I decided to start this channel after watching many woodworkers on RU-vid for several years. I love what they do and thought I could do something like that too. The thing is, I am a full time U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer so my time is limited. At this point, I can't promise to upload a new video every week but I will do my best to come up with something to post.
Tools are expensive so I like to try to make them myself. I guess you could call me a woodworking DIY junky.
As with any power tool, not just the ones you make, safety is very important. If you don't know what you are doing with a tool, do a little research or get some training before you attempt anything. These videos are meant for entertainment purposes and hopefully will inspire you to get into your shop and create something as well.
I just finished building your gate. It was very simplistic and looks nice. It took me an hour, start ro finish. I used the prefab styles and new scrap deck board.
I built a very similar crusher after watching your video, but because of some mysterious reason my cans while being flattened get pushed out infront, not getting completely flattened
@@RPGWoodworking Yes, I think it is an issue with the foot. I made it with an pivot to the handle, thought it might keep it "more straight". In fact it actually pivots back while pressing down, due to the tolerances in the build, and thus ejects the can. I will try to solve it with some guides maybe, if not just go direct, like in the video.
Just wanted to say thanks...I did this except I cut it to length and then melted the end using a heat gun to close the opening and used a angle grinder to cut a square slot for the new opening
there is a link in the video description that will take you the plans where you can download them. the plans say to use 1/4-20 bolts but that is a mistake. use 3/8-16 instead. they are much stronger. if you build it, i'd love to see pictures. cheers!

there is a link in the video description where you can download the plans for free. also, there is a mistake in those plans. where it says to use a 1/4-20 hex bolt, it should say 3/8-16 hex bolt. 3/8-16 is much beefier. cheers!
Thanks for the good video and the plans. Very helpful. I made this for our son and it worked great. But, top handle pivot block takes the brunt of the upward force as the lever is pressed downward and it soon split. It was made from pine and was too soft. I recommend increasing the diameter of the through bolt and using hard maple for the pivot block and adding washers on all sides. Also helpful to glue or screw put a piece of hard board at the bottom of the crusher where it meets the top of the can to extend its life.
A thumbs down to you for not checking out the video description for the link to the guy who did it originally so you can get the plans for free. I'm just a small channel who likes to share stuff, not a huge "influencer" who makes a living doing this. The next time you decide to $#!t on someone's video, make sure you have more than 7 videos of your own to back it up. But thank you for your comment. I'm sure there are loads of people out there that will appreciate your ignorance. Cheers!
I made a great big size one that allows me to flatten quite nicely them tall fat boy 32 oncers and aluminum bottles. If you can smash them up and I mean really smash 'em! then you pretty much have a REAL can crusher.
Would love a copy of those plans! I have been looking everywhere for a simple can crusher design. Reminds me of my childhood ❤ Thank you for posting this 😊

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy. Yes, I made it from his plans several years ago and it still runs like a champ. I made a couple of changes though such as making the upper wheel cover on a hinge for easier access and changed the design of the wheel crowns so dust can't collect under the tire.
I'm sorry you feel that way but not everyone's income is enough to overcome their self pride. Besides, not everything at HF is "cheap." And if HF gets someone started in woodworking and AT LEAST gets them by until they can afford something better, what is the harm? At least they are doing something they love to do and aren't taking food off the table. The whole point of this video was to try to get folks to think outside the box and improve on what they already have. Like my old shop teacher used to say, "If you ain't got it, make it!"
Great tutorial! I've really been wanting to build a can crusher for a long time. Only thing is i really wish you had showed the crusher arm assembly. Is there anyway you can make a video of it? Maybe in an updated one? Id really like to see how it was made
thanks! i really appreciate the kind words and constructive criticism. unfortunately, i have just retired from the Navy and am in the process of selling my house and moving out of state so i don't have a shop to work out of right now. hopefully soon though...cheers!
I'd like to scale this up to where it could crush 1 and 2 liter PETE plastic beverage bottles and gallon plastic milk jugs. Only issue is that the bottom plate would have to be steel, so that the neck of the bottle can poke through enough for the user to put the cap back on (otherwise, the bottle just expands again).
Liked this video very much but I had seen other videos on can crushing where they recommend crushing the can upside down so the air inside can escape. If I were build one of these, I would drill a hole in the bottom of the base for that purpose and see if it isn't easier; i.e. takes less effort to crush a can.
When you say 1” by 4” do you really mean 3/4” by 3-1/2” Also the pivot arms say 70 degrees and in your video you say it’s 20 degrees, I’m only asking because I built mine to the exact specs to your drawing and it didn’t really come out right.
yes, 1x4 is widely understood to be 3/4 x 3 1/2. i did say in the video 20 degrees but the plans show 70 degrees. either way, it is a 70 degree angle from zero or a 20 degree angle from 90. i'm sorry if that was unclear.
It's not really heavy duty but could be more with screws. People can say whatever but I've built a ton of stuff with plywood that's super sturdy. Not near as heavy. I like it. Way less weight . Nice little sturdy bench
that's a wicked build Randy mate.. Watching here in Ireland.. U got skills man. I'm trying to do a job on my cheap ass Table saw. It's a decent saw but the top is shit. That's the truth. The top isn't level at all so I want to put ,my own top on it from good 18mm Plywood. Do u have any advice for me bro? The saw has these little trunions that the blade housing sit into on which were connected to the old Table top. They look tricky to connect back up. My saw's blade housing has this weird top bit which means the blade can still cut u when it's fully retracted. I wanna change that which means I will lose maybe 5-8mm from the 80mm height but I don't care about that. I wanna be able to be safe as heck without worrying about my hand hitting a blades that aint completely hidden. This was a great Pocket hole jig build. Those machines look awesome anyways so for u to build one of ur own means u are pretty decent at this woodworking game bro..Salute to u and best wishes with Grandchild #2.. Happy New year to u all there
i did a series on pimping out a cheap table saw about 5 years ago (has it been that long?!?). i think it's the first 3 (or 4) videos i ever did so the quality is for shit but it might give you some ideas. good luck mate! cheers!
Hey Randy.. Love the saw but I wanted to see how u built the fence too bro.. U gotta do a proper video on all that stuff too man.. Don't gloss over anything.. Great job though man
