This Video show is the culmination of all of the time I have wasted on so many nerdy things. And also a way to get my face and work out there to anyone who might want to hire me for my services in writing/acting.
Honestly I feel like I'm in the got damn middle ground and can't be content anywhere. I see the good and bad of each side. Wait, so was the Anime Club comic a partial parody of this?
If Eltingville were written today, I feel like Bill would have been a twitch streamer or youtuber that would have managed to achieve some success thanks to a huge audience of angry nerdy gatekeepers, but his success would have never reached the heights of a jacksepticeye or pewdiepie
personally im not a nerd myself but i thoroughly enjoyed seeing through a different perspective of the more extreme and vulgar nerd, i love Eltingville alot especially because your not supposed to like the characters but to understand them as people, the toxic groups and mindsets reminding us always that everyone whether its known or not changes, and you can see them slowly opening their true selves when they were adults but started commenting, also awesome reading very nice to listen to!
I did not tune into this video with the expectation of comic dubs, much less an entire dub of an entire (and very important) comic in the series. This was very educational and very entertaining. I think I learned more about _The Eltingville Club_ from this video than most people know. Thank you very much for going to all this trouble - it was worth it!
When I first watched the Eltingville pilot (I think around 2013), I mostly identified with Bill. But with how I am now, I think I'm most like Jerry. "Dude, I don't hold grudges. Never did, not even back then." That is me in a nutshell. Or I'm a very fucked up mix of Bill and Jerry.
Oh man I just heard of this franchise today! I’m so impressed that they would go a dark route in the comic! Oof. I don’t think this would be as fun as Big Bang Theory. But since it’s starting to get talked about, and the whole theme ages like wine, maybe there’s a chance of a revival? Whether it be comic or a possible new series
1:08:19 [If I could add anything to that ending] Jerry: "I invited you over because I thought we could make PEACE! I thought we could move past our bullshit and be NORMAL FUCKING FRIENDS for once! But I guess that was asking for to much! Your always just going to be a bitter, angry, asshole! Well I'm fucking done with you! In fact I'm done with ALL OF YOU!!!!"
It kinda reminds me of Ego from Ratatouille, where he was told he hated food, but he loves it. He loves food SO much that he’ll criticize anyone that doesn’t hold measure to his ideal of food. It’s the same thing for nerdom, where we love our things that give us joy and fun SO much that we hate anything that doesn’t reach that impossibly high bar that is set in each of our minds.
Thank you for the dramatic readings that made my day! I love the audio effects like the megaphone THAT was great! You honestly have a knack for this, hope you do more. I remember enjoying this pilot when it first aired on Adult Swim back in the day, and every so often a RU-vid video like this reminds me that it was a comic. I didn't know that he was still doing this comic during the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This comic went really over the top and extreme more than I could have imagined, but a good cautionary tale for sure. Fantastic video man!
Nerd culture is weird. Me and my buddy were just talking about how the prequel trilogy of SW was hated on a bit too much. That sort of indirectly caused the debacle we have now with Disney. Toxic fans influenced Lucas' decision to sell the franchise. So now we get terrible movies and shows lol. People should think about how their actions might effect things greater than themselves more. This comic shows that in spades. The boys getting into petty fights caused their friend group to break up, the destruction of all nerds' oasis(the FLGS) and it was all over stupid petty crap...
I feel like it may be important to note, that in the comic where bill becomes the store "owner" theres a "fake nerd girl" who enters the store. Bill said she actually seemed kind of cute, and that she couldn't be a fake nerd because she was wearing a harlequin shirt. Joe said that that was apart of her plan to get attention from them. I wonder if Joe never said this, would Bill have acted the same way as he did in the epilogue? And I feel like, in a way, that that interaction is proof that hate is learned. This series is so peak bro omg
Jesus H Christ I didnt think it would just....get crazy and depressing that quick lmfaooooo I saw the Pilot and wanted to know more about it and also tried to find physical comics. I stumbled upon this video funnily enough and wow... Dorkin is a really good writer Makes me realize I was almost a Bill at one point when I was growing up, but then I saw firsthand on what you end up being and it definitely scared me. I had family (mostly my two older brothers) to tell me to eventually grow up and you'll grow out of the nerd stuff eventually, just like them I've come to realize that I read manga and comics, build Gunpla and collect action figures and collect games because I really enjoy it, and I'm a fan of it. I couldn't do it when I was younger cause I wasn't born wealthy and my strict hispanic mom wouldn't want me spending stuff on stupid crap from what she tells me. I buy stuff cause I couldn't get it when I was younger, but I'm a fan of said product and want to support it and/or talk about it with other fellow friends. I want to be a Jerry, not a Bill. I don't want to end up being a full blown asshole. This video was so amazing. I finally got to know alot more about this comic.
It's such a shame Welcome to Eltingville never got past the pilot. Dorkin had such a knack for adapting the comic and expanding on the cast, as well as diluting the rancid toxicity of the main four without losing what made them who they were (not to mention the stupendous voice acting). Even tho they were still belligerent know-it-alls there was something there that almost felt like the show's ending might have been less miserable for some of them.
Yeah the eltingville stuff is more intense than 3 geeks, adventures of arron, and the big bang theory i remember a dan clowes interview in the comics journal where it was gary groth i think said you had to totally immerse yourself in something to take it apart also i remember the intervention storyline, hysterical......
Whilst DC has a very clearly defined trio in Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, Marvel I have always considered to have 3 different sets of BIG 3. 1: The Leaders of the World; Captain America, Iron Man and Thor 2: The Popular Characters; Spider-Man, Hulk and Wolverine 3: The Big Teams: Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four
U know josh saying that "conquering virus until i am in position to establish my so called shitty fan fiction as canon" That is modern entertainment these days....especially with comics and movies these days.
A fandom that I had sort of an Eltingville experience it was Super Smash Bros, you would get torn to SHREDS which character you played, didn't matter if they were OP or low tier characters it was just any and people would tell you to kys, and don't get me started on the Smash Character Ballet, everytime it was mentioned all hell broke lose and if people didn't get the Characters they wanted people started pointing fingers
When Bill was too narcissistic, even Josh, supposedly the most arrogant one in the group, walked away with Jerry. That's when you knew how messed up he was.
100% agree with you as a female fan of shows, movies etc. I grew up loving, not going to deny, I personally find these IPs less desirable now. Shells of their former selves if you will. The constant dwelling on negativity and obsessively putting energy into something I despise by talking about it got draining. It really dawned on me after 2016 when with 3rd wave feminism taking over comics and the "male dominated" corners of entertainment. Anti-feminists becoming just as bad as those they are criticizing. Nerdrotic is a GREAT example which I can't help but think you referenced when you said, "Star Wars is dead." Don't like something? Create something better then. That's my motto. I loved this comic. Shame I never got to see it in TV form when it aired. Had I written it, I wouldn't have just made Jerry be the voice of reason, but a budding comic book creator. "I agree, I think all the new stuff sucks, that's why I saved up to create my own media business which I'm going to be launching next year." I like that he reverts back somewhat to his terrible self without 100% losing who he is now. All the characters have their own flaws, but I liked seeing how the boys developed as men. I knew Josh was going to be my favorite from the get-go, and as a Latina gravitating toward Pete the Latin (Italiano?) and also enjoy horror and other things he likes. How they all ended up as adults was great. I can see why this had the fanfare as much as it did. I want to watch the whole TV series now. I got a kick out of kid but especially adult Bill. I never had any male dominated sphere make me feel uncomfortable like what Bill did to Mandi. I seriously would bust up laughing in that face of whoever is saying all of that "offensive" spiel if that ever did happen to me in real life.😂
I actually got around the ring this comic last year and it was one insane ride, a great one at that. Honestly Jerry is living his best life when he wasn't with them anymore.
Jfc i cant believe i just wasted over an hour of my time watching this for you to start complaining about “wokeness” and race-swapping. How can you spend all this time making a video about how awful nerds are who take things too seriously and feel like they own pop culture, then to end it by being part of it. The lack of self awareness is hilarious.
….. I mean it’s definitely in theme. The hatred of women is literally in comic. If you don’t like something don’t watch it screaming about it’s wokeness constantly is the behavior people would have in this comic
I love the little hints we get from Mandi. I recognize them as someone with a partner who helped me with mental health stuff and overall life improvement. She's immediately wary of Bill meaning clearly Jerry has told plenty of stories of Bill being the worst one and she's so concerned Jerry has to say its alright several times. She stands up to Bill for herself and Jerry, so he doesn't make excuses, taking Bill's sexist nonsense and letting him reveal himself. But she is also honest with Jerry that what Bill said was hurtful even if she's ok. When sh*t starts going down she tries to calm Jerry with exercises they either learned together or that Jerry shared with her so she could help him practice. Then she gets one of the funniest lines with "Oh Jerry, your sh*tty little friend is dead." We love a Mandi.
I had some friends back in high school who were like the turkey's in the Eltingville club (though not as bat shit insane). I think if this show were to come back on Adult Swim with some updated references it would do insanely well.
Marvel has two trinities the avengers trinity which consists of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor however the Marvel Trinity consists of Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Hulk
Really like how they stuck to the nerd stereotype as hard as possible but made bill look really good out of the rest of the characters, it makes him alot more terrifying and akin to something like a serial killer, he is undoubtedly the worst and deserved every beat down. but you have to feel some sort of sympathy because he was also neglected the most, i really think this comic needs a true show someday because it stands the test of time and alot more stories can fill the gaps.
Pulling a milk toast fence sitter or "Both sides-ism" I see. While I do agree moving on should be a tactic in any hobby that has been tainted; the narcissistic activists and corporate goons have affected every aspect of geek/nerd culture (including gaming, comics, animation, tabletop, anime localization and even action figure collecting) has become more then blatant at this point. When you have the corporate press (the enemy of the people) continuously making deceptive hit pieces of anybody giving the most minor criticism it is transparent who the real bad guys are. Even when people create their own comics, universes or games the same corporate press continues to attack with every ist, ism or phobe. I tried to tacit of "I don't like the new series but I'll still enjoy the old show" just to get blocked, banned, harassed or kicked out of groups for again giving minor criticism so that said group could keep their corporate connections. While I do agree there is still drama and bad faith actors in the in "Fandom Menace" (lack of a better term), there is clearly one side that is being far more antagonistic with corporations backing them (until recently). The beginning of the Eltingville Club was well intended and giving warning of pop culture obsession however fandoms have become a multi layered debate that I'm not sure can recover.
