Even though I'm a beginner I like watching this channel. I can follow most of the voice over, or at least I make myself think I do. ;-) Playing yourself is alot harder then watching a strong player play :-) Thanks.
Interesting game. Love the introduction, “this is my new opening, it’s not a very good opening”. Hilarious. Nice example of how to play flexibly and develop from what you have on the board. Thanks.
The opening looks very poor and is effectively a 3 stone handicap. As you are 7d and this opponent is 2k, even this handicap is not enough. Nevertheless, the explanations about why you play moves in the order you do is extremely helpful.
Well, I have to rank up the account and start somewhere lol also ai says it’s only 8-14 points better for my opponent so not at the level of 3 stone handicap I think
To me this opening looks like a fency way of playing handicap game. Not sure thought what would it be the handicap equivalent value (number of stones). Perhaps 2 stones handicap, because your center stones still do have some value (even though corners ( he played komoku not hoshi - more teritory oriented) are more valuable than your center formation.
I think it’s probably 8-14 points better for my opponent depending on where they play. If they play star points it’s probably around 8. More territory oriented it’s probably closer to 14. So I don’t think it’s a good opening but it’s a fun one that I think looks cool lol
the extend at 50:00 was very interesting to see, I thought it might be slow because the stone you threaten to capture was a forcing move so white can ignore it but also when you played it I thought it felt super solid and helped reinforce the top left group in an interesting way.
Haven't watched till the end yet but K17 looks like a mistake to me. The idea of seperating two white's groups is illusion in my opiion because right white group is quite strong. That move rather attacks white group in the bottom left corner only so white should answer by addind a stone in that corener which makes 3 black stones weaker and white has already a pincer on the left side. So K17 looks like self attaking move to me but I'm just a 9 kyu.
separating does a lot of things. It is not directly attacking but keeps both weaker than if they are connected. And white can play the turn to surround in sente, white should have turned much sooner in the game, I think. so, it's giving me more points. taking points away from white. and is giving a way for blacks weak group on the left to connect. So, I don't think it can be too bad of a move.
I like the clarity of thought you displayed when you were discussing your opening moves and the fact that you didn't want to kill the group, just use it's weaknesses to help build influence. Very instructional .
I'll second this comment. The play by play commentary explaining pros/cons/possibilities quickly really helps a beginner rationalize what moves to play.
Yeah I did not really pay enough attention to that they did play p17 I would just have to hane and live in the corner and sacrifice the ones in the center but I still got my wall and would have sente if he captures the stones. I let myself get surrounded and it’s almost always bad unless your already alive.
Would be nice to have further explanation and/or a short lesson/talk on using 'light' stones... this is my big failing as a player - I completely understand in principle the importance of keeping stones light and being prepared to let them go, but it's hard for me to understand when it's appropriate to do so in practice. The two stones that you had early on which you let white peep through and you just gave up them up at 2:25, to my weak mind it feels like the last two moves were wasted, as you plonked down two stones just to let them die the very next moment. Of course I understand that's not at all what you've done, but nonetheless that's the instinct I have feeling it and I can't make much sense of how it's used.
light stones can be pretty complicated. You have to look at more than just the stones but what you got by sacrificing them. I ended up getting a wall facing an area that I wanted to build because I sacrificed those stones. without him taking those stones he could have reduced easier and i would have not gotten such a big area. But if he went to reduce first, then he would not have gotten the bottom area that is also very big. So you kinda just have to compare the two areas that are being traded and count which is bigger. This takes a lot of practice.
I've been watching Dwyrin videos for years now (not consistently, to be fair), and I've watched a few of your videos over the past few weeks, mostly these 16 Rank Up Challenge Videos (I just finished this one), and it seems like you run into all the opponents who go for influence, and Dwyrin runs into all the opponents who go for territory My theory is that Dwyrin can't help but play for influence even when he tries to play for territory, and you can't help but play for territory even when you try to play for influence :D (and I'm probably biased because Dwyrin is always complaining about people undervaluing influence, so I'm bound to be hyperaware when he plays people who go for territory)
I think it’s the openings, I like to go for territory in the opening with a bit to influence, and if I’m taking all the points they tend to go for influence. And I think batts likes to fight a lot more so he wants all the influence he can get lol
@@contrabandgo yeah, your and batt's openings are night and day different in style. Overall though, I find it really interesting to see the commonalities between the more reserved defense Batts favors, especially in his basics games, and the more minimal defense you favor. You're both focusing on keeping your groups strong so that you can attack, but there's a definite difference in how you do that
First song was absolute fire! I usually watch your videos before sleep as they tire myself out quickly and the song was a nice touch to wind down. I prefer commentary but this is interesting too
Hey Contraband, I like that you're trying new things, especially with the new 9 dan challenge I can understand trying to focus and not commenting. Maybe analysing it afterwards could be an answer so we can get the commentary "during the game". Anyways, great content as always
Nah music is nice for us. If there is no commentary, that's a point on muting. Maybe just adding in the title there won't be comment, so people with their own music know to mute ;)
I think you got a bit lucky there. That white group in the middle got to live and then in the end he blundered and you used it to kill him. Regarding the format, I think it's ok for a change if you're having a lazy day, but I definitely prefer your commentary.
The white group was never in danger of dying but if he played right I should have been about 10 points down and after I lived I was ahead the rest of the game. And I make these videos for free pretty much so I don’t think I can have a lazy day.
Was interesting to watch because I had to try to figure out your plan without being told. That being said, it felt ballsy to play away from your center group twice. I thought you were going for an intentional exchange, but then you came back to save it and it felt scary there for a moment. Was this all your intention?
I messed up on the left so I was in a bad position, if I defended, the right would be too big and if I gave the center away I would be behind, so I was forced to try and do both. I don’t think I was in too much trouble of dying but I was worried for a bit lol and after I live there I’m ahead the rest of the game.
Authentic, felt like sitting on the sidelines and watching a live game. Personally, I would love to have a very short reflection at the end. The cursor did most of the talking for you. Felt fresh. The shortness made it easy to watch. Maybe every 5 episodes have a recap or analysis. Like a weekly reflection.
keep it up! i like this new format. the editing was good too -- i like seeing that second or two before you click, where you choose between a few moves.
