We have had 9 Camiras in our family and still have a 87 JE SLE. With the exception of the 83 JB all of our Camiras have been absolutely bullet proof. Awesome cars.
GF had auto wagon with 180k on clock. Was gutless, rusty but reliable for several years. Lots interstate trips. Handled well but build quality was poor-paper thin panels too.
A mechanic was working on one of these cars and found an empty beer bottle between a rear panel and the plastic boot trim. The bottle had been left there by an assembly worker. Someone had also written with a finger 'Shit' or something similar on the inside of the panel with the rust-proofing paint.
I have no idea why RU-vid has lead me here. Maybe it knows that I can remember driving an Camira SL/X one night when they were new and I spent many years working in wreckers yards pulling them apart. They were never going to be a classic, front wheel drive cars were looked down on in Australia but it did win wheels car of the year in the early 80's. From my memory of driving a newish (at the time) one, I quite enjoyed it as it was quiet and smooth, and front wheel drive was something I rarely came across in those times. Cheers
One of my bosses told me that one X-mas party they drained the oil on one to see how fast it would blow up. It was so shi it didn’t start because the lifters couldn’t open the valves far enough to start.
We had one of these, built around the same time late 82, first reg in Feb 83. Needed an engine overhaul when it was just three years old. Lasted 7 years and over 100,000km with us, until it was traded on a new Nissan, the Nissan dealer took pity on us and gave us their best trade in price, then shipped it off somewhere never to be seen again.
I got mine for free @ age 10. Because it was leaking oil. We tightend up the oil filter and it never lost another drop. We ran it on diesel engine oil (grandfather purchased 44 drums of for cheap) the old beast loved to rev. Vacuum gauge dancing like Peter Garrett on fire 😂
Makes me miss my beast JB sl/x when i was 10y.o as a paddock basher. It continued running for over a decade. Did a billion handbrakies, jumps , reverse doughnuts, key ups , mud bog runs thru a swampy spot between two dams in a hilly valley our big 4x4 tractor wouldn't ever get accross in winter. Had to hit the door handle high mud doing at least 80km/h or she wouldnt make it across. I could get it into 3rd doing a burnout. The engine absolutely singing & if i could hold my breath long enough pop both tyres. Lost count of how many welsh plugs popped out. The thing would be glowing red steaming like a train. Let it cool refill and go again. We all had so much fun as kids thrashing that car around 80acres. I could get it upto 120km/h in our longest paddock only if i shifted just rite. Video of it in action on my channel. Crank the sound. It had a custom 3" straight pipe exhaust after all the original bounced off. 😂

The ignition module below the coil often stops them from starting and the hall sensor in the distributer, but mostly the ignition module. I had my SL/E Camira for 41 years, since new, I drove is for 36 years, I had many many problems with it, but I still squeezed 650 thousand kilometers out of it. Everyone told me you can't draw blood from a stone, I said, " Watch me" and I did. and if it had a battery, it would still run to this day. One engine rebuild and one clutch change.
I haven't seen anyone so passionate about their Camira since I was a kid. Its a miracle it goes. I don't think I have seen one on the road for at least 20 years.
