LC6000s. I'm hearing complaints about the Denon X1850 mixer and looking for a better alternative. Someone I know is offering to sell his well kept DB4 for around $450 bucks; although old, it may be a better alternative than the Denon mixer. I ready have the A&H 23c which is an excellent two channel mixer which alternate between my rotary mixers when spinning vinyl.
450 for a DB4? That is by far the best deal you're every going to get for that :). That's crazy cheap. For a mixer as powerful as the db4 it's a no brainer. Between PX4 and db4 I'd always choose db4. Cheers !
U have the first Syntrx not II but myeah, wildly different instruments. The solar is more playable directly from the get go where the Syntrx is more of an experimental sound design pallet using a lot of possibilities with audio feedback loops and what not. The solar 42 is more controlled and better suited for improvisation.
@@Davemech I have Syntrx I and Syntrx II in my studio right now (borrowing the former and own the latter) - I keep eyeballing the Solar 42 though. I don't think I could justify owning both a Syntrx II and a Solar 42, hence my curiosity about how they compare. They do seem quite different, but they seem to be the best modular-in-a-box machines out there right now.
Great video! Ugh, I just noticed that ONLY the AM button on voice 3 is wired incorrectly. Voice 6 is correct as is the FM button on voice 3. Have you figured out a way to correct this without sending it back?
@@Heavycap It's just as in the video. on the 42F, the AM button on Drone 3 is opposite of the rest of the FM/AM buttons on Drones 3/8. Not a huge deal, as not like i'm constantly switching out of AM mode on drone 3 (more a set the patch sound and play with it), but is what it is. It's all the 42Fs for now. Synth is still amazing though even with that production glitch.
Im so glad more of these Solar 42 videos are coming out. Ive pre-ordered one of these myself from Perfect Circuit, and have been going every week to figure it out, and i still haven't been able to tune the 6 drone osillators to a sound i like. So thank you again.
Hey, you first tune voice 1 to VCO A / VCO B, then just work your way up on the keyboard tuning each voice to your desired note and you can get a wonderful effect, its what i did in my latest solar 42 session
That's very helpful, so each osillator knob gets tuned to the vco/a or b and depending if I'm using high pass or low pass signal. I'll try that this weekend. Thanks again

Trying to decide between this and the PX5..... anyone used both?? This mixer is clearly a swiss army knife, seems super dope... but really need an A/B on the analog vs digital sound quality in real scenarios. Also concerned about the hi-resonance analog filters on the PX5 because this will be used by other DJs and giving inexperienced DJs the power to blow up sound systems isn't such a good thing.... ofc brickwall limiters but even so...
When I first saw this instrument half a year ago I was like: woah this looks overwhelming. At second glance, I realised how simple it is once you look at the individual parts. And now I see how deep it’s true potential really is. Amazing.

Very nice, this sounds better and looks like more fun and options than about 90% of all modular racks I've seen and heard. Awesome device if you're into this sorta stuff for sure.

you can connect 4 outputs to the scarlette, wet L/R and then also VCO A/VCO B, now you can put separate effects on either the stereo out and the VCO's.

no BS review, solid. The master filter sounds great. The potential for less experienced DJs to blow up the rig with high resonance is a little concerning, obv brickwall limiters are going to be an essential here. Thoughts on sound quality vs the other A&H mixers?
T’jonge jonge! So I just thought I’d look up your channel if there’s something new. Than came this! How vast! And once again I’m seriously considering to sell my whole Moog Sound Studio 3 + Godfather and order a Solar. I’m also still considering to rather get one or two midi controllers to make my iPad an ambient machine running Drambo. But I feel like I’m going to be spend more time programming Drambo than enjoying to just sit down and create music in a meditative state. And yes: please do make more videos and a live stream running us through your process of using the Solar! Groetjes vanuit Duitsland :)

Well, I designed these drums myself ;). It's an FM synth with 4 parts and a complex sequencer. So you basically can design any type of sound yourself 👍🏻
How are you triggering the sidechain? Are you? Nobody has done a video with midi cc triggered sidechain, which would be helpful for syntakt and digtakt owners who don't have separate outputs for the kick. Wondering how that works since the manual is kind of vague.
That wouldn't be very useful as it would then also compress the kick itself. Especially because there's no seperate output for the kick ;) I'm not using sidechain here. Sidechain compression is not a must. It's a nice effect sometimes but it is not necessary to glue a mix. I make sure the tracks sound as good as possible within the grooveboxes and then boum is just a big cherry on top gently saturating and glueing the mix. if you want a side chain effect you can create those with lfos on the DT and with ST we have the FX block that can be used for that with the amp envelope. Digitakt 2 has a routing menu for the comp so there we can do proper SC comp by having the kick bypass the comp. Hope this helped :) cheers
