I would say they probably break down twice as much as normal ones but if it's made in Germany it probably never breaks and is a fortune of something does
So to use it, you have to intentionally step right where the big red sign explicitly tells you not to stand? What a dumb, unsafe, irresponsible design.

This is just AN elevator. This is called a Paternoster And it's extremely rare due to the danger it poses from never stopping. Old people or those with walking impediments could rarely use it
