What was scandalous was that it is so poorly painted compared to other nudes by Manet's contemporaries (Bouguereau, Cabanal, Leighton, Waterhouse … etc).
Somehow, I get the sense that the viewer did something nice for this young lady perhaps gave her advice or helped her in someway. She looks back in appreciation, as she moves on. Reminds us to help others.
I disagree with the matter of the background. It is not really all dark and plain, or empty, If one looks carefully one can see the form of a chair at the back and down the right of the figure.
Vermeer was a faker....he could not draw, needed to use a camera obscura and other tools to create this "masterpiece". If you use the paint correctly it does not crack. His painting does.Even that Vermeer did not do correct .It should not be in a Museum. Art hanging in a Museum should be done FREEHAND. Real Eyes Realize Real Lies
Watch 'Tim's Vermeer', the story of one man's very long quest to establish a possible technique that Vermeer may have used to paint his paintings, using the Camera Obscura and a comparator-mirror. Fascinating to see the results.

I think we are talking about a particular community, although her work challenges and lays bare the sexual image of women, the playboy/bunny.(the male gaze) .it fails to convey the positioning of women from differing communities...it would have been interesting if she had brought in this dimension to the work..

There's some controversy about that earring. On February 8th, of this year, The Art Newspaper website put up an article titled: The Girl with a Glass Bauble Earring? Why Vermeer's painting probably did not depict a real pearl. Also, I had no idea that the work used to be called “Girl with the Turban” and once sold for less than £1. 🙀
I saw this painting a couple of weeks ago in the Mauritshuis in Den Haag and it was mesmerizing. Absolute brilliance! Right now there is a big Vermeer exhibition in the Rijksmuseum where a record amount of Vermeers from all over the world have been gathered.
Thank you for your comment - it is incredible to see this beautiful painting up close. The Vermeer exhibition in Amsterdam is certainly a once in a lifetime experience! We can't wait to see it.
excellently succinct, immediately accessible presentation that beguiles the audience into a desire to findi out more. both the video... and the painting
"In a way he was a feminist" there is absolutely no way Lucian Freud can be called a feminist based on the way he treated women. The hatred for them in his paintings is palpable.
The significance of the relationship may be harmony, cooperation, conflict, tension… The woman seems to be glancing at the man, but the man is gazing straight at me….
