I had just gotten a job with the Boeing Company and was on my first day sitting in a meeting and remember this lady come in screaming "the space shuttle just blew up'. I retired from there four years ago after 34 years working there.
You can really see the difference in the reaction in this video and those at the launch site. People there immediately knew when it exploded that it was over as they could see the explosion, while people further away assumed it was just the booster coming off.
