The Ultimate 110 has proven to be exceptionally reliable with the milder cam from the 100. Night & Day better than the Absolute Junk Crate Engine sold by the former S&S.
just picked up a free bike, 00 titan with the 127 ultima and ultima 5 spd tranny...guess itll be worth getting it running I'd say...thanks for your video and personal experience...keep it up brother
What I was told by the builder at R&R is that they are good engines and if you want them to last….when they are new pull the cam and lifters and put good ones in them.
This whole DX series is awesome man! Really hard to find videos of people actually taking the DX forks apart, so this is super helpful. Was going to send mine out to have them rebuilt, but after watching this I will definitely do it myself. Cheers!
I would like to see a good review of the Ultima shovelhead, I've seen quite a few on their evolution and twin cam but little to nothing on the 98 shovelhead. I'm seriously considering getting one for my 78 flh.
I realize that this is a older post, but I have been wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Ultima shovelhead 96 cu/in engine, I'm considering one for my 78 flh shovelhead bobber.
In my unfortunate pre Sturgis experience (2023) 1 week to go, I am forced to use my shitty HFT tire machine on my motorcycle tire, as the shop i normally go to has closed permanently, he retired, and its at the half way point from south Texas to Sturgis. I have found it works considerably better if you mount it to a pallet. I normally use it for trailer tires, mini bikes, and such small tires. I used it once on my Harley 10 years ago. Now i must do it again. Going to mod it out for next tire.
Welding the race for that application will make it tighter on the stem, thats a great method for neck bearing races. When it cools it pulls and shrinks the race and they almost fall out on their own.
Performance EVO engines eat up lifters, this isn't unique to Ultima. They've got wonky valve angles, you keep the oiling system up to spec and not let it get out of hand they hold together fine.
S&S engines take a dump too. Bang for buck, juice is worth the squeeze. I’m going to try their 124. I spent more piecing together my 95” on my 2002 FHLT only to get a 100/100. Top shelf components but only 5g’s for a complete crate, I’m willing to taste the beef. Nicely done with the breakdown, consensus normal mileage for failure, considering you beat the snot out of her as well.
I've bought these 'unassembled' before, other that some mild machining issues , it looked like they were running their tooling longer than necessary ,but parts quality was never a problem.
I have the 127 in my Softail. Upgraded 🔋 battery all balls starter gear reduction set on clutch hub along with Rivera pro clutch! Great running motor and pulls like a freight train! Nothing but smiles and miles! I’ll keep the whole lifter thing in mind when I approach the 15k miles on the clock. Btw great content!
Is the crank ridin on Timken bearings in these things? - I have one but never needed to tear it down. Some of the new ones are advertised as having Timken mains but I don't really know about the older ones.
I bought a 127 Ultima Elbruto quite a few years ago, it ran fantastic for 600ks and I started to get lifter noise, I limped it home about 20ks and she was rattling. Pulled the cam cover off and one of the lifters was totally destroyed, these were Jim's lifters, had the rebuilt on warranty but it cost me as they only covered parts. It got new cases, oil pump, pistons, rings, just about the whole motor., so now I would never buy Jim's anything again. From the factory it came with Jims cam followers and oil pump you would think your pretty safe, but no.
I do miss my 02 FXDX that being said I love my CVO Electra Glide but it would have been nice to have them both I just got my Dyna about perfect when I got the chance to get theCVO for about what I paid for my Dyna sadly at the time I couldn’t afford both but I am happy with the bagger.
I have the Ultima 127 I had an issue with it back in 05 when it had there Ross piston and the rear piston melted but I was doing 135 mph , but Ultima did the machine work and sent Keith black pistons to me and it’s ran fine since 👍🏻
Great video and a great band I'm glad you found the problem and it can be fixed. I honestly believe that back in the day more than say 10 years ago when Revtech was practically giving motors away that they created a lot of bad feelings in the industry of the V-Twin. The revtech motors had plenty of good and bad, and I think it's very possible that Ultima was always scrutinized because of it. They've put a lot of research and design and some fairly decent assembly and parts specifications in the Ultima motors. In my opinion they are the best option if you don't want to get into the S&S price point.
I hear about more problems. From s&s engines and components, than I do about ultima stuff. Most of what I hear about ultima is people complaining that ultima is all Asian made.
A job so easy that you made so hard. Holly cow!!! Been using one of those for 30 years and still worked great today. And if you just bolted it to the concrete would’ve made things so easy.
What about this made you think it was hard lol, the video is literally under 11 minutes with commentary and all the other stuff. I’m not spending the time or effort to bolt a $0.10 tool permanently to my floor dude.
This is a FANTASTIC video, well placed humor and ad-libs really make it a good and informational time! I'me ReBuilding a set of fxdx forks on my 02. I wanted to ask what rebuild kit you would recommend? im replacing the drain washers for sure, most rebuild kits have different bolts and a not the banjo that i just pulled out of mine. im also noticing parts that regular dyna forks use that the fxdx dont. great content, ive been posting the link to your channel on fb and ig groups as well. thank you much and looking forward to your build!
